Great, the frog's loose again.

Inti Creates has announced their newest project, in collaboration with one of the NES's great developers.

At their 20th anniversary festival in Japan, the company announced a collaboration with Sunsoft to create Blaster Master Zero, a refined / enhanced version of the 8-bit classic. The company promises improvements to out-of-tank combat, new areas, enhanced sub weapons and "refined mechanics".

Blaster Master Zero will release worldwide next spring as a 3DS eShop title.

This sounds very promising. Blast Master is a classic, but it's very opaque, and the controls outside the tank leave a lot to be desired.

Interested to see how this will compare to Blaster Master: Overdrive, which released on WiiWare back in 2010.  I skipped that game, but know it didn't review particularly well.

Although I hold the NES title in high esteem, it feels like a series that needs a sequel to improve on original gameplay before reaching it's full potential. Metroid on NES was great at the time, but not something I particularly enjoy going back to; but Super Metroid stands as one of my favorite games ever. Blaster Master feels like it has that same potential...

Most of the negative reviews for Overdrive were from reviewers complaining the game was too hard, which shouldn't be a big issue for actual fans of the original.  I'd say the overall game is easier then the original, but some of the later bosses, especially the final boss turn into bullet hell shooters which are harder then any boss fights in the original so that might turn some off depending on their gaming preferences.

That said I'd still say the original is a better game, but Overdrive is a decent title if you're a fan of this kind of game.

This appears to be some kind of remake so we'll see how much is changing and being added. Overdrive wasn't a bad game, but it was ultimately disappointing so I hope these people do a better job.
