wow. you guys are really churning them out. i'm not complaining.

I'm honored by the episode title.

...Don't call me "Tip"

I thought of the episode title before even realizing that you can pronounce it to sound close to the real thing.

I'd like to apologize for speaking so fast. You'd think I'd have learned to slow down by now, but I get so gosh darn excited when I'm on RFN!

As someone who has been cursed with very quick speech his entire life, you, sir, are forgiven.

Just thought I'd comment on the Mario Power Tennis charging aspect.

Listening to you guys made me realize I should have talked about this more in my review.

Greg is partially correct. It auto charges if you stop moving. It doesn't do it whenever yous top moving though. It only does it if you are in the path of an oncoming ball.

This was a little weird at first, but I think the reason why it didn't make it into the review is because I got used to it.  Personally, i think the auto charging is a good way to give the player feedback for if they are in the path of the ball.

There's one interesting part regarding forehands and backhands and this too.  Your player will start auto charging whatever shot it thinks make sense.  Obviously if its charging a back hand and you perform a back hand it will hit a nice hard shot...

However, if it is charging a backhand and you swing a forehand, your character will immediately jump to the other side and do a forehand... the result is still a return, but instead of a nice charged one, it's usually some sore of loop shot that will get spiked back in your face.

So yeah, forehand backhand selection is a level of depth that wasn't in the Cube game.

Also, Super Mario Kart is the best Mario Kart by FAR.

You are all crazy for thinking otherwise.

You say "you are all crazy", but Jonny was the only person to actually express the opinion that SMK is not one of the better MK games -
I have never played SMK because I was put off buying the game as a kid by the fact that it runs in split-screen even in single player, TYP is definitely a SMK fan, and Jon didn't express an opinion either way.

I agree with Johnny - I can't stand playing the Mode 7 SMK games for more than a few minutes at a time.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorMarch 23, 2009

Maybe Jonny is just too loud then. :)

I kid, I kid.

No doubt, I talk the most and am easily the most aggressive speaker on the show.  Still waiting for the other guys to compensate and catch up with me.  This is a major problem when we bring guests on the show -- most of them aren't used to engaging in such energetic conversation, especially over Skype and with people they don't know extremely well.  I try to prepare our guests by telling them that they should talk A LOT and WITH GUSTO, but it's difficult for most people to do that without practice.  The regulars have plenty of practice, and we tend to drown out any guest who is even the slightest bit timid.  It's only because we have developed these habits and skills out of necessity.

Pale, are you sure it's Super Mario Kart itself that's so great, or could your idealized memories of the game be the reason which you hold it in such high regard?

I always pronounced it "type". Do you prefer "T-Y-P"?

Eternal Darkness 2 will never be on a non-Nintendo system. I just checked the USPTO site and Nintendo owns the trademark. I also heard they own the patent for the insanity system. So a sequel can only happen on a Nintendo system (unless it's just a spiritual sequel, like how BioShock is a spiritual sequel to System Shock due to Electronic Arts owning System Shock).

King of TwitchMarch 23, 2009

yes it is mop, it's the only one that doesn't rely on rubber necking AI, giant shells of death, item boxes around every curve, or other such gimmicks unlike the other no-hoppers.

Mop it upMarch 23, 2009

It's also flat, bland, boring, monotonous, and has some of the worst controls I've ever experienced in any videogame.

To each their own I guess. To be fair, Mario Kart Wii is the only game in the series which I actually like, in part due to them finally getting the controls right.

StratosMarch 23, 2009

I'm listening to the cast right now and I just gotta ask this real fast because it's bugging me: why are you celling the temple girl Maya? Her name is Ellia.

SMK had cheap AI as well such as rubberbanding and I watched one enemy driver pass through one of those electric thwomps on Rainbow Road that cost me the gold on 150cc.

I think the N64 one had the best balance of items and gameplay tricks. That version's blue shell sailed on the ground, could be blocked and was an uncommon occurrence.

PONG EXTREME ..........I didn't give that game a second thought but now I am curious.

I listened to this at work.  I took notes...angry notes. I have eleven points I want to reference.

I expect the same "correction" time that we awarded Jonny after one of his absences.

Also, you people need to pony up and pick a real mans' game.  Super Ghouls and Ghosts puts hair on your chest!

Haha, now I'm really looking forward to 139.

BTW I bought Bit.Trip Beat on your recommendation, Jonny, and I love it.  This game is a real trip.  Pun intended.

Mario Kart DS would be my favorite Mario Kart if the battle mode was online since I never really knew anyone with a DS to play it with. As is Mario Kart 64 is my favorite BECAUSE of the battle mode, and it honestly confounds me where all this "MK64 doesn't have a good battle mode" has came from because I recall it being considered good at the time. Heck everyone I knew loved it (especially block fort and the triple level world), it had quite a bit of strategy not to mention stalking people as the bob-bomb was one of my favorite moments in ANY multiplayer game, it was also satisfying to run a bob-bomb player over with a star. Great times for everyone, besides Goldeneye and the WWF games Mario Kart 64 was one of my favorite multiplayer games EVER but like I said that was for the battle mode (though racing was great as well).

SMK and Super Circuit gave me headaches and I wasn't even thrilled with SMK when it was the hot new game either. It wasn't until 3D where you actually had elevation where I started enjoying any racer.

Also I was sad to see Jungle Speed ignored AGAIN when it came to recommendations, if you want an addicting card game with high production values (at least for Wiiware) this is the game you MUST get. Though for some reason its underhyped nature is far more then even Groovin Blocks (which is a fun game in its own right). It is fast and frantic yet anyone can play it.

StratosMarch 25, 2009

I think now that there is a storage solution in place people might be more open to D/Ling new things on the service since space isn't an issue. I know BitTripBeat and Groovin Blocks fit into that category for me. I might try Jungle Speed out at some point too when I have someone who would play it with me.

Yeah Jungole Speed is for more then one person, you can have AI opponents but it just isn't the same. In case people don't understand what Jungle Speed is, it is a card game where you each start with a stack of cards, you keep flipping your cards until you see your card matches someone else, if it does you have to grab the idol in the center of the board (It works extremely well with Wii you basically hold B and jerk the Wiimote forward). The one who doesn't get the idol in time gets the other player's cards, and you play until one person flips over all of their cards (BTW these symbols can look REALLY similar so you have to be careful). You also get cards that change the rules like everyone must grab for the idol at once, or it may swtch things up like making the card flipping go counterclockwise instead of clockwise. It also has a more casual mode and a more complex mode where the symbols look even more similar along with some wacky special cards.

Oh yeah you can also try to fake someone out and do a pretend grab if you just whip your Wiimote forward without holding the button, though your character may be clumsy and knock it over. So all in all, GREAT GAME, that must be tried if you like multiplayer experiences.

i really enjoyed and laughed you guys sang my 'song' .

You're welcome.  Never say that I won't make a damn fool out of myself for you people.

If you'll notice, I usually talk less near the end of the podcast.  I only have so much energy to devote to talking over Jonny, so by the end I'm pretty drained.  ;-)

Hearing Lindy again in all his "PS3 is the GREATEST" glory made me smile

Thanks, RFN gang, for reading my Metroid e-mail despite its length. I think y'all handled that well, and I appreciate that you covered it all without reading every word. However, I'm sad to see the lack of response to the topic in this Talkback forum - which just about matches the response to my original posts about it elsewhere in these forums. I guess there's just not much discussion-spurring enthusiasm in "Mirror's Edge + Metroid = fun?". Ah well.

Bippin' and the boppin', indeed!
