Some of us will have a Spacer's Choice to make.

Obsidian's newest RPG will be hitting Switch in just over a month.

The Outer Worlds has been confirmed for a March 6 release date on Switch, following its October release on PlayStation 4/PC/Xbox One. The game will have a MSRP of $59.99.

Although it will be available at retail, the box will contain just a download code. The file size for the Switch version has not been disclosed.

I guess when it comes to lousy business practices Obsidian learned from the bethes- I mean best.

I always think it's BS when the retail copy is just a download code. If i'm buying the retail version, it's because I want the physical copy. If I want to download it, i'll buy the digital copy.

BTW, I also think it's BS when they charge full price for the digital copy. They are saving a lot of money with the digital copy, so they should pass the savings on to us instead of just using that to make extra profit.

I'll just hold out for a discount on the digital copy, assuming the reviews of the Switch version hold up well.

We're hitting an awkward transition between physical and digital. I imagine in 10-15 years we will fully be in the "pay a premium for a physical collectors edition" realm. I would imagine the larger publishers will offer what the various limited run-style publishers offer for all games. The big retailers like Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Best Buy still command a large swath of game sales, so they have to put up something in the interim while keeping costs low enough.

I like to think in the future we will be able to just buy blank write-able cards that we could upload games onto. Nintendo did something like that back with the N64DD I recall. You could pay to download a game in a kiosk to a game card, and then overwrite it with another game at a later time.

This is a game that always seemed interesting but I was holding off for the Switch version since if I had my way I’d play literally everything on Switch. And since I’d be buying it digitally either way the big news here is irrelevant to me.

For me I'm more worried about the delay coupled with the lack of information on it. No footage of the game on Switch has been released, and I'm worried it will turn out to be a poorly optimized port they try to downplay until after release.

My bummer is now I'm in a two Switch household (me & my son each have one) and we'll likely get a third Switch system for my wife when Animal Crossing comes out.

From what I've seen, we can't transfer digital purchases. My son & I both pass around the Smash cartridge, but couldn't share the DLC characters (we bought it for his Switch, not mine).

If we get Outer Wilds, there wouldn't be a way for us to trade the cart between systems.

There are some well written articles from people in a dilemma like yours and they worked out a semi-workable solution where their portable/personal Switch is the "main system" for one person and the switch that stays at home (communal/kiddie system) adds the other's as alternate users. That way each person can still play on their own system without needing a license check and the communal system is always online and available to play everyone's digital purchases.

I think this was the article that covers how to best do it, hope this helps! https://kotaku.com/if-you-have-two-switches-here-s-how-to-share-download-1838438317

They're not even doing the partial download route? Odd stuff.

That said, I somehow missed when this was announced for Switch. I'll probably get it at some point if (when?) the price drops cheap.
