Hyrule Warriors Almost Featured Playable Tingle

The silly little elf almost got his time in the spotlight.... Almost.

Tingle, the odd little elf who has appeared in a number of Zelda games, was considered for inclusion in Hyrule Warriors as a playable character.

"Actually, Tingle was a character we kind of considered and sort of went back and forth on," Koei Tecmo producer Yosuke Hayashi explained. "We really wanted to include him but Mr. Aonuma suggested that it might be good to include some other character."

Do you think it was a wise choice not to include Tingle? Would you like to see him have a role in the upcoming Zelda game for Wii U?

Absolutely not, I don't get the Tingle obsession the guy is worthless and I hope he is not in the next Zelda game or any other games ever again for that matter.

xcwarriorJanuary 05, 2015

With this news, Aonuma surpassed Miyamoto as the greatest video game designer of all time.

Amen man, can't be spoken any better.

SorenJanuary 05, 2015

Sakurai gets it. Aonuma doesn't.

Real hardcore Zelda fans love Tingle. End of story.

The kind of Zelda fanservice-fest that Hyrule Warriors was really should have had him in it. I don't mind if they don't put him in the more serious mainline games, but he was a perfect fit for this game.

MagicCow64January 05, 2015

Yeah, Christ, I am pretty borderline on ever trying this game, but Tingle might have swayed me. I was also sad he wasn't in Skyward Sword, as I wanted proto-Tingle to be part of the creation myth of the series. I mean, he has his own spin-off game as a playable character! Can't say that about stupid insect girl from Twilight Princess.

I had no beef with Tingle in Majora's Mask.  I wouldn't say I liked the character but he just seemed to fit in fine with rest of the characters in the game.  But I never expected him to show up again in any other game.  Nintendo treated him like some breakout character but it would have made as much sense to make the Deku King or the baby Goron or any mook from MM into a recurring character.  Tingle didn't stand out, he was just there and his prominent role in Wind Waker seemed quite random.  I don't like him because he feels very much like an bit character arbitrarily given a fairly prominent role that no one was asking for.  He's the Scrappy Doo of Zelda.

But I would have included him in Hyrule Warriors.  The game is full of references to the series and he shows up in enough games that I would expect to see him.

EnnerJanuary 05, 2015

This means Skull Kid and Fierce Deity Link are a lock for the Majora's Mask content for Hyrule Warriors!

motangJanuary 05, 2015

Well they could have put him in!

That is my thought on it.

Tingle would have worked as a guide or UI narrator. Something along those lines. As a playable character, I'm going to side with Aonuma.

The weird thing with this is Nintendo saw fit to make not one, but two games entirely about his character. That's two more than they've made F-Zero or Star Fox games in that time span. What caused the change of heart?

kokumakerJanuary 05, 2015

I can barely stand Tingle. He's annoying as hell. But most other Zelda fans adore him for some inexplicable reason, so really, it would've made sense to include him in Hyrule Warriors. I'm surprised that they decided again him. I was still fully expecting him to show up in some future DLC (most likely the Majora's Mask Pack).

StratosJanuary 05, 2015

I half suspected Tingle was a creepier Tom Bombadil who was secretly a creator of the universe or some other powerful being. His magic words just begged to be some key to a killer spell... "KALOO-LIMPAH!"

He's the Scrappy Doo of Zelda.

This comparison hits the nail on the head.

StrawHousePigJanuary 06, 2015

Bite your tongues, heathens!  :-X

Tingle, with your middle-aged gut, cosplay fetishism, gin blossomed countenance, and... flamboyant gesticulations, you are without a doubt the funniest MF in the Zelda universe. Please keep making the non-believers as uncomfortable as you can. Kooloo-Limpah!

To compare the mighty Tingle with the likes of Scrappy Doo is like comparing Santa Claus to Annoying Orange. g_f

I would trade Lana for Tingle. Bad playing, annoying blue-haired cliche  for the rosy cheeked merchant prince of the fairies? Yes.

Three Tingle games.  Learn to Triforce.

Now that we know Tingle's not in the game, I may need to move this up my GOTY list. That's a bit of silver-medal winning news.

Should have been playable in this and SMASH!

PhilPhillip Stortzum, January 06, 2015

I'd love to see a sequel to Hyrule Warriors with A Link to the Past, A Link Between Worlds, and other games in the series featured prominently.

I'm not sure what world you're living in since Sakurai didn't make Tingle playable in SSB either-- clearly, they BOTH get it. He may be beloved by some, but Tingle is absolutely despised by North American Zelda fans which are probably at least 65% of the fan base. They know they'd be needlessly alienating a lot more than they'd be appeasing, so they made the right choice.

PhilPhillip Stortzum, January 06, 2015

I think Soren meant that Tingle was actually in Smash while he wasn't in HW at all.

SorenJanuary 06, 2015

I'm saying had Sakurai been directing Hyrule Warriors he would have made Tingle playable and given him a badass move set because why the hell not? This is a spinoff game meant to pile on as much fan service as possible. I'm almost certain 154% of the fanbase agrees with me.

steveyJanuary 07, 2015

Malon >>> Tingle

They've wasted so much potential

If Sakurai didn't make him playable in SSB, I don't know why you'd assume he'd make him playable in HW. And yes, HW was meant to pile on as much fan service as possible... to ZELDA fans. With at least 65% of Zelda fans despising Tingle, including him would be a DISservice to them. There's a reason Nintendo stopped putting him in Zelda games and gave him his own stand-alone franchise instead-- he's too divisive to Zelda fans in general, and Nintendo recognizes it. He's never going to appear in a new Zelda game again (unless it's something minor like the Tingle doll in Skyward Sword), you'd better learn to accept that.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorJanuary 11, 2015

65% of Zelda fans not real fans confirmed.

StratosJanuary 11, 2015

I think he was a clever and quirky character. Never hated the guy, thought he was endearing in a "my special-needs friend" kind of way. He pours himself wholeheartedly into what he does and hold no regrets. Ganondorf could learn a thing or two from him.

nickmitchJanuary 11, 2015

Almost doesn't cut it.

Do better next time, Nintendo.

4/10

Welp, can't argue with you there. I mean, you did use the exact same number twice in the thread. I guess it's official then.
