GBA Piracy in the works

by Billy Berghammer - May 25, 2001, 9:18 am EDT

$150 bucks can buy you the hardware to illegally duplicate GBA games. Nintendo can't be happy about this. Full details inside.

I came across a site that will be selling an item called the Flash Advance Linker, and the Flash Advance 64M card.

Evil devices

What will you be able to do with these items? Here's the specs for the linker...

-Highspeed printer port connection

-Can be used with 4 AA standard batteries

-Cool transparent design

-For Gameboy Advance only (cannot be be used with GB Color)

-Can be used with a standard 9V power supply

-Tons of free Software available, for Gameboy Advance and for PC

-Download and upload gamesaves into/from your original Game Cartridges!

So basically, you can save your entire GBA cartridges onto your PC. So then what do you do with that? Well, you can put it on the 64 meg card that's sold separately. Here's the company description for what you can do with all of this technology.

The Flash Advance 64M is the first professional mass produced flash Card for the Gameboyâ„¢ Advance.

Just like a Memory Stick from Sony, or like a Smart Card or Smart Media Card you are using for your MP3 Player, it will simply hold the game data in it's Flash Memory. Once you have sent games, demos or programs to it's memory using the Flash Advance Linker, it can simply be plugged into the Gameboy Advance and it will act like an original game -- there is 100% not any difference!

The Flash Advance 64M will also allow you to store savegame data. This means once you've opened a lot of levels or you got some extra points in your game, you won't need to start from the scratch - it will save the game status just like an original cartridge with the game. Savegame data can be stored on your local PC Harddrive too, so you won't loose any data when you are using the flash card for other games.

Flash Advance 64M can be re-written, feel free to use it how often you want, as said, just like any other Flash Card on the market (Smart Media, Memory Stick etc.).

The Flash Advance 64M is furthermore the perfect choice for any professional Gameboy Advance developers or even home developers - Create your own games using your PC (free software is available) and simply use the Flash Advance 64M to show your game/demo to friends or test it on real Hardware. If you believe it or not, even large software companies are developing their games using exactly this Hardware and this methods.

Obviously, they're really trying to drive home the "develop your own GBA games at home concept". Sure. And you bought those papers for "tobacco smoking purposes." Please.

Ultimately what these items can be used for is trading GBA games over the internet. For less than $150 you can get this hardware. Seeing the rate of software piracy increase across the globe, I'm sure Nintendo will be pouncing on this pretty quick.

We're not going to give you the link to places that sell this illegal hardware. Planet GameCube does not condone the act of software piracy. It's bad. Evil.
