Australian News Update

Nintendo updates with some news you probably didn't know...and some that you did.

If you've signed up for Nintendo Australia's newsletter, you probably received the first one just recently. It links you to a member's page, where it points out some of their latest updates (such as previews of NBA Courtside 2002 and Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader) along with wallpaper and a Pikmin movie. They've also updated their list of playable GameCubes.

Aside from that, there's a small notice that says:

GOING TO AN AFL GAME?

Then you’ve got to look out for GameCube’s Super Smash Bros. Challenge. It’s on before every game on the main scoreboard. (MCG, SCG, Colonial Stadium and Stadium Australia)

Considering that AFL is like a religion here, it's pretty smart of Nintendo to advertise GameCube before AFL matches, and Super Smash Bros. Melee at that. Not only that, but GameCube commercials have definitely been running during AFL broadcasts (possibly also during other times).

One more piece of GameCube information that's been sitting in my inbox for longer than I had intended - a warning for gamers buying the PAL GameCube. It will NOT be compatible with Stereo A/V Cables used with the Nintendo 64 and the Super NES. Although you can fit them into the GameCube, they can damage your TV if you do so (I have confirmed this with Nintendo Australia). Seeing that the GameCube A/V Cable is included with the system at no extra cost, you're probably wiser just to use it anyway. A sure way to tell whether you have a GameCube A/V Cable or a N64/SNES one is to check the colour of the plug. If it's grey, it's N64/SNES - if it's black, it's for the GameCube. The black GameCube cable is safe to use on all Nintendo systems.
