Silicon Knights: On Dolphin

by Billy Berghammer - May 16, 2000, 1:20 am EDT

We are elite. We speak with the Knights in Cyber Armour!

During the last Day of E3, I met with Denis Dyack, President of Silicon Knights and James O'Reilly Director of Technology about the news of Dolphin development. We grabbed some floor outside West Hall, and sat down (which is quite relieving at E3) and had a little chat about their company, and there new deal with Nintendo for Dolphin love.

PN2K: So tell me a little about the Background of Silicon Knights...when was it founded...location...etc.

Denis: Silicon Knights was founded in 1992, in Ontario, Canada. Eternal Darkness is our first game for the N64.

PN2K: I can't believe that's your first N64 title! It even got nominated for Best of E3!

Denis: Yes, we are very proud of Eternal Darkness! We have a strong commitment to quality, and we believe quality is everything!

PN2K: You should be proud of your first Nintendo effort, it's incredible! Well your first effort is just amazing. I played the heck out of Eternal Darkness and just love it. It has a very distinct feel to it! Kind of like Resident Evil...but cooler.

Denis: Yes, we took a very Shakespearian approach to that game. We focused on that game that would have multiple levels. Remember getting stuck in a level in Resident Evil, and it didn't really make sense what you have to do. Eternal Darkness won't have that. What you do will make sense to why you are doing it. Puzzles will make sense. There's enough of a game for the casual, instant gamer, as well something deeper for the heavy gamer.

PN2K: Are you going to always stay with this type of game or could you decide to expand to other Genres, like Sports, or even a Mary Kate an Ashley title?

Denis: No. [laughs] We would never do that. I think we'll probably stick with Action, Adventure, RPG types of games. Those will be our main focus.

PN2K: How's it feel to be an official Second Party Developer for Dolphin?

Denis: We are extremely excited to be working with Nintendo. They made an Equity Investment in our company, so they obviously are interested in us. We feel Nintendo is in a good position to dominate again in this industry.

PN2K: Why did you decide to develop for Nintendo, and on Dolphin, and not DC or PS2?

Denis: Knowledge is power. Nintendo knows how to make great games and great hardware. No other first party really knows how to make great games. Except Nintendo. They have a strong commitment to quality. Two things set Nintendo apart from the rest. They have the best technology, best graphics, and the best sound. It's designed by people that know how to make great games.

PN2K: So we can assume you have Dolphin development kits?

Denis: No comment.

PN2K: Will you have games ready for launch of Dolphin?

Denis: I can't really make a comment on that either, but I can say that we'd like to be there for launch.

PN2K: Are you thinking about developing games for the GBA?

Denis: Not at this time. We want to focus our energies on the main Nintendo consoles.

PN2K: We know you have an important meeting to attend to so, if there's anything you'd like to leave our readers with what would it be?

Denis: We create games that we want to play! It's inspiring to be involved with such a strong group - NST, Miyamoto's group, Rare....it inspires us to make incredible games!

PN2K: Well we are looking forward to play them. Thanks for your time!

Denis: You're welcome!
