Pilotwings Resort

After a 14-year hiatus, PilotWings returns in style.

A new PilotWings has been a long time coming. The last entry was PilotWings 64, which came out in 1996. Going with the 3DS trend of updating Nintendo 64 games with 3D graphics, we're lucky PilotWings 64 wasn't just ported.

Instead, we have PilotWings Resort, which is a happy marriage of PilotWings and Wii Sports Resort. The demo took place on Wuhu Island, the focal point of Wii Fit and Resort, and contained two modes: rocket belt and a sea plane.

The rocket belt is straight out of the previous game in the series, as you control a Mii character in a jet pack and control the direction and movement by moving your pack's angle and pressing a button. In the demo, you had to pop balloons within a time limit. It was easy to manipulate, and the 3D added greatly to the depth and usability of the game mode. When you fell, you'd bounce off the ground in a similar fashion to the 64 version of the game, which was humorous.

In the other section, you controlled a plane going through rings. It was fairly basic, but it showed off the island. The controls were a little tough to manage at times, as I'd often swing out to a side when I tried to turn, but overall the experience felt good.

The 3D effects didn't change the game, but they did add to it. Much like the other demos, it might not be necessary, but it is very engaging and brings you into the game more.

Did they say anything about using motion controls in this game? I know none of the games actually had them, but Nintendo did say that the 3DS would have gyroscopes and I'm curious how they plan to use them.
