All of you who imported a Game Boy Player... your bet just paid off. Nintendo's online store now has US Region Boot Discs!

Update: We've now had a chance to try the US Boot Disc on a modded GameCube and a Japanese Game Boy Player, and we're pleased to announce that as expected, it works flawlessly.

Sometimes, the ways of Nintendo confuse us ... like the decision to release the Game Boy Player in the US in only Jet Black. This has caused the Player to be one of the hottest import items in a while, as the Player comes in four colors in Japan.

The only real "flaw" with the imported Player was the need for a region coded boot disc, which means if your GameCube didn't have a region mod (or Freeloader swap disc), you'd be out of luck. Even so, switching regions or swapping discs is a hassle, however slight.

Never you fear, because Nintendo has started offering the Game Boy Player Boot Disc as a replacement item in their online store. Simply choose "Parts, Accessories, and Manuals", then "Nintendo GameCube", then finally "Parts and Accessories" to find the replacement boot disc available for $15.00. With $5.00 shipping, your total will come to $20.00.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 2003--Today, Nintendo's portable Game Boy®, the most successful video game system in history, makes its homecoming on the television screen with Nintendo of America Inc.'s introduction of the Nintendo GameCube(TM) Game Boy® Player.

The accessory makes it possible to play more than 1,300 Game Boy games on your TV through the Nintendo GameCube(TM) console.

For a limited time, consumers can receive a free Game Boy Player when they purchase a Nintendo GameCube system (MSRP $149.99). Game Boy Player is available for an MSRP of $49.99 when sold separately. The Game Boy Player connects to the bottom of the Nintendo GameCube, matching the footprint of the system, and allows players to use either the console controller or Game Boy® Advance to direct on-screen action. Game Boy Player start-up disc, required for use, is included.

"For several years, the video game industry has been pushing forward to new technical frontiers, while at the same time celebrating classic hit games of the past," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. "The Game Boy Player fulfills both desires by instantly making your favorite Game Boy games playable on your television screen."

The Game Boy Player accommodates several novel forms of game play:

  • Traditional -- Insert Game Boy or Game Boy Advance game cartridges in the Game Boy Player and play via a regular Nintendo GameCube controller or WaveBird(TM) wireless controller

  • Connected -- Attach the Nintendo GameCube(TM) Game Boy® Advance cable (sold separately) to the Nintendo GameCube and the Game Boy Advance becomes the controller

  • Reader-friendly -- Connect the e-Reader(TM) accessory and slide specially-designed cards to unlock new games and experiences

  • Multi-player -- Link via Game Boy® Advance Game Link® cables to see the entire action on the TV screen, while other players view their own action on the screen of their linked Game Boy Advance systems

The ability to play all Game Boy games on the road and on a TV screen at home gives players even more reasons to own both Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance. All new and upcoming Game Boy Advance games are compatible with the new Game Boy Player, including: Donkey Kong Country(TM), Final Fantasy Tactics® Advance, Super Mario® Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3(TM), Advance Wars(TM) 2: Black Hole Rising and Pokemon® Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire.
