Nintendo's Quarterly Financials Reveal Encouraging Increase in Wii U Sales

The Big N's tablet-centric console is selling better, but will it be enough?

Nintendo has released its financial results for Q2 of its fiscal year, announcing that it sold 610,000 Wii U consoles during the period spanning July to September.

While this is figure is not nearly enough to propel Wii U sales high enough to reach its 3.6 million target by year's end, it is nearly double what the company sold during the same timeframe last year. Nintendo attributes the jump in sales to the release of Hyrule Warriors and the continued success of Mario Kart 8.

On the handheld front, however, the company wasn't quite as successful, with just 1.27 million console sales for 3DS. Compared to last year's 2.49 million figure, that's undoubtedly a bit disappointing, especially when considering the recent release of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS.

Overall, when looking back over the past six months, the Big N earned ¥171.4 billion ($1.6 billion) in profit, which translates to an operating loss of ¥215 million. However, thanks to the exchange rate, the company is enjoying a net profit of ¥14.3 billion ($131.5 million).

Smash wasn't released outside of Japan in the time frame though, it came out in October. So I think the 3DS will get a big sales boost for October.
