Mother 1 + 2 Announced!

...And 3 teased? Oh, what's this? The first commercial even!

Mother 1 + 2 has been announced in Japan for the GBA, and we've got the first commercial for you. (Thanks Quiter!)

The original Mother for Famicom was never released outside of Japan. Apparently, its graphics have been slightly updated in this port. Its SNES sequel, starring Ness, a little boy who Smash Bros. fans will recognize, was released worldwide as Earthbound and quickly became a cult hit. Mother is highly regarded as a very funny, underrated, and unconventional RPG series.

Mother 1+2, which obviously contains both of these classic RPGs, will be released on June 20th for 4800 yen.  There's no release

date for Mother 3, but there's a teaser at the end of the commercial for this brand new game in the series.  We'll

have more information when we find our Japanese correspondent.  For now,

check out the commercial!

YES! My copy of Earthbound has a dead battery and I would love to be able to buy a new version and get Earthbound 0 with it. I really REALLY hope this gets a North American release. Considering every SNES RPG under the sun has gotten ported to the GBA and brought to North America this should too.

I wonder what they would call the NES Earthbound in North America.

Grey NinjaApril 14, 2003

BEST NEWS since the return of Square.

Btw, what's the teaser for Earthbound 3? At the end of the commercial, it just says something like this:

Mother:
For use on the GameBoy Advance... gunmaken.... (don't know that last word)

loserfish13April 14, 2003

if this is fake AGAIN im gonna cry.......

does anyone know the source. and is it gonna be in the home of the free (america, show your suport) too?

wait is it the land of the free or home of the free....?

Grey NinjaApril 14, 2003

Quick post... My translation might have been slightly in error... I have been looking at it a second time, and some things don't match up. I will ask my Japanese teacher, and get that last word anyways.

babergApril 14, 2003

Land of the Free, Home of the Brave.

And if you see it on PGC, it's legit. Period.

As for Mother, I never played it the first time around and so I for one am looking forward to it. And on my new GBP to boot!

That'd be pretty sweet to play Earthbound 0

BloodworthDaniel Bloodworth, Staff AlumnusApril 14, 2003

Sorry, we can't allow you to link directly to the image. It definitely says that they're also making Mother 3 for GBA, but I don't know what "Gunmaken" means either.

reyontoyenyApril 14, 2003

Wow. I'm still waiting for the movie to download. I've never played a mother or earthbound game.

No all i need is the NA release announced...E3 cant come soon enough

Mother 3 for the GBA? face-icon-small-mad.gif Where's the GC lovin'! The GC needs a popular Japanese RPG more than the GBA does.

Are Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Rune II supposed to carry the GC in Japan all by themselves? There better be some serious GC lovin' at E3, or I'll.... I'll! face-icon-small-mad.gif

I'll rage and vent impotently in these forums again like I am now! face-icon-small-wink.gif

Uh, I hope this isn't a remake/rework of the ill-fated N64 Mother 3. That would have been easier to move UP to the GC and not DOWN to the GBA. It may be a all new version.

Ah, rework. Twice as fun the second time.

Ian SaneApril 14, 2003

"Mother 3 for the GBA? Where's the GC lovin'! The GC needs a popular Japanese RPG more than the GBA does."

I'll agree with you on that. Of course there has been tons of situations where I've questioned Nintendo focusing on the GBA and ignoring the Gamecube. I remember when the GB Player was announced and I figured it was a Cube killer app. Surely every GBA owner who complained about the dark screen would buy a Gamecube to play their GBA games on TV with perfect visability. Then Nintendo released the GBA SP out of nowhere and basically killed a huge chunk of the GB Player's appeal before it was even released. Nintendo's use of the GBA/GC link cable so far has been more of an incentive for Cube owners to buy GBAs when it should be the other way around. Camelot makes a major RPG series of the GBA and their projects for the Cube are merely sequels of Mario sports games that arguably didn't need sequels in the first place.

The GBA doesn't need Nintendo's attention yet it gets most of it. The Gamecube needs Nintendo's attention and gets ignored. If the Gamecube was a human child it would grow up to be a psycho killer. face-icon-small-wink.gif

Going back on topic it doesn't really make any sense to make Mother 3 for the GBA when it's already getting a port anyway. The GBA doesn't need a new Earthbound game if it's already got a port while the Gamecube desperately needs an exclusive RPG. This is like rereleasing A Link to the Past and then making Wind Waker for the GBA. Why put all the Earthbound games on the GBA?

mouse_clickerApril 14, 2003

While Mother 3 on the GBA is certainly nothing to get down about (in fact, it's GREAT news), I definetly think Nintendo would be better off making a high profile, high quality, RPG for the Gamecube, which needs it a LOT more than the GBA, which already has quite a few stellar RPG's. Anyone who knows Japanese, I would make sure the translation Starmen.net gave is correct.

JollusApril 14, 2003

Nintendo is pushing more power behind the GBA because that is where most of their money if. Look at the sales numbers for the GBA and the Gamecube and you can see that.

mouse_clickerApril 14, 2003

It's a catch-22, Jollus- a paradox. They're pushing the GBA more than the Gamecube because it makes more money but you could argue just as well that the reason it's making so much money is because Nintendo's really pushing it. All that GBA pushing leaves the Gamecube falling behind. The GAMECUBE could be the one pulling in all that money if Nintendo puts it's power behind IT.

JonkApril 14, 2003

Since I cant post in the GBA forum about this, Starmen.net has posted a TRANSLATED VERSION of the commercial. I work for Starmen.net and asked the webmaster of starmen.net if I could link to the site (and said it was ok) and if Billy posts about the SM.N, I believe its ok face-icon-small-smile.gif Enjoy the new TRANSLATED MOVIE AND SCREENSHOTS!

mouse_clickerApril 14, 2003

Grrrrr..... this whole Mother 3 for the GBA thing is REALLY pissing me off. When is Nintendo going to wake up and realize that the Gamecube is going to FAIL if they don't support it with some big name titles. Pretty much everybody in Japan already has a GBA, and almost all of them love Mother, so naturally this would be a GREAT way to really boost GC sales in Japan by making a Gamecube Mother game. Maybe it's getting Mother 4, ala the Metroid treatment we just got.

The infamous prototype dubbed it "Earthbound Zero". That makes the most sense anyway.

The curious thing is, what'll they call Mother 3 in the US? They might want to switch back to the Japanese names, so they might do a bridge titling, "Earthbound: Mother 3" or something...

StuffageApril 14, 2003

The most likely reason that Mother3 is coming out of GBA is because the dev team for Mother3 for N64 had big time problems programming in 3D. By making the next game 2D on GBA, Itoi can keep his same dev team and hopefully turn out a better game on GBA than on GC.

mouse_clickerApril 14, 2003

Stuffage: Yeah, the dev team did have problems with polygons and 3D, but I'm sure they've gotten past that milestone by now. And if they haven't, I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't replaced the team with people who CAN handle 3D. In my opinion, there's absolutely no reason not to release Mother 3 for the Gamecube, that is, unless they ARE making Mother 4 (which I seriously doubt, although I can hope).

Grey NinjaApril 14, 2003

Sorry, my apologies. I mistook the 3 for Ro, which was really confusing me. The font that they used made it really difficult for me to read.

Yes, it does say that they are also making Mother 3 for GameBoy Advance. I still have no clue what gunmaken means though... my Japanese teacher wasn't available.

all i know is that it is about damn time we get some earthbound lovin'
i have been waiting for the announcement of earthbound on gba and a new earthbound for some time now
and not only is mother 2 (earthbound) on the cartrage, so is mother (earthbound 0)
hopefully mother 3 will be awesome- as long as it keeps the same craziness as the first 2 i cant wait

mkeyesApril 14, 2003

Mother 3 should be called Earthbound 2, because they promised us Earthbound 2 in Earthbound and I've been waiting dagnabbit!

NarmaKApril 14, 2003

Guys Guys calm down, it says for use with gba.
Wind Waker is also for use with gba but it is in fact a GameCube game.

Im guessing they are refering to a gba gc conectivity thing.

Well maybe im wrong but it would make alot of sense wouldnt it?

NarmaKApril 14, 2003

Alright i just found something at starman.net

"The story of Mother 3 does not seem to link back to the past games in the series, despite the fact that the end of Mother 2 lead to a sequel."

this is refering to the n64 mother 3, so maby mother 3 is a true sequel to mother 2 (earthbound).

umm get what im saying?

"""MOTHER" and MOTHER2"
It is called "MOTHER 1+2."
It becomes one software.
It comes out by the Game Boy advance.

Then, on the day, the special series was prepared mostly.
It is not Shigesato Itoi who superintends a day mostly.
To those who is called Shigesato Itoi who made "MOTHER"
About the game "MOTHER"
It will interview.

The coverage was performed over several hours on the other day.
Then, the told language was so deep that it was surprised.
This Shigesato Itoi also thinks that such an intention could not be found by him, either.
However, language told gradually there,
It was in Shigesato Itoi's deep place fairly.

At then, the last of the interview
It is made to be pushed out by something.
Shigesato Itoi told about "MOTHER3."
Probably it is only the turn of such talk.
Shigesato Itoi is about "MOTHER3."
it was not able to tell -- coming out -- I think whether there is nothing

We are the interview.
It has and carries in the told turn.
To the last, it is about "MOTHER3."
We planned to have announced you.

However, it unites with the announcement of "MOTHER 1+2."
Many people search for the information on "MOTHER3."
Visiting this is expected.
Then, materials were immediately collected from Shigesato Itoi once again.
As the beginning of the special series which starts it today
First, I carry.

To the start of -
It is - about "MOTHER3."

-- "MOTHER3" is being under saying.
Itoi Yes. However, it is me well.
Since it is an "ex-convict" about work of a game
As opposed to such things
It says whether to repeat the same thing.
A thing like fearfulness will be felt.
It is prudent extremely.
After completing, I want to announce in fact.
But when saying that "MOTHER 1+2" comes out,
Naturally, doesn't " "MOTHER3" come out?"
The voice to say will go up.
Then, it is with "it does not come out" for making.
It was disagreeable to have told a lie one by one.
Then, first of all, it says ,
It decided to announce you.
-- It once became a development stop.
It says .
Please let me know a frank feeling.
Itoi Himself who has discouraged many persons
Thus, it is although it may be getting angry if it says.
saying -- me -- for an individual
It is very delightful.
I want to want to take out and to take out truly.
Since it is making
The things itself of coming out are individually.
It is delightful even if it takes.
Once there is no fact that it was not able to take out
Although we announce you with a more sufficient feeling
Well, I will say very.
That it is reserved surely
True feelings.
-- For the person who was waiting purely
I think that they are delightful news.
Itoi It is kind and becomes sushi and encouragement.
But a whistle and a drum are ‚Ç‚ñ‚Ç‚±– carried out well.
We announce you in a lively way,
He plans not to carry out too.
In fact, it is the talk of "MOTHER" in a series.
After having you read the talk of "MOTHER2",
The way I let you know about "MOTHER3"
Although it thought that it was good, it is this talk too.
Don't carry out at once first.
-- Although it is heard one by one, a platform first
It became the Game Boy advance.
Itoi Yes. Many,
Many people for whom it has waited, without giving up,
"MOTHER3" is sure enough.
To the inside of size called the Game Boy advance
You will think whether it is settled.
To be sure, it is as a design for my beginning.
It was not what was conceived in such size.
Therefore, aren't used ?
Although there was also a talk of "wanting to make it a movie"
While inquiring, it turns out that it is impossible.
Or ,
Since it thought that a thing like a size was different
‚¯‚Á‚«‚å‚_ and which were given up.
-- It pats and it is ?. Saying
It is just going to be worrisome most.
Itoi Speaking most directly, being at a certain time.
"How to take out with the Game Boy advance
Isn't it? The proposal " was received.
Then, it is since it was not attaching a thought to me, either.
On that spot, it answered "It does not understand."
‚Ù‚ñ was not found.
And it thought thoroughly.
Then, for having felt, he is inside free from not knowing.
I hear that it had lapsed into the great work principle.
Me of those days,
The way of making depending on which power went into the shoulder very is adopted.
If it says very or says extremely
"surprise " I want to see
"All that he can imagine will be put in."
It was going to see and just it tended to take out the great work with the touch .
It is the reason which was going to take out the great work and suffered a setback.
But the different way of asking more
It has seemed to be in others at last.
That it was able to consider to such ‚Ó‚¤
‚¯‚Ç which is not well called all,
"MOTHER3" is the Game Boy advance.
I think that it is one of the reasons which will come out.
-- How to consider to such ‚Ó‚¤ changed.
Is there any thing like a cause?
Itoi Although it thinks that it is variously
Supposing it mentions one of them
"MOTHER 1+2"
It will come out by the Game Boy advance.
It is having carried out the test play.
Even if the character of 3D does not move
Even if the picture drawn thickly does not come out one after another
me -- having thought -- saying
To ‚Ó‚¤ which can be tasted and which is cut and said
I can consider now.
Therefore, it is called the Game Boy advance.
‚µ
If it says by the bigger frame
A thing called a game is surrounded.
a time -- ‹C•ª‚Ý -- the thing also changed
I think that it has influenced.
It plays, even if it gives up work, and it is a way.
if I will hold on to a game even if it continues an all-night sitting
I think that it has been no longer such a time.
Anyway, he also includes and it is the now most difficult one.
Since it is other men's "thing for which time is got."
Therefore, it is called the Game Boy advance.
Handicap Hurd is used.
As
Think that what is necessary is just to become such a game.
A view is changed to such ‚Ó‚¤.
Do I hear that it was begun make "MOTHER3"?
-- Or ,
Please let me know in the range about which it can speak.
Itoi Fundamentally, the talk is.
It is made based on my scenario.
The development itself is just going to progress steadily.
It is with an intention like the play-off of Japan Series before.
Although made
the intention that it is likely to obtain in Ο to an opening first game now
I think that the power of the shoulder will be extracted and it will tackle.
‚½ -- feeling -- coming out
just for a moment -- every -- resting at frequent intervals -- playing
"-- it is fairly interesting -- ?v ‚Á‚ÄŒ¾‚Á‚Ä -- ‚炦‚é
Since he wants to make it such a game
Are such a thing, and it is said that it feels, and comes out.
I am pleased if you are waiting leisurely.
that -- thus -- if it says
Although it thinks that there are also ‚Á‚ÄŽv‚¤ people which "are ‚È‚Ÿ, ~ ‚ñ"
I consider -- having -- ‚¿‚Ⴄ -- things -- well
I also think unavoidable thing kana.
however -- primarily
"MOTHER" and "MOTHER2",
I think that it would have such lightness.
Therefore, if "MOTHER3" is made, it will be.
daringly -- "without " ‚Á‚Ä
As
I wish to make it such a pleasant game.
Is ?
They are ‚¯‚Ç which will be ‚Á‚Ä•·‚«‚½‚¢, and the midst currently made.
Please make an announcement at least this.
Circumstances detailed to a slight degree something,
Probably, it will be carried next.
Since it thinks that it can read in the way of a series
It is glad if I have you also read that one.

For the time being, it is about "MOTHER3."
Understanding is above.
While it is thankful, withholding
Although it was Shigesato Itoi who had chosen language carefully
It said, after thinking for a long time at the end.

"Take down a large load and move on with your steps.
Since it does its best, I need your help well in how."

Now, from next time, it is as the original schedule.
The talk of "MOTHER" by Shigesato Itoi is carried.
That wonderful game was loaded with what.
What it was not known at all until now
Since it is told at a tune much much lighter than this time
It is pleasure pleasing! "

"I wonder what they would call the NES Earthbound in North America."

"The infamous prototype dubbed it "Earthbound Zero". That makes the most sense anyway."

To be precise, the prototype didn't call it "Earthbound Zero", the fan-translators did.

The story, for anyone who hasn't heard it, goes like this. Nintendo translated Mother 1 for the NES, but never published it (for whatever reason). Somebody managed to get a prototype of "Earthbound for the NES" out of Nintendo HQ somehow at some point (I still can't believe how many people on the net seem to believe that it's a legit release, and that Nintendo only sold the one copy, but they still refer to it as a prototype), and sold it on eBay. At the time, a group was trying to hack the Japanese game in order to fan-translate it. They tracked down the guy who bought it, and gave him the money they had previously raised for hiring a translator, so he'd let them just copy the translated game. The ROM was unplayable as-is, so they had to hack it to get it to work. While they were at it, they changed the opening screen to "Earthbound Zero", which was what they were going to call their fan-translated version.

I've seen "Earthbound Zero prototypes" go up on eBay a few times since then, but they always show "Earthbound Zero" in their screenshots, which is the biggest giveaway that it's fake. It's either a complete ripoff, or it's someone who figured out how to copy a ROM onto a homemade cartrige.

I've also seen a couple of "prototypes" on eBay for Final Fantasy 2 and 3 for the NES. Always funny stuff.

mouse_clickerApril 15, 2003

"Guys Guys calm down, it says for use with gba."

Really? You sure? I guess I could see how "for use with GBA" would be confused with "for GBA", but I could also see the reverse happenning.

No, actually it says it's being made for GBA. The guy that was trying to translate it earlier got his verbs mixed up.

KulockApril 15, 2003

Ah, my mistake. Still, though, it was an official translation, and not a fan-translation, they just simply hacked it a little to work correctly (dumping errors caused by bit rot on the actual prototype, maybe?) and changed the title screen. OK.

NarmaKApril 15, 2003

Earthbound zero wasnt a fan translation, it was translated into english by the makers but never released.
one copy of earthbound zero was auctioned off and some people made an agreement to rent the cart long eneugh to copy the rom file, and that is why you can now find it on the internet today.

ruby_onixApril 15, 2003

Yeah, "Earthbound Zero" wasn't a fan translated game. The game was translated by Nintendo of America. But the name "Earthbound Zero" came from the fan-translators, because they're the ones who made the ROM available to the net, and that's what they were going to call the fan-translation they were working on.

Should you ever happen to come across one of the prototypes, it'd just be called "Earthbound" (even though that's the name that they used for the SNES game).

NOA using the name "Earthbound Zero" if they bring Mother 1 & 2 over would make sense, but they have no particular attachment to the name.

couchmonkeyApril 17, 2003

I don't believe Nintendo supports the GBA more than the GameCube. For one thing GameCube titles are a lot harder to develop, and for another thing, half of the games Nintendo releases for the Gameboy Advance are ports.

In my opinion, the reason GameCube isn't getting Mother 3 is because the project was an absolute disaster on the N64 and HAL (or whoever was developing it) will wait a long damn time before ever attempting it again. I don't deny that Nintendo should be making a huge effort to get major RPGs on the GameCube but if nobody wants to make the game then it's better not to force it. I think Nintendo would do just as well or better to pay Square Enix to release (good) ports of Final Fantasy X and X-2 on the Cube.

reyontoyenyApril 17, 2003

While the GameCube could use big titles, I'm sure an Earthbound GameCube game is not what Nintendo is looking for. The only people who may be interested (especially in America) are people who have played the first game a long time ago, or have became interested after seeing Ness in Smash Bros. I'm pretty sure a Mother GC game would be great, but it won't turn the tide in competition. I'm looking forward to seeing this odd RPG hitting the GameBoy.

yeah they do- they could use a really good one- and earthbound is just that
its pretty big in japan- so its going to sell anyway its released- i personally would prefer the gc but the gba will have to do to get my new age retro hippie fix
but i think the gc does have a strong rpg lineup comming- tales of symphonia, ffcc, the new rpg from monolith soft (cant recall the name- i think it begins with a b)
but earthbound would help sell gamecubes- in japan and in america
its become a cult hit over here in america town
personally i just want to see any earthbound so i guess gba will do
hopefully nintendo has a plan to make another earthbound for gc, but we shall see

Ocarina BlueApril 20, 2003

Maybe Nintendo is reviving the series completly, like how they released Metroid Fusion on the GBA, then released Metroid Prime on the GC.

RidleyApril 20, 2003

I hope the series is being revived. Earthbound is what got me into RPGs, so the series is rather significant to me. Not to mention all the replay I got out Earthbound. More than any other RPG.

JonkApril 20, 2003

Unfortunately, The EarthBound/Mother series is totally up to Shigesato Itoi. He makes all the calls and he has the partial rights to the series. He is the one that saids if there is going to be another EarthBound game. Itoi decided to do a re-release of mother1+2 because they are old games and many people dont have famicom or super famicoms and he wanted people to experience that again, and a new format (the GBA) that he thinks would be great for the series.

Also, from the pressure of the fans for mother 3, he decided to bring mother 3 out of the grave, but in a new form. Because Itoi wants to include as MUCH story as possible, and 3-D development will most likely slow it down, much like the EB64, so he went with GBA. It would be very interesting to see Mother 4/EarthBound 3 in a 3-D form and maybe the engine developed on the N64 mother3 version may be used, but it is a far far hope.

For now, I am just glad that mother3 is coming out so we can expereince the story, and I hope at least that the development team takes the franchise up another step in graphics for the goodness of newcomers looking at the series. I know the EarthBound/Mother series isnt a graphicly concentrated game, but I want this series to gain more fans and have a little more justice done to it besides than just grahpic reviews.

mouse_clickerApril 21, 2003

Bah, 3D holding them back is just an excuse to make a GBA game. Look at Ocarina of Time! Look at Wind Waker! 3D didn't hold them back! In regards to story, look at Eternal Darkness! Amazing graphics and easily the best videogame story to date. Now I'm not trying to downplay Itoi- far from it, the man is up there with Miyamoto- but if his people honestly can't handle 3D, as with EB64, they need to hire a new staff and FAST. It's never a good sign when your graphic artists can only work with sprites.

And to anyone who says EB wouldn't translate well to 3D, let me just remind that's exactly what they said about Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, and we all know how well each of THEIR forays into 3D turned out.
