As if you hadn’t played it enough the first two times, Pokémon Red & Blue/Green is getting a facelift for the GBA!

First released in Japan in February of 1996, Pokémon Red and Green (Blue overseas) was the Game Boy game that triggered a worldwide phenomenon. Dengeki Online has revealed that Nintendo and Game Freak are remaking the genre-defining twosome for the GBA in Pokémon Fire Red & Leaf Green. The sibling titles will feature updated graphics similar to those found in Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire and, most likely, enhanced audio as well.

The biggest feature in Fire Red & Leaf Green is its compatibility with the already released Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire as well as Pokémon Colosseum for the GameCube (coming out November 12th in Japan). This will let die-hard fans truly "collect them all" on one game cartridge and battle them anywhere!

Dengeki also reports the remakes will feature new surprises for seasoned Pokémasters, though the online Japanese magazine gives no further details. No release date has been announced for Pokémon Fire Red & Leaf Green and it is still unknown whether they will be released outside of Japan. Be sure to check out Dengeki Online’s article for the first official screenshot.

This would be the definition of the term "rip-off". I mean I thought Pokemon Red/Blue was an amazing game and under normal circumstances I think an updated remake would be a great idea. However Nintendo has been milking the franchise way too much and the release of Pokemon Yellow alone destroyed any enthusiasm for a future remake.

The idea of having to own two games to "catch them all" in the first place is pretty irritating and the practise of then releasing a third "special" edition has been something I've never tolerated. Ruby/Saphire was a great game but in a way it was a pretty big "f*ck you" to the fans. It had very little new ideas implemented, had LESS features than Gold/Silver, and didn't include every Pokemon. The attitude with that title was very much "this is the bare minimum we have to do to make people buy it". Now they're making us buy the same games we already own just to unlock Pokemon that SHOULD have been in Ruby/Saphire to begin with. Meanwhile Pokemon fans have been asking for a 3D Pokemon RPG for YEARS and we STILL aren't getting one and probably never will.

However I know fans will still buy this. My brother is a Pokemon nut and when he heard about this he had to admit that even though he felt it was a bit of a rip-off he would still buy it. I've never understood that about Pokemon fans. The Pokemon franchise is probably the most mishandled game franchise of all time. Nintendo NEVER listens to what the Pokemon fans want and basically treats them like a bunch of naive morons and they still run back to them every time. Nintendo would never be able to get away with this with any of their other franchises.

Can't say much more then that! I agree completely with it. Nintendo better have some HUGE surprises that the article talks about fo this game to sell very well. But like was said before, the sad thing is is that this will sell. Now that Nintendo has made a hefty profit with the franchise, take some of it and gamble on a 3D RPG!! I wonder how the RPG mode in collesium will work. It will probably be like you are able to use your GBA party and walk around in the wild and fight wild pokemon and possibly go talk to trainers and fight them to gain exp for your party. That was one complaint many had with N64, your uploaded pokemon never gained exp. This is probably Nintendo's way of getting your pokemon exp in 3D. A nice step towards an RPG, so hopefully one is in the works!

ill buy it and i have no worries about buying it, its the same with sport franchises really (except pokemon comes along less frequently) we now have an updated 'roster' and i need to collect me some football players! er... pokemon... *cough*

out of all the pokemon games, i have only owned red (and blue, but my sister gave that to me) silver and ruby, i never got yellow or had any interest in getting it (pikachu annoys me) so owning three games in 5 years isn't that bad is it ;P.

YES!!! I lost interest in any thing Pokemon after the first 151 of them. Now that it's going back to it's roots, I'll be sure to get it and I didn't get either Ruby or Sapphire.

My question is, you can't really collect them all still because there are G/S pokemon that aren't in the new games as well.....so why do they say that you can?

nitsu niflheimSeptember 16, 2003

Nintendo should remake these as 3D for the Gamecube, Nintendo obviously doens't understand that the GBA doesn't need anymore sales right now. The GCN does, and sorry but the Colosseum game really isn't the same thing and doesn't cut it. I will buy these if they come ot because I never played Pokemon before Ruby and Sapphire so It's new to me, and I want them, so there.

Maybe there waiting for the next-gen system with it's online plans and put all the effort into that, making an online Pokémon world where you could roam free and collect badges to take it into the league. Such person can only dream about it, would be cool though ^_^

I know that hundred and thousands of japanese people will wait in line at the release just to buy it. I know, it's crazy how much money Nintendo could make with an 3D online Pokégame.

"I know, it's crazy how much money Nintendo could make with an 3D online Pokégame."

I don't think it should be online.
Creating a non-online 3D Pokemon RPG would require much less effort from Nintendo and would almost certainly sell a lot better than an online version would. The online element would only be a draw for a small percentage of Pokemon fans while it would scare the majority away. Just look at how poorly the online Final Fantasy title sold in Japan compared to the previous, offline ones.
I think it's more likely that when we finally do get a 3D Pokemon RPG, it will be all about the GBA connectivity.

LMAO, Nintendo must be REALLY getting desperate if they are already porting old pokemon titles. face-icon-small-disgusted.gif
Maybe Nintendo is worried about the PSP.
