San Jose, Ca., (July 13, 2004) – Leading video games developer and publisher Namco Hometek Inc. announced today that its popular role-playing game, Tales of Symphonia, has shipped to North American retail outlets. Developed by Namco Tales Studio Ltd. in Japan, Tales of Symphonia is now poised to send players on an epic quest exclusively for Nintendo GameCube.

“The wait is finally over--Tales of Symphonia is here,” said Rod Nakamoto, executive vice president of research and development at Namco Hometek Inc. “Tales of Symphonia clearly establishes a new standard for the role-playing genre of games, and we are certain fans of previous Tales iterations will be delighted with this next journey.”

Talkback

It seems like this date has creeped up on me, but this day or two of waiting of my copy is going to be torture... ;___;

SylJuly 13, 2004

I have to wait to get my copy, so everyone who can pick it up tommorow is lucky.... Of course, I can't complain because of the means that I'm acquiring it. ^_^

I suppose i'll be playing Majora's Mask till then.

KDR_11kJuly 13, 2004

So... Import it now or wait half a year until it comes out here? Descisions, descisions...

Bill AurionJuly 13, 2004

I demand you import!

*waves arms around wildly*

First time I'm not picking up a big name title right when it ships. I'm sure the ToS faithful won't be disappointed; probably won't be seeing them for a while...face-icon-small-wink.gif

I wonder if it's smart to order an import game weeks before you go on vacation...

Myxtika1 AznJuly 14, 2004

When I went to pick up my copy of the game yesterday at Gamestop, I saw a video of Tales of Symphonia on one of their televisions. In the lower left corner of the screen, I saw the Playstation logo. Isn't this game supposed to be Gamecube exclusive??

Bill AurionJuly 15, 2004

In the U.S. it is...

KDR_11kJuly 15, 2004

In Japan it's getting an enhanced port (SCEI demands all late PS2 ports to have additional features, that's also why VJ PS2 got Dante), but not outside of Japan.

Ian SaneJuly 15, 2004

"SCEI demands all late PS2 ports to have additional features, that's also why VJ PS2 got Dante"

Maybe Nintendo should do that. Hell just demanding that features be matched would improve most multiplatform games.

Seriously though Sony totally has it made regarding Japanese third party support. If they get a temporary exclusive it's a killer app because the people who really want it don't want to wait until it gets ported. If they get a later port it's a killer app because it has extra features to convince people to wait for the PS2 version. The only way for Nintendo to combat that sort of air tight scenario is to pull a Soul Calibur II and make deals with third parties where Nintendo properties are included as extras thus preventing the exact same feature from being ported to the PS2. No wonder Soul Calibur II sold best on the Cube. Nintendo's dedication to collaborating with third parties suddenly makes so much sense. That's the only way to prevent a PS2 port.

KDR_11kJuly 15, 2004

Nintendo doesn't have the monopoly. Sony can tell third parties to go f### themselves and the third parties will still come back because they want a piece of the PS2 pie, if Nintendo did that they'd forever lose that third party. Nintendo demanding enhanced ports would just result in less ports being made. I think this will bite Sony in the ass next gen, or at least I hope so.

Ian SaneJuly 15, 2004

"I think this will bite Sony in the ass next gen, or at least I hope so."

I hope so too. Preventing cel-shaded and 2D games from being localized in North America should piss a few third parties off as well. Nintendo used to censor content but they never to my knowledge prevented a release outright because of graphics.

Nintendo rejects GBA gameswith bad gameplay. While the managers hate that, the developers actually agree with them.

Ian SaneJuly 16, 2004

"Nintendo rejects GBA games with bad gameplay."

F*ck they must be REALLY slack to allow some of those GBA games that have been released to come out. The GBA version of Defender is like attempted murder in a box. I shudder to think what the titles they didn't allow to get released were like.
