Sometimes enemies can become friends.

A new Kirby game has been announced for the Nintendo Switch at today's Nintendo Spotlight event.

Footage shown had Kirby absorbing enemies, then having them serve as partners as they helped him clear the battlefield.

The game, just called Kirby at this point in development, is scheduled for release in 2018.

I missed that this was a 2018 game. Too bad. Looks neat.

I know the focus was on 2017, but we got more 2018 games than I thought we would. Maybe even 2019, going by Metroid Prime 4. ;p

Crazy theory time of mine, taken from the NWR Discord.

the other thing I do want to mention here... there's things from this trailer that make me feel like they may be using some of the leftover concepts for Kirby (working title) that didn't make it into return to dreamland from ...

Interesting, I had never seen that trailer before

apparantly between 2004 and 2011there were at least 4 versions of the game that would eventually come to be known as Kirby's Return to Dreamland

the first is the one that you see before you., and is the only one that got publically shown before an Iwata Asks on Return to Dreamland

the other two prototypes for a console Kirby platformer were concepts for a 3D platformer kirby game. the lone screenshot shows sword kirby and an isometric perspective with waddle dees about

the third concept was more of a flat 2D game that used High res sprites. it looks kinda weird, but then again, the public has never seen it in motion because all that is known of those two games outside of HAL are the singular screenshots for each game provided in the Iwata Asks

Return to dreamland would utilize the 4 player co-op, the giant Dedede mech boss, the music used in that trailer, the Water kirby ability (although in Return to dreamland it appears it has different attacks than it's gamecube counterpart) and a couple of hat designs like the new bomb hat design.

Stone's new hat from Return to dreamland also resembles the one used in the canceled game's trailer.

the only ability that wasn't utilized in Kirby's Return to dreamland (counting enemies that in previous games that would give an ability) that was shown in this trailer is the Clean copy ability from Broom Hatter, which hadn't been seen since Kirby's Dreamland 3.

Clean Kirby appears in the trailer for Kirby 2018, along with the return of partners, which is big given that the multiplayer component for Return to dreamland used kirby clones, or the combination of King Dedede, Meta Knight, and bandana Dee with the Spear ability

really, there's only a few ability differences that I spotted between the trailers. the GCN trailer features Plasma Wisp (Spark), a new enemy/partner that appeared to have the tornado ability, Waddle Doo (Beam), and Birdon (Wing)... while this new trailer Features Chilly (Ice), Wester (Whip), and Parasol Waddle Dee (Parasol)... Maybe I'm looking into this too much. Also, have fun reading all this, whoever awakens to my insane kirby ramblings

I've been hearing the same thing from other people, ClexYoshi. It would make some sense, no reason to throw out good ideas from unreleased games!

One of the few disappointments I had with the GameCube was the disappearance of Kirby GC. I was so thrilled to see pictures of the game in Nintendo Power and to get a glimpse of it in action when it was shown E3. I was really looking forward to a grand Kirby epic adventure with GameCube graphics. Something to hopefully rival Kirby Superstar since it showed helper enemies in it reminding me of that game. But then it disappeared.

When Return to Dreamland finally appeared, it seemed that is what Kirby GC had eventually become and that was the end it. It was finally released and Kirby's had other titles released. Yet, when watching the Kirby Switch reveal and seeing him join forces with up to 4 helper enemies and seeing them roll around together, it conjured up some vague memories of that vanished GC game. Glad to see I'm not alone in thinking that. I concur with Clex "Wishywashy" Yoshi's belief that this game potentially consists of elements from the Kirby GC game.

Also, loved the comments by a couple on Discord that said Switch is dead since Nintendo is releasing a Kirby game for it. Another system for console killer Kirby to put down. RIP Switch (2017 - 2018).
