Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars

If you're a fan of awesome, over-the-top 2D fighters, then Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is probably right up your alley.

I got a chance to play a preview build of the upcoming North American release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, which is due out on January 26. I've always been a casual fighting game fan, so I'm not steeped in the technical differences between the two games. Because of that and the fact that Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is an enhanced release of a game that we reviewed when it came out in Japan, I won't go into too much detail about the game. Instead, I'll focus on the new additions and differences.

Dead Rising's Frank West was the first character I tried. He's a bit slow moving, but he brings about a ridiculous Super Smash Bros.-like quality to the game. He'll whip out a baseball bat or a golf club at a moment's notice. His "Super" and "Hyper" attacks are very comical as they have him putting a Kobun head on an enemy and pummeling them, and putting on a Mega Man suit and blasting the opponent into oblivion.

I fooled around with a few other characters, including another new character, Zero, who seems to play like Mega Man but with a sword. The roster is interesting overall, and the zany, over-the-top gameplay strikes me as a cross between a standard Capcom fighter and Super Smash Bros.

The backgrounds seemed to be primarily from Tatsunoko properties I'm not familiar with, but I did get to play in an Okami-inspired level. There was a contrast between the Okami art style and the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom one, but it looked nice and worked well.

The PR representative who showed me the game hinted that there might be more characters than who was playable in the build, and everyone who had been previously announced was playable.

Fans of the Vs. series will no doubt appreciate the depth that is in the game, as there are a lot of technical aspects that go over my head, but at the same time, this is an accessible fighting game. It should appeal to both longtime Capcom fighting fans, and lapsed ones at the same time.

EXCITEMENT. Morrigan is in the game. That's all the convincing I need.
