Welcome to this week's episode of NWR Connectivity! We're still working things out format-wise, and this week we've got three segments, plus one bonus segment for you to enjoy.

First up, Andy, Mike, and Zach briefly go over some news and then dive into the listener mailbag.

Our second segment has Neal, Andy, and Zach talking about the recently re-released Mega Man: Dr Wily's Revenge for Game Boy.

After that, Neal and Zach will continue on and talk about their time spent playing Tetris: Axis and The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition.

Following the "end" of the show, feel free to stick around and listen to some of us babble on about everybody's favorite English export, Dr. Who.

We love listener mail, so if you have any questions (or comments) for us, send 'em here. Thanks, and enjoy!

I’m sure you guys have already figured this out; but from what I’ve heard and seen, in order to recalibrate the Wiimote for Skyward Sword, your point the remote at the center of the screen and press “down” on the D-pad. It only takes a second and shouldn’t interfere with the flow of the gameplay.

I really don't like the new Dr. Who.  The old DRs were this weird old crank.  Now its this young charming toll just doesn't do it for me.

Anyways like the show's new format but it could use with some more of the Newscast's "chaotic" nature.  Maybe everyone should get drunk before recording?  :P:

CericOctober 10, 2011

I'm still waiting for my good 3 episode Arc for the new series.  No bleeding out.  The story start to finish 3 episodes like in some of the older ones.

That does get me to asking what you guys think of the short segments on specific games. We have more coming this week, too (were supposed to be in this episode, but technical issues pushed them back). I'm heading those up, and I'm wondering how you guys feel about them. What you like, what you don't like, etc.

As for the chaotic nature, I think it won't die. I think things like Jeopardy and the Newscast crew intro will keep it alive.

CericOctober 10, 2011

I'm still waiting on the Newscast Zelda Smack Down with SFX.

Ironically, I think the shorter game sections are more News oriented then the original Newscast.  Though I do miss having a straight man in them.

I miss Nate. :-P

RE: Doctor Who. I'm surprised you didn't mention it but even though it was cheesily set-up, but the question now means the very existence of the series is linked to its title. Answer the question and the show pretty much is over.

Plus, by the end of the finale it ultimately allows almost a show-wide reboot in the same way how Fringe had at the end of season 3; potential to go ANYWHERE with it afterward, meaning it could go in a widely different angle in season 7.

Really loved the Doctor Who talk.

oksodaScott Thompson, Associate EditorOctober 11, 2011

Thanks for all the positive Doctor Who feedback. We had a blast talking about it. I'm positive we'll do another after the Christmas special.

And Plugagubz, I think you are right about series 7 being different than the past seasons. The very fact that he is going to go back "in the shadows," as he says, will fundamentally change the show. I mean, to this point, the Doctor has been rather outgoing and not exactly shy about revealing who he is. It'll be interesting to see him hide his identity a bit. Color me excited.

Who wants to take bets on the next funny piece of clothing the Doctor will wear and then remark "I wear X's now. X's are cool"? My guess is swimming goggles.

If I wrote the special, I have him cycle through all of the old doctors clothes minus Tennants making comments.  The last being Tom Bakers with him seeming unconvinced that they aren't super stealthy.

Some Phrases I use:

Jon Pertwee Clothes:  "I suddenly feel the need to find a car."
Patrick Troughton Clothes: "There is a recorder in here somewhere."
William Hartnell: "These clothes are just Rubbish, My Girl."
Christopher Eccleston: Angst
Paul McGann: "I should go on Radio."

I figure he keep the hat he recently acquired and maybe get some spurs.  Which he will argue with the TARDIS over.

I like the short segments on specific games.  Given that the participants vary so much, it's more likely that someone could appear that would champion a particular game if no one else is familiar with it.  Since we're still very early in the 3DS's life, hopefully there will be a number of gaming discussions to mine for segments like these.

Regarding Dr. Who...since I'm a novice, let me ask:  If I were to start watching the modern series, would you recommend starting with the arc with Christopher Eccleston or one of the more recent seasons?  I've at least read about the series enough to know that the Doctor periodically regenerates when he's experienced significant bodily damage.  I tried watching two of the Eccleston episodes a few weeks ago, and I had a hard time getting into them.  I'm willing to keep giving it a try a time permits.

If you want my honest opinion.  Skip to Tennant.  Eccleston I didn't enjoy that much.  Tennant is more like a traditional Doctor.  Same for Matt Smith.  Start at a Christmas special then the season behind it would be my recommendation.

There's only 13 Ecclestone episodes, so you may as well watch them all. Start from season 1 and go forward.

Honestly, skip both and start with Series 5. It's very new-viewer friendly. It's the most palatable Who in years - if you end up liking it, you can always go backwards and catch up on the stuff you missed.

oksodaScott Thompson, Associate EditorOctober 12, 2011

Really, Karl? Hmm, I dont know about that.

I would say do your best with the Eccleston episodes. I agree that they start of slow, but like I said in the podcast, once it gets near the middle and you get episodes like The Empty Child or even Father's Day, it really starts to go. His episodes help pave the way for the Tennant years, and I think they are worth seeing.

Starting with Matt Smith and season 5 isn't bad, but there are so many great stories to be had with the Tennant seasons. And though it doesn't happen too often, there are some references in the Matt Smith episodes to Tennant episodes. Besides, can you imagine watching season 5 without having seen Blink or Forest of the Dead? Those are essential, particularly the latter.

Sundoulos, I say tough it out with the Eccleston season. It really gets better as it goes along, and once David Tennant comes along, you'll be hooked. Trust me.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorOctober 12, 2011

I agree that there's plenty to like about Series 1-4. However, the Matt Smith episodes are just a lot more friendly to people who don't know anything about Who. I'll put it this way.

Everyone who likes Series 1-4 will probably like Series 5+.

Not everyone who likes Series 5+ will like Series 1-4.

So to get an accurate representation of what Who is really like these days, I think it's best to start with Series 5 and then, if you're really interested, work your way backwards.

CericOctober 12, 2011

Or you could do the really wonky way.

Watch the Sarah Jane Chronicles.
Watch Torchwood.

Then if you think you would like something in the middle watch Dr. Who.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorOctober 12, 2011

By "something in the middle" I assume you mean "something that isn't awful?"

No disrespect to Sarah Jane, though. It's supposed to be a kids show. Torchwood just oozes with meh.

CericOctober 12, 2011

They both have there moments but, yeah aren't really that spectacular on there own as more than extended lore.

The first two seasons had their moments. Children of Earth I really enjoyed. Miracle Day was a mediocre episode spread out to ten episodes with a bad ending episode.

CericOctober 12, 2011

Miracle day could have gone the whole time and I would have been fine with it if they had a few episodes sprinkled throughout that was other world threats or something different to break it up a bit.

SundoulosOctober 24, 2011

Hey, everyone, just wanted to give a belated thanks for the Dr. Who input.  I did decide to keep plugging with the Christopher Eccleston run, and there have been a few I've really liked.  I look forward to the start of the next season.  Maybe the next time you guys have a Dr. Who-related segment, I'll actually know what you're talking about. :)

I think season 5 was OK, but David Tennant was a much better Doctor and overall seasons 2-4 are best (season 1 is pretty bad, only a couple of good episodes). I am not able to easily watch the new episodes though since I don't get BBC America and PBS is pretty slow is getting them.

I didn't know PBS was airing them.

TJ SpykeNovember 03, 2011

They air them Saturdays at 11PM. I haven't watched in awhile though. They have started with season 5 though.
