Smash Bros. figurines only scratch at the surface of what Nintendo has planned for amiibo.

Amiibo, Nintendo's upcoming NFC platform, will extend far beyond figures. According to Nintendo EAD General Manager Shigeru Miyamoto, support for cards and cheaper toys is in the works as well.

"When Amiibo become cards, we can create a game which can be played only by passing several cards over the NFC reader/writer, and the results will be stored in the Amiibo card," he said during a Q&A with investors. "I cannot discuss any of the details today, but Amiibo has the potential to propose new ways to play card games."

Miyamoto also noted that support for other franchises will open up new possibilities as the Amiibo platform broadens, specifically mentioning Animal Crossing as a likely candidate. "By using Amiibo in different forms, we are internally discussing the possibility of using Amiibo with, for example, an Animal Crossing game and other games in some unique ways."

What direction would you like to see Nintendo take Amiibo? Which franchises do you think would be best suited for an NFC-centric experience? Comment below and let us know.

Fuck off Amiibo.

Not happy about this. It sounds like e-reader 2.0 .

If they did this with Pokemon Card Game.  And allowed you to buy the physical cards and play them online in a digital game that could be cool.

But yes it does sound like E-Reader 2.0, which wasn't that cool.

Whenever I see these things all I see is overpriced memory cards. Maybe I'm too old to for this to appeal to me but it seems like if you're gonna make a toy that connects to a video game system. That toy needs to be functional in some way. Thinking back to NES and other systems, the light gun for example had a function. Even the E-reader had a function by scanning a bunch of cards it loaded an NES game.

If nintendo wants to sell me on a toy that works with my game system, they need to sell me an actual toy. To me a figurine with a memory card in it doesn't count

I don't care for cards or for cheaper toys. I just want my damn normal figure just so I can have a Zelda figure among others.

God, I hope this whole thing fails.  I'm not interested in buying useless junk to play videogames.  The world would have been so much better off if Skylanders failed miserably.  The thing is this is easy money if it works and Nintendo will dive in head first into shoehorning this garbage into any game they can.

I realize that Nintendo and I are so far apart now in values that I find I'm rooting for like 75% of their endeavours to fail.  It's like everything will go back on track once Amiibo, the Wii U, gimmicky control schemes and focusing on casual users all lose Nintendo a lot of money and they have to change or die.  Of course I've been openly rooting for microtransactions, always-online, free-to-play, and mobile games in general to fail miserably as well so there are a lot of current trends in the industry as a whole that I'm against.  The videogame industry is changing, in my mind for the worst as most of it seems very unfriendly to consumers, and it's frustrating because it feels like it can't be stopped.  For every sane person that refuses to participate there are five drooling idiots happy to part with their money.

The future - you never own the game, you get charged separately for every little feature, the game is of the absolute bare minimum quality it needs to be to make a profit and it's on a platform that is so limited in control options that making a great game is near impossible anyway.

When you were a kid did you think "boy I wish features in Super Mario Bros. 3 were hidden unless I bought a toy to unlock them"?  No of course not so why would you embrace such an obvious scam now?
