Luigi's Mansion - Major New Details

by Jonathan Metts - May 17, 2001, 12:17 pm EDT

Could Luigi's Mansion be just one world of a much larger game? Is this indeed just part of the new Mario? PGC investigates.

In discussing the Luigi's Mansion demo shown at the press conference yesterday, our man Billy Berghammer expressed that he still thinks Luigi's Mansion is just part of a much bigger Mario game. This morning, after about half an hour on the show floor, Andres (BreakyBoy) told me that he already beat the entire Luigi's Mansion demo, and that he was beginning to think Billy was right about the game. I decided to dig into the matter myself, and here's what I learned from various Nintendo reps...

There is much more to the game than we're seeing.

The game will "evolve" as you progress.

Although everything takes place in the mansion, you can also go outside and possibly underground and in the attic.

The Ghostbusters-style gameplay is only part of the game, although everything does involve the mansion and the ghosts.

Ummm, wow. I'm not exactly sure what to think right now, but there is obviously something going on here. Yesterday we were told to expect the new Mario game at Spaceworld...will Luigi's Mansion be included in it, or will it be a stand-alone launch title? We honestly don't have a conclusive answer right now, but we'll definitely keep digging for info.
