Ed's Pre-Show Thoughts

by Ed Shih - March 19, 2001, 11:33 am EST

Well, GDC is going to be going into full effect in a few hours, it's about time Ed put up some pre-show thoughts.

GDC 2001 will pretty much mark my first year of being involved with PlanetN2000/PlanetGameCube. Last year, I went to GDC to attend some tutorials and volunteered to help Billy dig up any news on "Dolphin." Of course, I didn't find out much and actually missed the big "delay to 2001" announcement since I was in tutorials for most of the time. True, I did nab a lovely "Dolphin Developer Kit" (squeeze toy and stylish bag) which eventually made it over to Billy, but for the most part Nintendo didn't have much to offer at GDC.

One year later, I'm going to attend the conference sessions (the guts of the actual conference) and will report any news to PGC as part of its staff. I'm fully armed with digital camera and audio recorder (though I'll be eating Kraft Macaroni N Cheese for a while to make up for it) and looking to rock. Of course, I have a feeling that Nintendo will be equally elusive this year. The one definite piece of Nintendo news will come from Thomas Engel's session on GameCube audio. You can at least expect to get the highlights (and hopefully a lot of audio) of that session.

Other than that, we'll see what developers are saying (or not saying) about GameCube, hopefully get an interview or two, and just try to enjoy mingling with developers from around the world. Well, that's as far as PGC business is concerned. I'm sure I'll get a lot of info and advice that'll help me take the next step towards becoming a game designer. Of course, it's only a few hours before the sessions start, so I'll wrap this up and get my ass into bed already. I should be back later tonight. Good night.
