The 3rd Annual Game Developers Choice Awards were held as part of the GDC and Nintendo fared quite well.

The 3rd Annual Game Developers Choice Awards were held tonight in San Jose as part of the ongoing Game Developers Conference. As with the earlier AIAS Awards, Nintendo did quite well with Animal Crossing picking up a Game Innovation Spotlight Award and Metroid Prime picking up three awards; Rookie Studio of the Year, Excellence in Level Design, and the coveted Game of the Year.

Accepting GOTY

While the coronation of the Game of the Year was exciting, the highlight of the night was definitely the honoring of Gunpei Yokoi with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Last year's honoree, Yuji Naka, did an excellent job in presenting the award to Yokoi's family with a touching speech that highlighted Yokoi-san's career and credited him as a respected rival that helped push Sega developers to work that much harder during the fierce Nintendo/Sega battles of the 80s and early 90s. Congratulations to all of tonight's winners, particularly the Yokoi family, and thanks to the International Game Developers Association for putting on a good award show for game developers by game developers.

Good for Metroid Prime. Now Nintendo can still put a "Game of the Year" sticker on the case and have commercials with "Game of the Year" plastered all over them. Of course just because they CAN do it doesn't mean they will though I assure Microsoft or Sony sure would have if the shoe was on the other foot.

I have one complaint though. The Metroid Prime graphic on the monitor in the first pic has art from Metroid Fusion as well. That's kind of a silly mistake (though technically the Fusion suit is in Prime).

All I have to say is THAT is class for you. And for those who thought Metroid Prime was robbed at AIAS, here's some redemption. A little sticker on Metroid Prime's case would be enough to make rival fan boys puke and say "GDC sux man...."

This piece was on yahoo News and the posts to that were interesting. Here's what one Fan Boy said(They shall remain nameless to protect the stupid.):

"didn't see any mention of GTA:Vice city, what's up with that? No other game last year came close in originality and game play. I think whomever voted on this is full of it and doesn't really play the games!"

So sad, anyway, on to E3.

To Mike, Billy & other PGC staff present at the coronation of Gunpei Yokoi's lifework:

Did you manage to make any pictures of Mr. Yokoi's family? Aside from being honored, did they have anything to say?

Did anyone record Yuji Naka's speech and is it going to be written out for an article? This seems very interesting to hear what he had to say face-icon-small-smile.gif

So only Animal Crossing and Metroid Prime picked up awards? Well one might as well look at the positive what with Prime receiving Game of the Year and all. Like Ian mentioned however, Nintendo isn't (aren't?) likely to throw out new commercials emphasizing all the acclaim their games have been showered with, especially games that have been out for a handfull of months...although if you're an insomniac and watch late night television as I do, you will see a TV spot for GTA: Vice City just about every night these days. That repetitive commercial is the very reason that my brother, a casual gamer, bought a Playstation2. So Nintendo, consistent advertisements for long periods of time work! do it already! face-icon-small-smile.gif
