While exploring Melbourne's centre with a friend on Sunday in 30 degree heat, we decided to check out Myer to see if there actually was a playable GameCube on display in the city. And yes, the rumours are true! Heading straight for the Electronics department (Myer Melbourne spans two streets and five levels, and the Electronics department was on the opposite street), we avoided all of the Xbox whoring and discovered the GameCube on display behind some Xbox shelving.

It didn't take too long for us to get to play the demo disc (which is the French version, although all the games and menus are in English). From the menu, you can select either Luigi's Mansion (demo or movie), Wave Race (demo or movie), Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (demo or movie), Pikmin (movie only) and Super Smash Bros. Melee (movie only). There's also a sign which has a large list of Launch and Upcoming Titles, and a Nintendo sign with the hilarious statement "Pre-order thrills³".

Having a thorough play of each of the titles for about 40 minutes (the GameCube is a PAL unit, and it's hooked up to a rear-projection TV and a Sony Surround Sound system), I can safely say that I want to own a rear-projection TV and a Sony Surround Sound system. Um, I mean, I want to own a GameCube.

So for all you readers living in or around Melbourne, Australia, you can check out the GameCube's melt-in-your-hand controller (not to mention the rest of the system) at Myer Melbourne, Lonsdale St. side, Level 4. Myer's also taking pre-orders for the Cube, so you can do that while you're there. Watch out for the Xboxes, though - one nearly toppled on top of me and squashed me flat.
