Finally, a chance to tell Nintendo you want voice chat.

For the first time ever, Nintendo will be holding a beta for a game.

Announced in today’s Splatoon Direct, the beta, dubbed Global Testfire, will run May 8 from 11 p.m. ET to 12a.m. ET, and May 9 from 7 a.m. ET to 8 a.m. ET and 3 p.m. ET to 4 p.m. ET. This demo, downloadable from the eShop today, will give early access to the Turf War mode. The beta is on the eShop now and Nintendo will take feedback from beta testers.

The Splatoon-centric Direct also announced the following modes:

  • Tower Control: – One squid will be tasked with holding a tower while the other three defend or try and rush the opponent
  • Retro Mini-Games: An arcade mode with Squid Jump, Squid Racer, Squid Ball and Squid Beats (vertical jumper, racer, platformer and rhythm game), all in 8-bit style. Squid Jump starts, while the others are unlocked by completing challengeswith Amiibo.
  • Challenge modes unlocked with Amiibo: The Girl and Boy Amiibo unlock different weapon challenges, while the Squid Amiibo unlocks harder challenges.

Speaking of Nintendo and voice chat. Audrey Drake was on Splatoon Global Testfire last night and she was on IGN's Nintendo Voice Chat two years ago. She was my favorite on the show. I knew she started working for Nintendo, just not that kind of job. Go Audrey!
