Dolphin Online

There is some indication that Nintendo is working on online plans for Dolphin...

The Online capabilities of the Dolphin make me drool just thinking about it. Fragging people in the next version of Perfect Dark, or Playing Wave Race or Mario Kart in an online tournament is a dream that I hope Dolphin will make happen. Well Applied Microsystems is looking for an online whiz for work on getting the Dolphin online.

In another classified ad, Applied Microsystems, the engineers of Dolphin's proverbial development kits have posted an intriguing job ad:

"Seeking candidate to design embedded software components for game middle-ware SDKs, microprocessor emulation and system analysis tools. Candidate will work on Nintendo Dolphin Game development tools.

Requires BSEE/CS degree and 4+ years designing and implementing embedded software and/or data networking applications. A working knowledge of networking protocols and Internet standards is required, including TCP/IP, UDP, http, etc. Knowledge of real-time protocols and applications such as voice over IP is highly desirable. Should have a track record of successful product development, including hardware/software integration."

This seems to highly suggest that Nintendo's base system supports an online environment. The pieces of this puzzle are slowly, but surely, coming together one by one. Further, as Dolphin Cove reported just days ago, Applied Microsystems is working with PowerPlay to to help create open standards that improve the performance of multi-player games on the Internet.

Couple all this with the fact that Retro has registered the online domain www.nintendoonline.com and Nintendo itself is supposed to be working on an online game, and you've got an almost definite online strategy lying at the core of Dolphin. The chances of seeing a numerous amount of online games are very likely. In fact, we can already assume that Retro Studios has at least 2. That being an online FPS and an Online RPG. Does it get better? Knowing Nintendo that answer is most definitely yes.

So, what's next? Well Nintendo is bound to be announcing another partnership sometime soon. With the recent merger of AOL and Time Warner, one can only wonder if Nintendo plans on spending another few billion dollars on it's online plan. After all Nintendo was working with Netscape some time ago, who is temporarily property of AOL. We can hope for the best.
