Lead Blockbuster Lineup

SAN FRANCISCO - (April 28, 2003) - illustrating its power as an independent

content publisher, SEGA today announced its fall and winter lineup of nearly 20 entertainment and sports games to be featured at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2003. SEGA's E3 2003 lineup features a bold and diverse array of titles for the PlayStation2 computer entertainment

system, the Xbox video game system from Microsoft, Nintendo GameCube and

the Game Boy Advance.

The SEGA entertainment lineup features a thrilling blend of action, adventure and platform games, including the historic multi-platform debut of Sonic The Hedgehog in "Sonic Heroes," the return of several classic SEGA franchises such as "Altered Beast" and "Vectorman," and the first new platform game and character from Sonic's legendary creator, Yuji Naka, since the SEGA Saturn era - "Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg."

SEGA's 2K4 sports series is back with an all-new look and feel ready to compete for top honors. Packed with gameplay and visual enhancements, the 2K4 series has been completely redesigned including a new interface and enhanced integration with ESPN, The Worldwide Leader in Sports. SEGA's

2K4 lineup includes new gameplay mechanics and revolutionary features that will continue to raise the bar for traditional sports video games by delivering an unprecedented level of immersive gameplay further blurring the boundaries between realism and entertainment.

"With an impressive lineup of world-class entertainment and sports titles, SEGA's E3 2003 showing is testament to our legendary properties and franchises and the strength of our world-renowned development talent,"

said Tetsu Kayama, president and CEO, SEGA of America, Inc. "With an enormous catalog of iconic character-driven franchises and a completely redesigned 2K4 sports series, SEGA is committed to delivering industry leading content across all platforms in 2003 and beyond."

SEGA's lineup of entertainment games to be featured at E3 includes but is not limited to:

· "Sonic Heroes" (PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Xbox): SEGA's legendary mascot Sonic The Hedgehog makes his historic PlayStation 2 and Xbox debut! In "Sonic Heroes," Sonic embarks on his biggest adventure ever, with his trademark blazing speed and a new gameplay twist. Sonic and

his friends have evolved, adopting a configuration feature that allows gamers to

control three playable characters simultaneously, using Sonic's speed, Knuckles' power, and Tails' ability to fly, to conquer massive worlds. This team-based gameplay marks the next evolution in Sonic's gaming career, taking platform gaming to a completely new level. Using the three

formations and the powerful moves that each team member has, Sonic and his friends

combine forces to battle the ultimate evil.

· "Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg" (Nintendo GameCube): Sonic The Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka and SONICTEAM return with their first all-new platform game since the SEGA Saturn era! Darkness has fallen upon a

once-magical land. An evil King who seeks to rule with an everlasting night has captured the creatures that inhabit this realm. Now, a young boy must use the powers of a legendary suit to control special eggs in order to restore light to the land. Gamers will collect special eggs, use them to

solve puzzles and nurture them with items found by exploring the world.

Gamers will be able to hatch the eggs and discover magical creatures with a variety of skills, introducing a strategic planning element to the combat and puzzles. It's up to Billy Hatcher to return light to the land!

· "Vectorman" (PlayStation 2): Gamers become Vectorman, a veritable walking arsenal, on an epic campaign to free his land from an oppressive robotic dictator, Volt, bent on galactic conquest. The

game's dark storyline is packed with explosive combat and vast opportunities

for exploration. Vectorman has all the resources he needs to take on Volt's evil minions including an arsenal of powerful weapons and upgrades. With a focus

on player freedom, "Vectorman's" game design encourages players to explore the world at large and utilize any number of different combat strategies. Whether they prefer the direct approach of guns-blazing action, or a

more cerebral type of combat composed of sniping and full use of the environment,

"Vectorman" will not disappoint. [This title is not yet concept approved by Sony Computer Entertainment America]

· "Headhunter: Redemption" (PlayStation 2): "Headhunter: Redemption" is the gripping story of Jack Wade, a veteran Headhunter

keeping order in a futuristic world overrun with unchecked consumerism, vicious organized crime and mind-controlling mass media. When Jack and his protégé, the sassy, streetwise Leeza X, stumble upon an arms smuggling operation that threatens the status quo, they must work together to deliver an oblivious world from impending catastrophe, confronting their darkest fears

beneath a chilling shroud of evil that blankets the city. [This title is not yet

concept approved by Sony Computer Entertainment America]

· "Otogi - Myth of Demons" (Xbox): Set in ancient Japan and steeped in real-life folklore and mysticism, "Otogi - Myth of Demons" is the story of Raiko, an undead warrior who must stop a ferocious demonic army that has been unleashed upon the Earth. As a long-forgotten doomsday myth materializes, Raiko must quickly master more than 30 weapons and 12 varieties of magic to dispatch endless hoards of demon warriors, massive boss characters and everything else that gets in his way.

· "Sega GT Online (Xbox): Bringing all the thrills of the most realistic driving game for Xbox online via Xbox Live, "Sega GT

Online" will allow up to six gamers to put their cars - and their skills - to the

ultimate test against thousands of gamers from around the country. A blend of deep simulation detail and high-octane arcade action, "Sega GT Online" challenges gamers to qualify for licenses, compete in a series of increasingly competitive races and earn money to soup up their rides and buy newer, more powerful cars. Players can then fine-tune nearly every aspect of their car's performance - from the muffler and brakes to the suspension, body weight and tires, before hitting the online racing circuit.

· "Altered Beast" (PlayStation 2): As a special military coperative, you are sent to investigate a deadly genetic outbreak in a

small West Coast town. Hunted by unspeakable horrors and haunted by your

past, you soon discover that in order to overcome evil, you must become more than evil. The only thing that can save you is your darkest power, the ability to transform into a variety of powerful beasts. As you defeat wave after wave of failed genetic experiments, the line between human restraint and primal instinct will blur, until nothing is left but the savage desire

to uncover the true nature of the beast. Explore your inner demons. Unleash your fury. Alter your reality. [This title is not yet concept approved by Sony Computer Entertainment America]

· "Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution Greatest Hits" (PlayStation 2): More than 500,000 beatings can't be wrong ...SEGA's best-selling

fighting game gets a major graphical and gameplay upgrade in "Virtua Fighter 4

Evolution." But as any Darwinist will tell you, Evolution is not about looks - it's about the survival of the fittest. Stakes are raised as players throw-down against aggressive, highly-tuned A.I. opponents

modeled after the top players from the arcades of Japan, with new exceptionally

detailed arenas, more than 1,500 new costume items and two all-new characters hungry for their place at the top.

· "Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution" (Nintendo GameCube): "Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution" expands the "Phantasy Star Online" (PSO) universe, offering a new style of strategic combat. Combining the excitement of card

collection and deck settings with team-based battle tactics, PSO Episode III allows

users to chat in the lobby about status upgrades and tactics, and then journey to the planet surface to engage in strategic combat using a turn-based Card system. The game continues the story arc of the previous

PSO games, as players once again become Hunters and explore the mysteries of the planet Ragol. Featuring both online and offline play, as well as multiplayer modes, PSO Episode III adds new content and players to the ever-growing PSO community.

· "Virtual On Marz (PlayStation 2): Mech combat meets street brawling in this lightning-fast weapon-intensive arena-based Battle Royal. As a member of "Marz," a Robotic Special Forces unit, players are thrust into the pilot's seat of a giant mech known as a Virtuaroid, an immensely capable machine built specifically for combat. Through a variety of missions on various planets, players set out to defeat enemy VRs,

locate new areas, attack enemy locations, defend allied bases, attack enemy

convoys, and fight alongside other VRs in explosive two-on-two battles.

· "Dororo (working title)" (PlayStation 2): "Dororo" is a modern day action epic adapted from the classic manga by Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy). Like the original manga the game follows the adventures of Hyakkimaru, a samurai haunted by a shocking secret, who is on a quest to uncover his

past and regain his humanity. Players can choose to battle with various weapons such as blades embedded inside Hyakkimaru's arms, a bazooka hidden inside his leg, or weapons that are found during the course of the adventure. "Dororo" delivers the ultimate Samurai fighting experience with intense

3D action from one of Japan's most famous storytellers. [This title is not yet concept approved by Sony Computer Entertainment America]

· "Kunoichi (working title)" (PlayStation 2): A rift to the demon realm has placed Tokyo in great peril. As Kunoichi, a deadly female ninja, you are charged with the task of collecting the scattered pieces of a

legendary weapon while dispatching a relentless army of powerful demonic foes. [This title is not yet concept approved by Sony Computer Entertainment America]

· "Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut" (Nintendo GameCube): Sonic The Hedgehog returns in one of his most popular blockbusters in a special "Director's Cut" edition for the Nintendo GameCube! The original "Sonic Adventure" returns with enhanced graphics and more than five hours

of new gameplay for the Nintendo GameCube. "Sonic Adventure DX Director's

It's goog to see more multi-platform games from Sega, but still... This is very disappointing for Game Cube. We get just more of the same: Sonic Games and PSO.

Where is Skies of Arcadia 2????

Look like Sega is moving where the money is: PS2

Nintendork SPApril 28, 2003

Vectorman?? YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! That game is awsome!!!

Fammy2000April 28, 2003

Sorta sounds like PSO III is the PS Card game we saw a while back.

Sonic going multi-platform: doh!

Wow, so glad NBA2K4, with online play, is not coming to Gamecube. One less game for me to buy this year. Punks.

Mike S says: Sonic Battle sounds like a handheld Sonic version of Smash Bros. I'm highly intrested in this game.

Actually, I can't hotlink to the pics and they're not on the Sega PR server yet pointed to in the press release (although they are in that thread I linked to in Gamecube Discussion), but it's actually set at a 3/4ths perspective (using polygons for the scenery) and uses the Advance sprites. Tails seems to be pointing what looks like a beam cannon weapon in one (or at the very least, it looks like a Mega Man-style arm cannon, perhaps it's just an item).

It does look good, though.

TAYREL713April 28, 2003

Card Game, is this the same card game they showed last E3 with the Nintendo LCD and the broadband adapter being used to network a few Cubes together?

Ian SaneApril 28, 2003

Kind of a disappointing lineup for Gamecube owners. Sonic Team is starting to get into a "milk Sonic and PSO" sort of groove and that's not particularly good when they're practically the only Sega developer that supports the Cube in any serious way. It's rather disappointing to see Sonic go multiplatform not so much because I don't want the other consoles to get him but because "multiplatform" is often another way of saying "for PS2". Sonic will likely get the same treatment as most multiplatform games where the Xbox and Gamecube hardware doesn't get used to it's full potential and everything has to be designed with the PS2 in mind.

I'd like to know where all of these supposed Yu Suzuki Gamecube titles are that we've been hearing about. Where's Virtua Fighter RPG?

SargusApril 28, 2003

I'm very disapointed that Sega wants to bring Sonic to the PS2. Xbox, maybe. But Sonic on the PS2 is just... wrong. We should boycott or something...

Vectorman IMO would be better on the Xbox or GCN, but I'm looking forward to it anyway.

PSO Ep. III looks kinda like Lost Kingdoms, but should be really fun.

Sonic Battle is something I'm very interested in. I'll have to watch for more news about it.

Dang, I wish I could go to E3 face-icon-small-sad.gif

BlkPaladinApril 28, 2003

The reason why they are not showing anything of Skies 2 is probally because their is not much to show. They only announced that they are starting development on it a few months ago, at the earliest we will see it at the next E3. The surprising thing is they are not going to offically show VF: Quest even though it sounds like it not going to hit US shores until early next year.

The new Sonic game sounds something more of a game based around a gimik much like Sunshine was. And it was basically known their intensions of turning the next Sonic into a multiconsole game.

Sonic Battle does sound good.

WesDawgApril 28, 2003

I'm pissed off at this Sonic thing. SEGA brings us some crappy ports and we buy and play 'em, so they decide to ship our exclusives to other consoles. I know its all about money, but... well it just pisses me off.

Perfect CellApril 28, 2003

We got hosed by Sega this year. The new Sonic is Multi plataform I was hoping that it would be exclusive to us. PS2 and Xbox got cool exclusives, and we got Billy Hatcher... oh well... Theres still Namco and Capcom. I just wish Sega would hook us up some more.... instead of Billy Hatcher, how bout an Exclusive Nights 2 Huh Yuji?

VideoGamerJApril 28, 2003

WHAT?!?! VECTORMAN ON PS2! OMFG...!!!!

GOD DAMN YOU PLAYSTATION! DIE!!!!

I am very very angry....

Ninja XApril 28, 2003

Sonic Team AND Amusement Vision support the Gamecube heavily.

PSOIII looks to be just another card game...yes, that's what we need right now...another card game.

I bet a good amount that the game is going to be good, but it is not going to be a system seller. And card games are boring. I am not alone when I say that.

demoncronoApril 28, 2003

at last,a sonic the fighters on a console.....sort of....

wonder if bean and bark will be in it....

ToolvanaApril 28, 2003

Umm, yeah. I love ya' PGC, but damn....
Perhaps I should just cut/paste what I told a buddy in icq...

Toolvana: ---- planetgamecube.com nearly gave me a heart attack due to excitement, only to scroll down the page and have my dreams completely crushed.

Toolvana: The top of the article says, "Sega Reveals E3 Line-up - It includes a new multi-platform Sonic game and...a new online GameCube title! That's right, Phantasy Star Online Episode III is on the way."

Toolvana: So naturally, I nearly piss myself with joy, only to scroll down the press release to read that bull---- about a ---- card game. ----

Mods, don't freak out and ban me. I'm not being serious. I just wish "C.A.R.D. Revolution" would have been included in the name at the top of the article. face-icon-small-wink.gif

Toolvana, I don't care if you weren't serious. You shouldn't be posting language that you know is censored and just sticking in characters to get past the language blocks. -Bloodworth

joshnickersonApril 28, 2003

As long as we get Sonic goodness on the Gamecube, I'll be happy. And Sonic Team seems to love the cube so much, I think they'll do as much as they can to make sure it's not a "PS2 port"
Though Sega's continued support of the Xbox still puzzles me. Sega Xbox games continue to collect dust at local stores, and I've talked to several Xbox owners who consider Sonic to be as "kiddie" as Mario... though said owners were little punks who were barely teenagers...

ArbokApril 28, 2003

Sega continues to give more support to the Xbox over the Cube... I won't complain about the PS2 support, as that makes sense. But more Xbox support and less Gamecube support from Sega? They really need new management.

Grey NinjaApril 28, 2003

That guy needs to be ousted. NOW.

"Sky"April 28, 2003

Sheesh, why complain about support when there's Billy Hatcher? I want a NiGHTS sequel probably more than most people here but at the same time I understand if Naka doesn't feel that he can come up with an idea for a sequel. At least then NiGHTS won't be rehashed.

Billy Hatcher sounds like a unique platformer to me even though it's odd. So what if Sonic is multiplatform? You still get it on the Cube and Naka surely will concentrate more on Billy Hatcher anyway. Even though they are called Sonic Team, Naka's more interested in original games rather than the Sonic series.

Billy Hatcher is a "cool exclusive" to me and I bet it'll turn out a lot better than most of those Sega games on the other consoles.

That said, I am really glad that Virtual On Marz is coming to the PS2. I am also disappointed that they changed Vectorman from the uniquely designed character to another generic robot. Otogi most likely won't turn out well, plus it's not a Sega game, it's a From Software game, Sega's just the publisher. Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution I probably won't get until it drops to Greatest Hits pricing considering I have the original Virtua Fighter 4. Finally... let's hope Altered Beast isn't too shallow face-icon-small-smile.gif

DjunknownApril 28, 2003

If there's one thing you have to keep in mind about Sega, its like this.

Think of Sega as a prostitute. Yeah, she's good, she's REALLY good at what she does, but she only follows one thing: M-O-N-E-Y. Sega's out to get as much money from her 'clients' as she possibly can (Though for a company looking for a merger, they are certainly very productive, hmm?)

As far as Sonic going 3 ways, it stings a little, but let's see what its all about before we jump to conclusions.

Just remember: You can't make a ho a housewife. face-icon-small-wink.gif

NintegaApril 28, 2003

Not a bad line up. Can't really complain over here. I'm real interested the new PSO 3. I'm just glad we're getting a new Sonic game regardless if it's multi.

Perfect CellApril 28, 2003

Yes and Nintendo is supposed to have it. When Nintendo sold Rare, we were told Nintendo would use the money to get more exclusives... and more cooler games. We havent seen this happen. Only companies shun the GCN and blame it for their bad sales. Sonic 2 Batle was one of the best selling games for Sega last year, outselling games like Sega Gt 2000 Jet Set Radio Future and Gunvalkarie, yet they are still making the most games for the Box.... its sooo disapointing The best selling Sega game on the cube and it becomes a multi plataform game..

StrellApril 28, 2003

Sigh, I hate to say this, but Sega seems bent on their own collapse. They constantly pour money into the Xbox, giving it exclusive titles and (more or less) above average games, only to have them sell crappily. Then they scale back their operations, talk about "restructuring," and basically send MORE games to the Xbox.

I don't understand it. From what I know (and I haven't done much research so I could very well be wrong), Sega's games sell the best on the Gamecube. I'm pretty sure the sales of all the Xbox games have lagged (in Japan defenitely, in America it just seems likely), but Sonic 2/Collection/Monkey Ball 1/2, etc., don't they sell fairly well on the GC? Someone got some figures? I'm really curious.

So their solution is to put MORE games on the Xbox? Forget it. I'm far more tired of Sega's tactics than Nintendo's. They are giving away their games on the Xbox, which is a sure sign of trouble for them. And they put more exclusives there. PS2 and Xbox BOTH get more games, exclusive games. We get BIlly Hatcher? I'm not convinced about that game til I get to play it. Running around with chicken wobblers on my head doesn't seem fantastic in any way.

I'm all for leaving Sega. That might sound stupid or whatever, but I'm not in the mood for whining about it much more than I am now.

NintegaApril 28, 2003

You can't generalize and say Sega games sell better on Gamecube. Just because Sonic 2 Battle, Monkey Ball 1/2, etc. sold well on the Gamecube doesn't mean that Jet Set Radio Future or Panzer Dragoon Orta would sell the same.

I still don't support the way Sega determines what games is suited for what console. If they wanted to adopt that idea, maybe they should've put all their games on all 3 console and then make that determination. Just like what they are doing with Sega Sports titles. They don't sell well on the Gamecube so they stop developing for it. I don't blame them. They're in it to make money. I'm just hoping this merger has some effect on how Sega does business from now on.

Microsoft pays them to have titles on the machine so their is no financial damage to them, but their rep may be being damaged by this.

Unfotunatly to some the mergers they are doing will have little impact on the way they do business since they are the stronger business so their management basically stays in place.

mmortal03April 29, 2003

interesting that they are remaking Altered Beast. If only it was coming to Gamecube. face-icon-small-sad.gif

Jason XApril 30, 2003

This sucks

What I wanna know is, why does Playstation get Alter beast, Virtua Fighter, and Vector Man
X-Box gets Head Hunter and other cool games.
AND GAMECUBE GETS SOME STUPID GAME CALLED BILLY THATCHER AND A GIANT EGG!
It's not fair.

Gamecube already has a reputation as the kiddie system and it's gettign worse.
They finally get some cool games from sega like Sonic plus there cool games like Metroid Prime and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Now here comes Sonic Heroes which should rightfully be for Gamecube, but nooooooooooo

Sony has to get it's grubby hands on it.

I think everyone should sign the petition that other member posted.
Oh and I signed man, I know where you coming from.

I don't really care about X-Box because they have some Sega games such as Jet Grind Radio.
Sonic and Sony don't mix. Old school like Nintendo and Sega need to merge and cooperate to defeat the evil Sony Empire.
NINTENDO 4EVER!!

aycrMay 01, 2003

If Sega merges with Sammy, Sega will go under Sammy's Management.

Sega's in financial trouble and Sonic is their biggest franchise, it only makes sense for them to make it multiplatform.

Sega has announced the least non-sports games for XBox, there's no need to worry about that.

The Playstation 2 by far has the largest userbase, it's a sound business decision to release Altered Beast and Vectorman on that platform.

Petitions will do nothing, don't waste your time.

Sega will obviously announce more, new, games at E3, don't make up your minds one way or another until then.

BlkPaladinMay 01, 2003

But its Sammy who is mergeing with Sega not the other way around. Sega does have a debt but that doens't make a difference when you are talking about mergers it the stronger(larger) business. Sega is the stronger and bigger of these two businesses.
