The Wii U controller becomes your last line of defense against the vicious pirate ghosts.

One of the tech demos Nintendo is showing for Wii U is Shield Pose. Designed to show off the gyroscope functionality of their new controller, Shield Pose tasks the player with blocking an onslaught of arrows, fired from ghost pirate ships that surround the player.

Before each barrage the captain of the spectral crew announces the direction each arrow is going to come from (Center, Right, Left, Above) and then his crew announce when they fire. The player has to raise the controller to face level and then move it to the proper position in time with the pirate attacks.  Once at eye level the action moves to the controller's screen, giving the player a view of the oncoming suction cup arrows as they strike the "shield." After each volley the player is prompted to move the controller "Down" to dislodge the arrows.

The game features sharp cell-shaded visuals and a distinct artistic style that while not easy to convey in words looks very much like a child's pop-up book.

While the gameplay is probably too simple to support a full title, Shield Pose would make a solid addition to a Wii Play or Wii Sports style mini-game collection. It is a fun demonstration of some of the Wii U's control functionality.
