News about Sega Sports, what AM2 could be working on and that ever-so-persistant rumor of Mario & Sonic appearing together.

I just got an email from “Ingo the Ranch Hand” who directed me over to Tendo Box for this exciting report. It comes from the latest issue of the English Nintendo magazine N64:

"Despite Sega admitting that it felt a bit odd to see a Nintendo console in their own [E3] stand, they're fully committed to Gamecube. As well as future conversions of the best of the Sega Sports games - including NFL 2K2 and NBA 2K2 - rumours suggest a conversion of the excellent Daytona USA is already in the works. But the really big news is that we'll soon see a joint Nintendo-Sega title that'll bring Sonic and Mario together for the first time. Belief-Beggaring."

Pretty fantastic news any way you look at it. At E3, Sega confirmed Sega Sports titles would appear on all consoles (although it seems PS2 and X-Box will get them first, GameCube next year) so it is good to see NFL 2k2 and NBA 2k2 being specifically mentioned. Same thing goes with the conversion of Daytona USA; it makes sense too as AM2 is confirmed to have Cube projects underway.

So what about Mario and Sonic? Well, Tendo Box suggests it could be the RPG with Nintendo/Sega characters that was rumored so long ago… (Though it’s more likely those rumors were a somewhat distorted first indication of Phantasy Star Online v. 2 & it coming to NGC). Well, one of our recent updates to our Super Smash Brothers Melee preview discusses long running rumors that Sonic will be a character in Smash Bros… Could this be more evidence that it might happen, or could there be another game in the works?

With Sega's strong show of support this early on for both Nintendo consoles, it becomes hard to believe we won’t see Sonic somewhere on GameCube. Whether or not it will be with Mario remains to be seen… But here’s hoping!
