Pokemon #150 will be entering the fray, as well as the protagonist of Mother 3 and a brand new update for Miis!

In today's Nintendo Direct, Satoru Iwata announced that Mewtwo will be coming in April, and Lucas from Mother 3 will be arriving in June as a playable character.

Mewtwo will arrive on April 15 for Club Nintendo members, and April 28 for everyone else. Mewtwo will retail for $3.99 for individual versions, or $4.99 for both. Lucas will be released in June.

In addition, costumes for Miis will be added in another DLC package. Costumes include Smash Bros. t-shirt, cat suit, Link Outfit, and costumes inspired by Mega Man and Xenoblade.

Furthermore, an update coming soon will also include downloadable content, character balancing, and more sharing functionality.

Ummm... Lucas is the PROTAGONIST in Mother 3. :confused;

Ha ha ha. I think the costumes for Amiibo's is another way to get fans off Sakurai's back by sort of having other playable characters that he doesn't want to create.

I love the tagline for Lucas. "Lucas comes out of nowhere." So true. Was hoping there might be 2 more characters to be announced for the future but I guess they'll leave up to the fan ballot. Or maybe they've got them ready and are just hoping the fan ballot confirms that people want them. No new stages announced though.

Finally, Nintendo answers years of fan requests and gives them Mother 3 on Virtual Console Lucas on Smash Bros.

Rejoice guys, we've finally done it!

Also, if you guys don't vote for Ice Climbers I'm quitting the forums.

Meh. Hopefully something good will come out of the ballot.

That reminds me. When Iwata was talking about Lucas in the second video around the 3:35 mark and mentions how he came from Mother 3, a Japanese only release, he then mentioned that he "had heard fans requests and decided to offer" and I thought he was about to say Mother 3 for release on the e-shop but then he said it was to offer Lucas as downloadable content. I thought a surprise Mother 3 announcement was in the works there for a moment.

This announcement really did nothing for me. It's bad enough that we're getting a character we already have a clone OF in Mewtwo, but we're getting an actual clone in Lucas. I don't care about the minor stat bonuses. They're not new characters so I just have to shrug in indifference. Hopefully the Smash poll won't be as depressing predictable as is likely.

WahApril 01, 2015

Hopefully he IS different from Lucario.
Besides Lucario in Smash is pretty bad anyway I use KING DEDEDE and IKE!

Lucas was my main in Brawl.  Glad to have him back.

AdrockApril 02, 2015

I don't think I'll be able to resist getting the Lucina Amiibo. Fine, Nintendo. Take my money.

I never used Lucas, but I'm happy we're getting additional characters. Lucas lacks a set price and date. I hope the vague June release is hinting at an E3 announcement of some kind of bundle or season pass including Lucas.

With Lucas back this also confirms Wolf will be coming back later as well.  If the main character of a niche Japan only game that hasn't had a new installment in almost 10 years is coming back as DLC, then Wolf is as guaranteed as can be.  They'll probably announce him at E3 right after the Star Fox reveal trailer is shown.

While I'd love to have Wolf back, this is hardly a confirmation. I figured the choice to include Lucas was because Mother only has one representative, and Fox already has a "clone."

I have to agree. Plus, there have been a number of indications that Lucas had been planned for a good while, but got cut late in development. If so, much of his programming was likely complete enough to make him easy to re-add. Remember, when Mewtwo was first announced six months ago, Sakurai said he wasn't planning anymore downloadable characters... So, Lucas apparently wasn't being worked on this whole time the way Mewtwo was, he's just being added now because he was largely completed from before getting cut.

With Wolf already being a second clone, he was most likely cut from the start. If he does return, it'll likely be the result of fans voting for him, and he'll be made from scratch... If so, I REALLY hope they use his Starfox 64 design (where he has the eyepatch) and not that horrible one from Assault that they used in Brawl.

Did I miss some announcement about costumes being added through Amiibo figures, or did you just mean "Miis" instead?

KhushrenadaApril 02, 2015

I meant Miis. There was just so much Amiibo talk that I replaced regular Mii's with Amiibos.

If a western release of Mother 3 on the VC isn't announced at e3 along with the Lucas SSB DLC, I doubt it will ever happen.  :-[ :-[

That's a bit over-zealous.
