E3Expo 2006

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 2006--Nintendo and Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE:FSL) (NYSE:FSL.B) have collaborated to provide reliable, flexible and cost-efficient development tools for the new Wii console.

Nintendo has entrusted Freescale and its new CodeWarrior® Radix™ Studio as the official toolset for the Wii console. Nintendo is now shipping development kits bundled with the CodeWarrior technology to help developers speed the creation of compelling content for its new platform.

"Freescale's CodeWarrior technology has earned a worldwide reputation for offering high-quality development tools," said Genyo Takeda, senior managing director and general manager, Integrated Research & Development Division for Nintendo Co., Ltd. "The tools selected for Wii are no exception, and will allow game developers to create exciting titles that take advantage of the unique features found in our new platform."

The CodeWarrior tools for the Wii console are powered by Freescale's Radix technology. Introduced at the 2006 Game Developers Conference in March, Radix is a lightweight C++ framework with flexible, modular architecture designed for maximum extensibility. The framework offers:

-- Editing, debugging and code browsing capabilities

-- An XML-based project system

-- A scriptable workflow that allows studios to quickly and easily integrate pre-existing workflow applications

-- An advanced user interface that runs natively on Windows

-- Multi-monitor support

-- Hot-swappable plug-ins

The toolkit also ships with a stable, high-performance PowerPC® compiler.

"Wii is an innovative platform that will push gameplay into new realms," said Roger Edgar, manager, Game Technology Organization for Freescale Semiconductor. "CodeWarrior Radix Studio for the Wii console is a highly extensible development platform that helps developers fully leverage the innovation of Nintendo's newest console."

Wii, Nintendo's upcoming console, will feature a controller designed to be used with either one hand or two -- a first in the video game industry. Users can manipulate action on their television screens through the precise, life-like motion of the innovative Wii Remote controller.

thats sounds good. Quick question though, how much does a Wii Dev Kit cost? And is it anything like developing a game using the Unreal Engine Editor? I would love to know because if it isn't terribly complicated i would love to A. gather some game students and get one, or B. Get my school to get one (B. being very unlikely, we currently only have like 4 licenses of ZBrush)

And is it anything like developing a game using the Unreal Engine Editor?

If you license the Unreal Engine, yes. Otherwise it's just like developing any other piece of software.
