Mo' Measuring & Comparing Consoles

by Max Lake - January 14, 2001, 10:26 am EST

Lets compare all of the consoles' looks to each other.

Right around the dawn of the New Year and just prior to Microsoft’s unveiling of the X-Box at CES, I put up this picture, representing a difference in size between the X-Box and GameCube. Some people thought I was trying to slam the X-Box but that wasn’t my intention. I was simply flabbergasted by the great size difference between the two systems. X-Box looked enormous! Ty wisely pointed out that it may be even more telling of how tiny the NGC is. (Heck, it could be my lunch box!) Not long after the pics were posted, I got a couple interesting emails. One was from a different artist going by “Tony,” who had made his own high quality comparison pic & threw the PS2 into the mix. He sez:

“As a basis for size the standard DVD tray was used measuring at 5" and then scaled down to 50%. That leaves the size of the consoles as follows: (Length/Width/Height in inches) Xbox: 13*10.5*3.5 NGC : 6*6*4.34 PS2: 12*7*3”

The super-secret artist behind the original comparison pics also contacted me, returning with a new size comparison picture. Although the quality isn’t as nice, it adds both the PS2 and N64 for comparison. He claims: “I decided to give the X-Box the benefit of the doubt and make it as small as possible (considering a DVD's width of 4.75 inches) yet it's still a damn big system. I'd say this is the best-case scenario for X-Box. It can't possibly be any smaller than this.”

I couldn’t decide which to post since I appreciated getting both. Naturally, you can click either picture for a bigger, closer look (they may take a little bit of loading). Eyeballing the two pictures shows they’re pretty similar; they may be pretty close to the mark! I’m not trying to claim that “smaller is better” by posting these, though I do think this is an interesting size comparison. Remember guys n’ gals, “size doesn’t matter” and it shouldn’t—the games are what counts.

Finally, you’ll notice the second picture depicts the N64 being bathed in ethereal light, possibly representing it being assumed into the afterlife… That, or the PS2 sitting next to it may have stuck a cherry bomb in the N64's cartridge slot to finish it off.
