Pre-Show thoughts

GameCube love, meeting Peter Main again, and dislocating my shoulder. The press event was interesting and amazing (and crappy) to say the least...

It's approximately Midnight as I type this. I'm about to keel over due to exhaustion and pain. But overall, today was a most wonderful day. Nintendo put one hell of a show on for us, and I'm proud to be one of the PGC representatives at the event.

The presentation itself was a lot different than any other I've seen before. A lot different than last year. Tokyo's "Big Sight" was probably one of the coolest venues I've ever been to. It's right on the ocean, and if the Triforce was a building...this would be it. I'm not kidding.

The game footage we witnessed was more than impressive. It was nice to see more polished versions of Pikmin, Wave Race, and Luigi's Mansion. I wasn't all that impressed with Luigi's Mansion at E3, but this viewing we got today made me drool. I can't wait to get my hands on Nintendo's launch titles. But where is all this Metroid footage we're supposed to see? 2 seconds? ACK!

Of course, the big things we got to see today was the Kirby Tilt and Tumble GC/GBA setup. That was waaaaaaaaaaaaay cool. I wish we could actually get to try this out. It's a shame we'll have to probably wait until E3 2002 until we get to try it out, but we'll see. I think this will be out sometime in the spring-summer of 2002.

Then there was Mario Sunshine. W O R D. This was the game I was really waiting to see. Even though this is just a slice of the game, it's looking to take Mario 64 to the next level...and I'm more than ready. Interesting pack that Mario had on his back eh? I'm not quite sure what it is, but I think it's a jet pack of some sort. I'll be looking into this a little more later.

Then of course, the big surprise was Zelda. I personally loved the changes they did with it. Sure, it's totally different, but when seen in motion, I think more people will like it. We really didn't get to see that much. Sure it's not what we've seen before...but so what. I have not met one person here who didn't like it. I think it's spilling with personality. Shigeru seems to be REALLY excited about it. I know I am.

The third party stuff was also impressive, albeit, short. Sonic? Eh. 1080, Soul Calibur, and Rune was what really grabbed my eye. Incredible stuff if you ask me. I just want to play it!

Due to interviews and well, being the media whore I am, I didn't play one GameCube game today, but I took video footage of everything. Every single title was polished. Smash Bros. was even faster than it was at E3. Plus we got to see and play the Arwing missions in Star Fox. They looked absolutely fantastic, and from what I've been told...play nicely.

I then had to scoot off to the Shigeru round table discussion. That was also interesting, and we'll have audio coming later from this event. Most of the questions centered around Zelda, and Mario Sunshine, and most of the big points I've already posted. It's always facinating talking to Shigeru.

On the way out we saw Peter Main with a lot of the NOA execs. As I waved good bye the pressure of my 80lb backpack pulled my shoulder from it's socket. Not good timing. Peter actually helped me get my pack off my back, even though he was late for an appointment. Peter, you are truly the man. It was probably one of the most embarrasing moments I've ever had, but I don't think anyone that saw it will forget it. I know I won't. That's the only crappy thing that happened today.

Personally I'm really satisfied with all that went on today...and the show hasn't even begun. Tomorrow it's game day for the press, and I will definately be getting my game on. Hopefully my shoulder will be a little better tomorrow. Hehehe.

Well I'm in dire need of some sleep, but the staff will be kicking out some more love all day long. Sit back, grab some pixie stix, and enjoy what is Spaceworld 2001.
