Will Jet Grind Radio come to GameCube?

by Max Lake - June 4, 2001, 2:33 pm EDT

Max met Smilebit’s Takayuki Kawagoe during E3 and asked him this very question.

“Ogenki desu ka?!” (“How are you?”) screamed Smilebit’s Takayuki Kawagoe excitedly as he took the stage of Sega’s Press Event at E3.

“If you have energy, you can do anything!” Kawagoe-san beamed to the crowd, as a translator repeated his words in English.

“Our president should be here on stage, but he did not want to get on a plane. So, here I am!”

After his charming introduction, Kawagoe-san showed off footage of GUNVALKERIE, a very cool looking shooter/adventure game that will be a launch title for X-Box. After this, the game everyone in attendance was dying to see: Jet Grind Radio Future.

JGRF features more insane tricks, with strings of combos; advanced skating and highly detailed landscapes – yet retaining it’s “comic book” look, JGR Future was stunning. (We will include the preview footage on our E3 video!)

After the presentation, I went to the JGRF kiosk to get a closer look and say “what’s up” to Kawagoe-san, who was standing nearby. As I oogled over the JGRF footage (sadly, it wasn’t playable) I told him I really loved Jet Grind Radio.

“No, no! Jet Set Rajio” he laughed.

“Well, I have to say – I love this game so much, that I have both Jet Set Rajio and Jet Grind Radio. I was so happy that when I got the American version and saw it had the extra levels!”

“Hey, yeah! I have both games too!” piped up Adam Kraus of Tendo Box.

Kawagoe-san smiled and I asked the question many JGR fans & Nintendophiles have been pondering for some time:

“Is there any chance JFG Future might come to GameCube?”

After a second, his interpreter began translating his answer.

“We cannot say ‘yes’ … We cannot say ‘no…’ But for now, it is on X-Box!”

I continued: “Well, Jet Grind Radio is a really fantastic game! One of my favorites! I hope you do decide to bring it to GameCube!”

Nodded his head graciously. “Thank you, VERY much.”

Not exactly the confirmation we wanted to hear but it doesn’t rule out the possibility, does it? Not at all. After GameCube’s spectacular showing at E3 and some enthusiastic from some of Sega’s other development teams, it’s very possible that if/when Jet Grind Radio migrates to other consoles, it may just hit the Cube. Smilebit may be concentrating on X-Box for now, though versions of their games would be very welcome additions to the GameCube library. Cross your fingers, gang!
