GameCube Expands

Looks like Nintendo is planing the GameCube for the long haul.

IGN has received a leaked version of the GameCube SDK (System Development Kit) documentation. According to this SDK info, the GameCube will have the possibility of expanding it's amount of ARAM (Auxiliary RAM). Currently, the GameCube's ARAM is at 16MB. This number could be expanded to 48MB though. This means that the total system RAM could reach 75MB.

Also, the GameCube's optical disc drive will have a speculative prefetch system. This means that the system could load information, which will be needed later on in the game, into the ARAM. So, when you expand the ARAM you can preload more data into it. What this boils down to is that the GameCube could load enough information into the ARAM that there would be little if not any load times in the games. This seems highly possible, based on Shiggy's comments on trying to eliminate load times for the GameCube.

Currently, this is still a rumor. While it is very possible that the GameCube could expand it's RAM. It is not a public statement from Nintendo though. It is just a possibility. It should also be known that these SDKs have been out for a while, which means it is highly possible that this documentation is outdated. There have probably been some changes to the kits. But this is still a very real possibility that stands a very good chance of making it to the market. The RAM expansion would probably be released at a later date, in order to extend the life of the GameCube. Much like how the 4MB expansion pak was released late in the N64's life to extend it's life.
