Planet GameCube's E3 Thank yous!

by Billy Berghammer - May 28, 2001, 8:31 pm EDT

The fellahs at PGC wanted to say thanks to a couple people, organizations, and a few material things for their love at E3 2001. In memory of E32K1 we give thanks....

E3 2001 has come and gone. The staff of Planet GameCube want to thank all the people, things, and organizations that helped up with everything we needed. Without further ado, here are our sincere thanks!

Billy would like to give thanks…

  • The entire staff of PGC: You people are what makes this site happen. With your hard work we continue to make things happen. Seeing what this site accomplished during E3 was incredible. If it wasn’t for this team…we wouldn’t have been as successful. Now get BACK TO WORK!

  • To all the people that were patient with our server.

  • Justin Nation…you are the man. The programmer, the daddy, and the man who gave Planet GameCube a home. May you code on like a BAD MF! Thanks for commanding the “home team”, and coordinating PGC Share.

  • To the staff of PGC for making the journey to E3.

  • Max: Thanks for being you. Thanks for taking my shit. You are insane. Give me back my Sin and Punishment cart!

  • Pat Lake: Thanks for explaining Max to me.

  • Limewire: On behalf of my wallet and myself, thank you!

  • All of the other Nintendo/video game sites that came up to us, hung with us, or what not. The more sites out there that give Nintendo love the better! It was great meeting you all!

  • Denis Dyack: Thanks for one of the coolest interviews we’ve ever done on Planet. You are truly one of the most amazing and sincere developers out there! Thanks for truly caring about what the gamers think. Other developers should take lessons from you.

  • Thom Leonard. You are the man! Thanks for the tour, and kicking everyone off of machines for us! But Nintendo, he was really nice about it. I swear! It was a small bat.

  • To all the Nintendo booth babes. Thanks for countlessly demonstrating the GameCube controllers for us people that have no coordination and know nothing about the GameCube. Word!

  • To that one Star Fox Adventures Team Nintendo girl: Thanks for taking my shit.

  • To that one Rogue Squadron 2 booth babe: Thanks for just being you. And standing there. And being you.

  • To the Wave Race Team: Thanks for making my dreams come true. You better add those levels we talked about. You know…Lava and Sundae levels? Bring it.

  • To all the developers, and game companies who read this site. Thanks for talking to us, and listening to our opinions.

  • To all the behind the scenes people at Nintendo that we don’t know about that made Nintendo shine at E3…thank you!

  • Max, Rob, Kosta, and Ty: The camera crew. Thanks for your help with video footage!

  • To the Nintendo DJ’s, thanks for keeping the beat kickin.

  • Jim Beam: Thanks for being you.

  • The Denny’s waitress that wanted to commit Hari Kari. Next time we’ll bring more people. Get ready.

  • Kosta Andreadis: PIMP DADDY K! You are the king. Even though you won’t be able to make the US Swim team. I’m sorry you didn’t feel well. Thanks for taking me (cough) to school on Wave Race. Hope to visit you some day! Say hi to your sister for me!

  • Stephen Farelly: You’re magazine makes me sick. I want your job. You drink beer like a girl. Give me that chicks shirt! She was supposed to be MINE!

  • To the bastard that cut in line for the GBA giveaway dealie. You didn’t deserve to win a GBA. Karma will catch up to you.

  • Comfort Inn LA: Thanks for dealing with our shit. Thanks for being comfortable and not freaking out with 36 people in Ty’s room. Thanks for letting me pee in the pool.

  • Rudi: Thanks for the beer and the fine entertainment. Laughing at the X-Box was never so fun.

  • Samba de Amigo: Thanks for being you.

  • The dude selling bacon wrapped hot dogs across from the convention center. Thanks for keeping me regular.

  • Factor 5: Thanks for bringing Star Wars fans a real Star Wars experience. I can’t wait to play more!

  • Los Angeles Convention Center Security: Thanks for the pre-show love.

  • The Pueblo Nuevo Thrift Store and Janitorial: Thanks for being there.

  • Bryan Erwin: You are my brother.

  • John Barry: You are Captain Powder. Always and forever. Your lasagna sucks.

  • Tendo Box: Thanks for keeping Mikey at home. I didn’t want his cruddies on my bed. They are stinky.

  • Cloudchaser: For the love of the Games.

  • Tim Mulligan of Golin Harris: You rock. Good to see the new blood in the house of “N” kickin’ ass out of the gates.

  • Beth Llewelyn: Thanks for deflecting all of our questions.

  • PETERMAINCO: Thanks for taking our shit.

  • Mountain Dew: Thanks for keeping us alive and giving us that “Pep” that people enjoy.

  • LOUIETEHCAT: Thanks for shitting on my keyboard.

  • Shigeru Miyamoto: Thanks for continuing to make us drool and give us gamers goosebumps. Thanks for the surprise that is Pikmin.

  • Saffire, Hal and Dave Rushton: Thanks for the excellent roof top arcade, and the first ever look at Young Olympians!

  • The cab drivers of LA: Thanks for aiding our sore feet.

  • Breaky Boy: Thanks for the Chun Li doll! Wooopahhh!

  • Nintendo: Thanks for not disappointing us! Oh yeah, and thanks for forcing us to go to Space World again.

Max would like to give thanks...

  • Above and beyond all others, to the PGC staff for working their collective fannies off. Everyone who went worked like crazy and extra special thanks those at home, especially m’man Justin Nation. Everyone worked hard to make sure PGC was the place to be during E3. We all sacrificed time, money and energy to do this and it paid off. I can’t thank you all enough for proving to me what I already suspected; PGC is indeed the team supreme!

  • To Billy for bringing Sin & Punishment and Samba De Amigo with maracas!

  • To Dragona and Andres, who scored me a Nintendo bag while I asked Peter Main and Shigeru Miyamoto questions at the Q&A. I would not have gotten one otherwise and now owe them a firstborn child or something.

  • To Andres for bringing me a copy of David Sheff’s Game Over and a SUPERDUPER thanks to his fiancée Stacey for buying me a Slinky and Billy a Chun Li toy! You two are too kind!

  • To Ty for not shaving! YA STUBBLE RIDDEN BUM! Ah well, at least Ty is too cool to worry about appearances. I can dig it! (I look insane whether I shave or not!)

  • To Ty’s parents for naming their other son “Max.” (I seriously could not believe Ty’s brother was also called Max, until he asked me “do a lot of people tell you they have dogs named ‘Max’ a lot?” All too often, my fellow Max!) We need more people named “Max” in this crazy world of ours.

  • To hardcore PGC fans Yorrike, Rimmer, Joshums for tracking us down and hanging out! Sorry if I scared you when you just randomly showed up… (“Who the HELL are you people?!”)

  • To Nathan Heckel, for proving the power of karma – (dissing PGC in Billy’s hotel room the night before he made an ass of himself in front of the world.)

  • To John, Aldo, Tony, Adam and all my other Cloudchaser / Tendo Box homies. It was great to see some of you again & meet some of you for the first time! I wish we had more time to hang out! Bring Mikey next time!

  • To Peter Main for cracking us up with his cute Canadian accent every time he pronounced “console” as “council.” (No offense Mr. Main!)

  • To Shigeru Miyamoto for showing up at the pre-show conference and being so entertaining! (Seeing him in person is any Nintendophile’s dream come true, a fact that had the crowd eating out of his hand.)

  • To anyone and everyone who told me they read and/or enjoy Planet GameCube during the show. We don’t get paid, so compliments help keep us going! It was almost surprising (and very rewarding) how much we heard this during the show.

  • To Dolowhite for appearing in the PGC E3 video!

  • To all the colleagues in the field I got to meet: N64 Gamer, Tech TV, Cnet, GIA, Gaming-Age, N-Sider, SonySource, Segadojo, Nintendojo, Fran Mirabella III and the rest… What an E3, eh gang? Keep up the good work folks, wherever it is you’re slaving for!

  • To Kosta Andreadis and Stephen Farrelly, who came all the way from Australia to cover the show for N64 Gamer and were an absolute trip! Kosta gets extra-props for letting me cut in line so I could play Rogue Leader for the first time just as the show was ending.

  • To Denis Dyack, not just for the PGC interview but for being so cool to everyone who wandered within earshot. The poor guy was losing his voice the second day from talking to so many fans! That’s amazing and beyond admirable. You da man, Denis.

  • To Johner Rhiel, my first PR contact and also host to my very first E3 appointment three years ago at Infogrames. He’s now at Golin Harris and though we didn’t get much of a chance to catch up (both PGC & Nintendo folks were super busy) it was great seeing him again.

  • To Perrin Kaplan (never met her but Billy said it was her) for screaming in vain at everyone not to push each other to death as the gates opened to Nintendo’s pre-E3 press conference. My ribs appreciate your effort, Ms. Kaplan!

  • To Sonic Team’s Yuji Naka for putting up with my questions and giving great answers.

  • To Smilebit’s Takayuki Kawagoe for having contagious energy and being a part of Jet Grind Radio (or Jet Set Rajio) one of my favorite all time games.

  • To Amusement Vision’s President, Toshihiro Nagoshi, for walking right up behind me and giving me a Monkey Ball toy while J.Wood and I played the game on GameCube! (And then stuck around to chat and answer questions! What a guy!) Also thanks to his kind assistant, Masae Otoshi!

  • To Jay Boor, now a rep at Midway, for being just as funny and nice in person as he was way back at PSMOnline. (And also pointing out how we’ve both lost hair since our last encounter two years ago…) Great to see ya again, Jay!

  • To Midway for the licorice and soda served at appointment – my lunch that day.

  • To G.O.D. for having free food!

  • To Mike Orlando, for being a good new recruit even though I didn’t get to meet him personally.

  • To David Dienstbier, for another great interview, staying an amazingly nice person despite success and for taking the Turok series back to what made it great!

  • To EA’s Melvin C. Lenzy for answering our questions about Madden; good luck with the new gig Melvin!

  • To NOA’s Beth Llewelyn for her time & another great interview with Planet!

  • To Tim Mulligan of Golin Harris, for seeking out Billy before the conference. “Hey, Planet GameCube! So… where’s Billy?” (We were scared, thinking Nintendo wanted retribution for PGC confirming the GameCube logo early. Instead, he only wanted to say what’s up and tell us that Nintendo actually LIKED PGC! Whew!)

  • To NOA’s Thom Leonard for being a great host for the Nintendo booth tour and for giving Billy bunny ears in our group pic!

  • To IGNCube for not updating after the show! You guys are the BEST! (Hang in there, Matt & Fran!)

  • To everyone at Nintendo and its second-parties. Your hard work is clearly paying off and gave us lots of great material to work with at the show and for some time to come. We’re looking forward to the months and years ahead!

  • To the thousands of people who tuned their browsers into Planet GameCube during the show. It’s your fault our server was sooooooooo SLOOOOWWWW. But ya know what? WHO CARES! Thanks a lot for checking us out! We’ll do our best to give ya reason to keep coming back!

Justin Nation would like to give thanks...

  • To all the people that helped with PGC share! Thanks again for donating your bandwith, and hard drive space to PGC!

Rick Powers would like to give thanks...

  • Thanks a million to all the extraordinarily kind Nintendo booth staff and "booth babes" for being as cordial and friendly as they were during an excruiatingly long three days.

  • Thanks to all of the fans that recognized us on the show floor and took time to say "Hi." You make Planet GameCube what we are.

  • Thanks to Nintendo for bringing to life a console that many claimed wasn't possible.

  • Thanks to the Sony folks that despite our affiliation with Planet GameCube, took time to talk to us and get our perception on the show and the battle ahead, and took our comments and criticisms to heart. Competition makes for better games.

  • Thanks to all of the developers that had a change of heart after seeing the GCN games in action, and have decided to support Nintendo and the GameCube. We're delighted to have you aboard.

  • Thanks to all of the other Nintendo-coverage sites (as well as Sony and X-Box sites) for putting differences aside, and joining us in the sheer exhilaration that was E3. It's all about the games, baby.

  • Thanks to Denis Dyack for granting us some of his invaluable time and talking to us at length about ED and Silicon Knights. If I were in Ontario, you'd have my resume in a heartbeat.

  • Thanks to the PGC staff that stayed home to help compile and post information for us, and helping keep us online, especially Justin Nation who busted his ass.

  • Thanks to all of the PGC staff that went to E3, and kicked ass putting up impressions, news, and whatnot ... not to mention getting little sleep, crappy food, and more people than a hotel room should be able to handle. You've all made me proud to be a PGC staffer.

  • Thanks to Kosta for allowing us to borrow some of his footage. Sorry you got sick, buddy!

  • Thank to Billy Berghammer for going WAY above the call of duty, getting us all into the show with ZERO problems, and keeping us

in line. You're the glue holding us all together, my man. I'm glad to be working for/with you.

  • Lastly, thanks to my lovely wife for bringing me to my senses,

and telling me to go to E3, despite having just lost my job. I don't know what I was thinking. Thank you, Sweetheart. I love you, and it's good to be home.

David Trammell would like to give thanks...

  • to Matt (Cassamawhatever). I saw him on the first day of E3 and he was cool.

  • to that guy from Rockstar Games who's business card I gave to Billy. He was really cool as well and hopefully they'll have more to say about GameCube next year!

  • to the guy (and gal) Max and I met at Midway booth. Again, not much GameCube info, but free drinks and licorice kicks no matter where you are!

  • and I guess the Konami guy I spoke to was ok, considering his employers stance on GameCube.

  • Finally, I met an unnamed Retro employee at a Wave Race kiosk who endured my compliments about Raven Blade and asked me to keep an open mind about Metroid Prime (he ran away before I could give him my business card!).

  • That's basically all I can think of, aside from the PGC crew itself which is composed of nothing but awesome people.

  • Oh and Silicon Knights in general for running such an awesome "booth" with guys demonstrating everything personally for three days, including the industry's best company president, Denis Dyack. I can't wait to play Eternal Darkness.

Andres “Breaky Boy” Rojas would like to give thanks...

  • to Max for making me write that RPG feature so I could legitimately get into E3 as staff

  • to the entire PGC staff for being such great people (I knew there had to be a reason I've been a fan since the N64HQ days ^_^)

  • to Ty for letting me and 4 other people room with him. (We're bringing 8 next year! ^_^)

  • to Stacey (my fiancée), Dragona, and Ty for conspiring to get me that Sega Saturn

  • to Stacey again for being who she is, and especially for pushing me to do everything I could to go to E3, and for giving me some extra money to be sure I could eat. You mean the world to me, and I'm dragging you to LA with me next year, so that way I won't miss you as much! ^_^

  • to Denis Dyack for being quite possibly the coolest developer in the world. It'd be a dream to work for you one day. (Was that sucking up? Yes. Was it shameless? Of course, but I meant it, so I still have my pride. :-P )

  • to Shigeru Miyamoto for blowing that whistle at the pre-show conference.

  • to Koji Kondo for composing the theme to Luigi's Mansion which I haven't stopped humming since I first heard it.

  • to Claude Comair for taking his time to talk to me about game design, for giving me insights into how he works, and most importantly, for all the advice he gave me concerning my (hopeful) future place in the game development community. I missed an appointment, and an hour's worth of time with the games at Nintendo's booth, but that talk with you was the highlight of the show for me.

  • to Nintendo for deciding that the Wars series should finally be released outside of Japan. It's about time!

  • Thanks Billy, for keeping us all together, and for keeping PGC financially afloat. Bring Louie next year! Don't worry about Rick, I'll be Louie's personal bodyguard if he needs it! ^_^ Oh and by the way, you should thank Stacey for that Chun Li action figure! o_O

Jon Lindemann would like to give thanks...

  • to all booth babes (especially the one that sold our buddy Stephen Farelly her Gamecube blouse for $40, and that cutie that

stood by the Eternal Darkness demo)

  • to Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2 for locking up when I was next in line to play it, screwing up the only chance I had to play it during the entire show

  • to Shigeru Miyamoto, for politely dismissing Jonny Metts and I when we asked for a picture as he was leaving with his luggage in hand

  • to Nintendo, for giving us such a spacious booth

The Michael “Younger Plumber” Cole would like to thank...

  • Thank you to the guy at the Luigi's Mansion Kiosk who gave me my lovely GCN squishable. Thank you, EAD team (R&D1?), for deciding to make a Luigi game, and thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto for allowing them to make the game. And thank you, Mr. Kondo and your associate I was not able to catch the name of for the catchy Luigi's Mansion songs!

  • Thanks to Denis Dyack for talking to all of us, and helping me out with ED. Thanks to HAL for SSB: Melee--even if Luigi wasn't playable at E3. Thanks to any other 1st, 2nd, or 3rd party GCN developer that displayed their GC stuff.

  • Another thank you to the guys that are making Mario Kart Advance and Warioland 4 for making my E3 GBA experience wholesome.

  • Thank you Charles Martinet for putting on those hilarious shows each day at E3! I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you, man! I'll never forget Wario saying, "I'm SEXY!!!!"

  • Thanks to all of the PGC staff, both at home and in LA, for making the experience great! Especially Max for helping me get in and Billy for all the fun stuff we did togegther. And thank you guys at home for not trying to e-mail bomb me after I was able to get in when you couldn't, even though I was supposedly on the "home team."
