Time to keep an eye on the email box.

Playtonic has revealed the options for backers of Yooka-Laylee who requested a Wii U version before the game was moved to Switch.

The platform choice survey for console backers will be live soon, and Playtonic has confirmed that a Switch version will be available after the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. Backers who initially selected the Wii U version will have the following option:

  • Receive a PC version (plus the ToyBox Deluxe) in exchange - the default option for those who do not make a selection
  • Receive a code for a console version (PlayStation 4, Xbox One or Switch - Switch version to be distributed later)
  • Receive a physical copy of the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions
  • Receive a full refund

Notably, a physical release for the Switch version is not currently planned.

Playtonic not even hinting the possibility of a physical Switch version is unacceptable.

This is really annoying. I don't have a PS4 or an Xbox and my PC can barely manage to run N64 games let alone anything modern. I can't believe they don't even have an idea when the Switch version will be ready. Whatever happened to being such big Nintendo fans that the Nintendo version was being worked on personally? Wii U technical problems my ass.

The reason why they probably don't have a window for when the game is coming out for Switch probably has something to do with Unity implementation. When you work on game engines you sort of have to do what you can. You're not in full control.

Like with the case with Axiom Verge. The game was obviously something Metroid fans or classic game fans would love. That isn't mainly the ps4 audience. The game was on other systems before Wii U because of issues with getting it ported. They had the same problem with Vita, but had to wait on the engine guys.

because Switch is not going to be easy to find, i'm probably going to buy a ps4. I had planned on buying one because a few titles are enticing. I might transfer it to my brother, but he might not appreciate it.

Yeah, something like this could be the reason.

I think they should give a bit of information though, a rough outline of what they are aiming for with the release date would be something, or where they currently are in terms of getting the Switch version going.

We'll probably get an announcement in late march that it is in late April.

Avoiding the risk of KickStarter video games remains by far the best option.

If it's good, and if it actually gets released, then you'll be able to buy it later - probably for less.
If you really want to provide support for small indie developers, then you'd better go in knowing that your support might never net you any returns.

That's a kickstarter risk in general though.

Looks like I will only buy this if all the reviews say its amazing.
Will wait for physical Switch version or for it to go on sale on the eShop

Sure, but video games have a long development time even if everything goes well - and there are lots of factors outside of their control or things that can go wrong.

Other products have risks, but it's rare that the platform required to use them shifts or becomes invalid. With a board game, for example, it can get delayed for a year or two and your table is still a viable platform. You expect that, as long as the product is eventually made, you'll be able to use it.

I think when backing kickstarters you have to be careful. I've only backed 2 and Yooka Laylee is number 2. The other game I got was 7 days  to die. I got the game digitally, but I paid extra to get a map. I never got the map.

It has been another year and I still do not have my Cartographer's map.

With Playtonic at least we know they have successfully delivered 1/3 of my n64 library.
