The Line Starts Here!

by Billy Berghammer - September 13, 2001, 8:03 am EDT

We made it. Less than 12 hours to go! Check out the first shots from the FRONT of the line!

Japanese GameCube Launch: Second in line Bay-Bee!

Japanese GameCube Launch: C'mon Billy, grab it and RUN!

We arrived in Akihabara at approximately 6:15pm, and looked for the lines. We looked and searched, and even asked. Nothing. We walked out of the Laox store and saw two Japanese people, and asked them where the line started. That was it…and ironically one of the people left. So it was me, Hong, and one Japanese gamer from the beginning. So we went and grabbed some food and we're chilling.

I ran around for about 20 minutes and checked out store displays while Hong held our place. Some stores had their displays up, and some STILL didn't. Rather lackluster if you ask me. Steven Kent found us, as did my good friend Yutaka (yes, from the N64HQ) from EGM and 64 Dream, and they wished us luck and took off. This is very very strange. I mean, there's more security than the people in line.

Japanese GameCube Launch: Ahhh... the time is nearing

In a sense, I'm disappointed, and surprisingly, launch is looking rather bleak for the big N. I guess that's what happens when you don't promote your systems launch. This is totally different from any other launch that I've seen. So far it's dead. But we're staying. I think more people will show up before the last train comes to Akihabara…but for now…we're it. Another very weird thing…there's only one person from Japan here so far (Hong is an exchange student from New Zealand).

Japanese GameCube Launch: Monkey spanking love

Japanese GameCube Launch: Too little too late?

So much for tradition…but at least it's only 10 or so hours until I nab my baby. I'm confused. More to come later.
