At the end of a very long first day, the E3 away team gathered at TYP's home to discuss the biggest games from Nintendo. As much as we were frustrated by Nintendo Direct early that morning, playing the games themselves is naturally a more satisfying and exciting experience. We did observe some pitfalls, though, and there are some overall evaluations of the lineup as well. Nevertheless, if you're lacking for positive perspectives on Nintendo at this year's show, our comments on Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, etc. will surely help.

Following that roundtable of impressions, we've got a brief interview from the floor with Jack Mathews of Armature Studios. They are bringing the Arkham series to 3DS, complete with non-linear, exploration-based, ability-gated gameplay and the hard-hitting combat that recent Batman games have made famous. In short, it's a 2.5D Metroid-style Batman game on Nintendo's handheld, created by some of the top minds behind the Metroid Prime series. Keep an eye on this game!

Off and on I've been feeling kind of "meh" towards Super Mario 3D World, but then I watch that trailer again and find it so joyful and fun looking.

I can understand Jonny's overall lack of enthusiasm for the games presented at Nintendo's E3 Direct. It's not that the games shown weren't fun or aren't gonna do well (critically at least). It's the lack of anything truly new or completely different that has left a kind of pall over an otherwise great E3 presentation.

Also to Jonny's point about there being nothing that wowed him graphically about the new HD Nintendo games shown; I think it's more of a testament to Nintendo's art style than a lack of graphical bells and whistles that the games don't look dramatically different than their most recent predecessors. A lot of popular Nintendo franchises & games (Wind waker , Galaxy 1+2, NSMB series, Prime, pikmin, etc) have such a distinct art style that kinda holds up remarkably across generations.  Because we knew we were getting sequels to Nintendo franchises, I didn't expect the art styles to change which only leaves the graphical improvements to occur in resolution, shaders, textures, etc. which we also got.  The only way you are gonna get "next gen graphics excited" from a Nintendo product is if it's either an ip that hasn't seen use in over a decade or a brand new one.  Which circles us back to there being nothing "new" to excite Nintendo fans at this E3 despite there being plenty of great games that will make us happy in the near future.

I have to disagree with Johnny about the way DKC:TF looks. Its much better than DKCR for the Wii and hell I can see this just from the vdeos. I'm sure actually playing the game in person, the game will look even better.

I can't remember what Johnny wanted from Retro, it was either something new or another Metroid game, which I'm sure as hell happy that it wasn't another Metroid. All tastes aside, Metroid doesn't have near the selling power of the DKC games. Heck, DKCR sold more than all three Prime games worldwide. He's only talking the game down cause he didn't get what he wanted. I'm sure at some point during the Wii U's life that there will be a Metroid game developed. At this point though, Nintendo is going to develop what sells the most, not what makes a niche group happy. Just like I was very bummed by Super Mario 3D World, I wanted a really cool, new looking 3d Mario game, not a game in the same vein as Super Mario 3d Land. Unfortunately, 3d Mario games don't sell as well as te 2d games, so I guess Nintendo went with this type of Mario game. Hell, they probably would have went with another 2d Mario game, except they did that at launch for the Wii U. Though, unless Nintendo can sell more Wii U consoles, none of their games are going to sell as well compared to the way games sold on the Wii.
