A note about Reviews ...

by Rick Powers - July 29, 2001, 9:18 am EDT

Rick's gotten questions about his scores for ChuChu Rocket, so he takes some time to explain how our review system works ...

I've gotten several pieces of mail from folks wondering why my scores for Graphics and Control in my ChuChu Rocket review were so low.

First, they're my opinions. Those scores are absolutely arbitrary, and reflect how I felt the game did in those areas at the time I wrote the review.

Second, ChuChu Rocket is a puzzle game. There isn't going to be a great deal of innovation in the control or graphics that will really make you stand up and say "Wow!" A game like Castlevania would get an 8 in graphics (from me). Tony Hawk would probably garner a 9. I could not honestly give those same scores to ChuChu Rocket.

Lastly, our Final Score is NOT an average. A game CAN be more than the sum (or average) of it's parts ... ChuChu Rocket being an example of a simple game being done to near perfection.

One other small note ... it can be easy to miss, but there is a SECOND page to all reviews on PGC. There is a "Next Page" link at the bottom of the page where we talk more specifically about each area of the game, and justify those scores.

I have updated my ChuChu Rocket review to make some of these points a little clearer, but do try to keep these things in mind when you read our reviews. And I do implore you to READ our reviews. Don't just look at the scores, because they can be misleading. If you MUST look at any score, look at the Final score only. It's a better indicator of what quality of experience you'll have with a title.
