Talkback

Good show as usual guys, and I think you're getting into the groove of it.

Re: Mega Man passwords - I wish the Wily passwords would let you go back to the stage you left off at, but every Mega Man password I ever had stuck me back at the beginning of the castle. You could rig it so you had a bunch of E-Tanks but it was always the first stage of the castle.

The reason the robot master numbers go up to 80 is because Mega Man is #1 and Roll #2 (Proto Man is #0). Light and Wily worked together before Wily went for world domination, taking 6 of the 8 robots they had in the lab with him (Proto Man ran away I think).

Bass already combined with Treble in MM7 in one of his later boss forms. Mega Man had the rush adapter (but only one version of it) in that game too.

Oh yeah, Mega Man and Roll.

Damnit, I was all excited.

I toned down the chapter breaks this week, but I still used one for every new topic.  Hopefully this was a bit better for people.

LAWYER'D!

Yeah, I knew you guys had to be mistaken on the robot counting. For one thing, you were multiplying 9 x the number of games, when most of them only have eight bosses (with Mega Man's face in the middle). Rockman + Roll + 6 (MM1) + 8 * (MM2-10) = 80. Proto Man is No. 000, of course. At this rate, I wonder if they'll ever make it to triple digits?

Read my lips, MORE CHAPTER BREAKS! But seriously, I really appreciate the time that goes into editing all that stuff. I get all giddy for the screen shots that pop up on my iPhone with each topic.

Just listened to the podcast.  Just out of curiosity, has anyone here ever tried the Rockman 7 demake  that someone released for the PC?  It's actually pretty good.

I mentioned this in the game club thread, but after beating Mega Man 10 on normal mode, I decided to try Mega Man 9.  Thus far, I think that many of the stages in 9 are a bit more memorable, but they're clearly designed to cause cheap deaths (spike placement!) until the player just gets over the learning curve.  Between the two, so far, I think I prefer the stages, bosses, weapons and music of 9, but the DLC content that 10 offers (extra stages, bosses, and weapons) will probably rebalance the scales in favor of 10.

I still think that a lot of the weapons in 10 were kind of difficult to use properly, but I do appreciate that they did try to make players think about strategy when they use the weapon (e.g. the Commando Man and Chill Man weapons.

I also want Mega Man to get his power slide back, though I think it would make a lot of the boss encounters easier.  I could take or leave the charge shot on the Mega Buster.

By the way, was Game Club supposed to include comments from the forum thread? I kept waiting to hear a few, but no dice. The Newscast crew did a good job discussing it, but it just seemed odd.

Yes, it absolutely was, and I didn't realize we forgot until I was in the editing process.  We even had them in our show notes.

Nice job with the stinger; they don't get much better than that.

I was confused for a moment there but 9 is the number of games that have 8 bosses, he added the 6 from MM1 separately.

I find it interesting that you folks say Mega Man 2 is the best game in the series. I'm actually starting to wonder if the game is overrated. The stage design has potential, but there are an awful lot of respawning enemies which bring it down. The weapons are pretty imbalanced, most of them are pointless due to the awesomity of the Metal Blade. The robot weaknesses are kind of messed up, a lot of them take damage from three or four different weapons. Plus, four of the robots are also weak to the Mega Buster, instead of just one or two like the other games. To be fair, when creating this game, Capcom was coming off the first Mega Man with which they received complaints that it was too difficult. At this point they were still trying to find a good balance of difficulty.

The reason, I think, that Mega Man 2 is so highly regarded, is because it was the first or second Mega Man game that a lot of us played. It was also quite an improvement over the first game, and offered more new features than any game after it (energy tanks, 8 bosses, passwords, help items, Dr. Wily castle intro, etc.). The main thing which makes it memorable would have to be the music. This game was released at a time when music in videogames was treated as an afterthought, its existence was merely to create sound just so games weren't silent. The Mega Man games actually put focus on not only composing good music, but also creating a different music piece for each stage. Ask anyone about Mega Man 2 and I guarantee you the first thing they will mention is the music; it seems it is what leaves an impression on people above all other aspects.

For the record, Mega Man 2 is my favourite game in the series. From an objective standpoint however, I don't think it is the best game in the series, and certainly couldn't be argued as fact.

I'd like to offer a slight correction. You guys mention that previous Mega Man games had passwords for each stage of Dr. Wily's castle, but that isn't true. However, apparently, Mega Man 4, 5, and 6 all had two castles, and for these, there is a password for Dr. Wily's castle so you don't have to replay the first castle. There still isn't a password for each stage, though.

Also, the M-Tank is a Mystery Tank, not a Mega Tank. In Mega Man 5 when you use the Mystery Tank, it would turn all on-screen enemies into a 1-Up. I have not tested it out in MM10 to see if this is still the case.

What? All the enemies turn into 1-ups? I'll have to replay MM5. I owned that game, and I don't remember that ever happening. I don't even remember M-tanks being IN that game. I've definately got to jump back into the Anniversary Collection and refresh my memory.

I've used it in MM10, though, and it just refills all your health and weapon energy...as I remember it doing in previous MM games.

It still does that in MM5, but it also transforms regular enemies into 1-Ups. It might not work on all enemies, but I know I would use it in Stone Man's stage since there was one to be found there. I think there are only two M-Tanks to be found in the game and they are kind of hidden. You can also carry only one at a time; if you have one, then the others will not appear.
