LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Constantin Film and Sony's Screen Gems have inked a deal for a theatrical sequel to "Resident Evil." Paul W.S. Anderson, who wrote, directed and produced the original film, which bows March 15, will write and produce the sequel, which has tentatively been dubbed "Resident Evil: Nemesis." Impact Pictures partner Jeremy Bolt will serve as producer.

Anderson created an original story line for the first film, which is a prequel to the best-selling video game franchise, whose six Mature-rated game incarnations have sold more than 16 million copies and grossed more than $600 million worldwide for Japanese video game publisher Capcom since 1996. The March 15 film introduces original characters and is set in an underground research facility called the Hive, hidden miles beneath the Midwestern town of Raccoon City. The film ends above ground with the remnants of a metropolis ravaged by destruction.

The second film will combine characters from the first film with characters from the video game.

"I'm already thinking about the sequel, and there are lots of opportunities to blend characters from this film, like Alice (Milla Jovovich) and Matt (Eric Mabius), with characters from the games, like Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield, in a new side story set within the game's universe," Anderson said.

The sequel is expected to introduce the monster from the third game, called Nemesis, as the first film showed the beginning of Matt's transformation from human to infected creature as a result of the deadly T-virus. Should the first film do well, Anderson expects the sequel to be fast-tracked, though he doesn't want to rush a second film into the marketplace.

"After 'Mortal Kombat,' I wasn't involved in 'Annihilation,' and the audience that we built up with the first film wasn't happy with the sequel, which killed the film franchise," Anderson said. "I wouldn't want that to happen with 'Resident Evil,' so I'll be involved in the sequel."

Said Bolt: "It's not easy to adapt a game to film, as we've seen with a long string of bad game movies, and one of the reasons we've had success, at least according to the gamers who attended test screening of 'Resident Evil,' is that we know the source material. Paul played all the games and respects the universe. He also has a love for zombie films, so he was able to blend that into a film that both gamers and a broader audience will enjoy."

Impact Pictures will continue to work with Capcom on the film franchise out of respect for the universe, not because of contractual obligations. Capcom is developing multiple new "Resident Evil" games, including a remake of the original game for Nintendo (news - web sites) GameCube in May and a new prequel and sequel. Anderson said Capcom is working with Screen Gems on cross-promotional opportunities for the film's eventual DVD release.
