Nintendo's bringing some Wii classics to Wii U!

Super Mario Galaxy 2, Punch-Out!!, and Metroid Prime Trilogy are all coming to the Wii U eShop. These Wii games will work similar to Virtual Console titles and will launch directly from the Wii U menu. Additionally, Wii games that supported the Classic Controller will be playable by using the Wii U GamePad. Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be available after today’s Nintendo Direct presentation while Punch-Out!! arrives January 22 and Metroid Prime Trilogy releases on January 29. All of the games will be half price for the first week after they release.

The line-up in Japan also contains Super Mario Galaxy 2, which will be released today. Donkey Kong Country Returns is set to arrive on January 21 while Hoshi no Kirby Wii (Kirby's Return to Dream Land) hits on January 28. All of the titles in Japan start at 2,700 yen, but like in North America, are half off for the first week, making them 1,350 yen each.

So...it's not clear. Are they remakes or are they straight VC ports?

I'm glad more people are going to get the chance to play Metroid Prime Trilogy, but I kinda wish I could download the menu option to play the game on Wii U. I already have the disc, I don't want to buy it again just so I can bypass booting up Wii mode.

ShyGuyJanuary 14, 2015

Welp, I will finally get Punch Out

SorenJanuary 14, 2015

NA prices confirmed. $9.99 first week, $19.99 after that.

kokumakerJanuary 14, 2015

SO AWESOME. I've been saying for two years that Wii games should be downloadable on the Wii U VC, and at $10 a pop, I will cheerfully buy every one of them! Now all we need is N64 and GameCube (the latter of which I really thought Nintendo would jump on after adding GameCube controller support to the console)!

ejamerJanuary 14, 2015

So basically Wii Virtual Console? That's pretty awesome.  Not many titles I'll buy because most Wii games I wanted are already owned... but Metroid Prime Trilogy for $10 is hard to resist. Even if it's just to keep my disc from getting used/harmed, that's a pretty solid investment. Extra convenience is an added bonus.

KhushrenadaJanuary 14, 2015

Right now it doesn't matter much to me since I own all the Wii games announced. Frankly, there are very few games that I don't own on Wii that I'm still looking for. The biggest would be Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Other than that, it's some Mario Sports titles, Sonic titles, and Harvest Moon titles.

However, I have really wanted to replay the Metroid Prime games and getting all 3 for $10 is a really, really, great deal.

broodwarsJanuary 14, 2015

No HD emulation ala the Dolphin (& no Gamepad option for games with worthless Wiimote functionality like Galaxy 2) pretty much makes these worthless to me since I already own the physical discs, but it's good that Nintendo's finally putting these up on the eShop for those that missed them.

Evan_BJanuary 14, 2015

Metroid Prime Trilogy? FOR TEN DOLLARS?!

I guess 2015 is going to be the year of "I'm playing the Metroid Prime Trilogy".

If Nintendo decides to do this half-price deal on every Wii game they release, they could be sending my wallet into some dangerous territory. I have a big Wii library already, but all three of these games are titles I currently do not own.

ejamerJanuary 14, 2015

The one thing that kills me about this?  Nintendo's incentive to release Xenoblade this way must be pretty low due to the New 3DS game coming out. That is without doubt the Wii game I'm most like to see offered on Wii U. Offscreen play using the Wii U gamepad for a controller would totally be worthwhile.  Timing doesn't make it seem likely though.

Hopefully it'll happen in the future, after sales slow down for the New 3DS release.  :D

Other games I'd be interested in? Geometry Wars Galaxies. The Last Story. ... Not sure offhand if there is anything else I'd rebuy instead of just play from disc, although seeing Bit.Trip Complete released on Wii U this way would be pretty cool too.

I expect we'll get Xenoblade down the line. It's the same situation as when they didn't release Kirby Super Star on Wii Virtual Console until a while after the DS remake.

azekeJanuary 14, 2015

Gonna get MPT, especially at that price.

marvel_moviefan_2012January 14, 2015

this is so stupid how can anyone be okay with this, they should be releasing N64 or GameCube games, you know  stuff you can't already play on Wii U right now. So you are paying for the privilege to load directly from the menu instead of pupping in a game you already own? So who is this going to appeal to everybody and their ficking grandma owns a Wii. Its not like these games are super rare anyways. I guess it has some appeal but really why does this get priority and not something that you can't already play on Wii U?

This probably takes less work from Nintendo than those things would.

marvel_moviefan_2012January 14, 2015

But it is also lower reward, how many more people would buy Sunshine over Galaxies 2, Sunshine people can't currently play as easily as Galaxies. I don't know I get the feeling whoever is running Nintendo has really lost their mind.

That means I will soon be able to play Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance without paying a ton of money on Ebay, though I would have liked to see Radiant Dawn come out first.

Interestingly, Sin & Punishment 2 and Pandora's Tower were announced for Europe.  Those are niche choices and I applaud NOE for that one.  I'm definitely down for buying S&P again if it comes out in North America.

Bear in mind that Pandora's Tower was published by Nintendo in Europe, but XSEED published it here in NA so that's probably a large reason why it wasn't listed here.  Well, that and it not being an amazing game in general (and before you get all up in arms, I like the game. ****, I bought it twice. But it isn't a marquee title that will bring people to the eShop).

Luigi DudeJanuary 14, 2015

NOA just drags their feet so Sin & Punishment and Pandora's Tower will eventually be released here, we'll just have to wait several months or even a year before it happens.  Pandora's Tower could take even longer since it has a nasty game breaking glitch near the end in the North American version.  That'll need to be fixed and I doubt NOA at the moment is all that concerned about debugging a niche title like it.

I seriously doubt the contract between Nintendo and XSEED to publish Pandora's Tower didn't include language that would allow something like this. Nintendo has flaws, but legal wrangling generally isn't among them.

SorenJanuary 15, 2015

Pandora's Tower isn't that good anyway. And since these are straight ports the game breaking bug will still be there.

K-S-OJanuary 15, 2015

Hey, I like Pandora's Tower.  I think it is great.

Also, I thought FE: Path of Radiance was the Wii game but it was actually Radiant Dawn.  My bad.  Either way, I'm sure the FE game will come out.

Nintendo and third parties have gone and altered things in Virtual Console games before.  Fixing a bug that was non-existent in the Japanese and European version of the game isn't that out there to do and most likely will happen.

They'd probably just put up the European version instead and be done with it. Not like they haven't done that before.

Will the save files work from the disc version?  Has anyone tested this?

I haven't tried personally, but it has been tested and confirmed.

For the record, Sin and Punishment and Pandora's Tower are on the Japanese release list as well. Also, the Nintendo published Zangeki no Reginleiv. It's an action game that came out in Japan only back in February 2010. I've never played it (and for me, I never owned Galaxy 2, so the digital release was PERFECT for me!), so for a little over $10, I'm in.
