Hyrule Warriors Offers Classic Costumes as Pre-Order Bonus

Even Nintendo isn't safe from pre-order incentives.

Hyrule Warriors will have special costumes if you pre-order the game from select retailers.

At the end of tonight's Nintendo Direct for Hyrule Warriors, Nintendo revealed various costumes for Link and Zelda, only accessible through pre-ordering the game. The costumes are taken from various 3D Zelda titles, including Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword. Those who register the game on Club Nintendo will also be getting alternate costumes for Ganondorf, inspired by his outfits in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess.

It is unknown which retailers will be participating in the pre-order bonuses, nor if Nintendo will be selling these costumes seperately on the eShop, but we will keep you updated when we receive more information

It's like Nintendo is begging me to not buy this game. Retail exclusive DLC? Great job Nintendo.

Retail exclusive DLC... we didn't want/ask/demand this Nintendo. Why are you going down this dark path?

I want to blame Gamestop, EA, Activision, Ubisoft and Square Enix... possibly in that order.

Wait - is this a case of GameStop getting, say, OoT costumes while Amazon gets Twilight Princess costumes?

If that's the case - boo-urns.

If this is a case of "Pre-order at any participating retailer and get all this" - I'm fine with that.  Nintendo's been doing that for years.

I find it somewhat hard to believe Nintendo would do this in such a way to give real disincentive for people to buy the game in the way that makes them the most money, namely the eShop.

NeoStar9XAugust 05, 2014

Thing is that they're just costumes. No real impact on the gameplay. Also it's not like they wouldn't be available later on on the eShop. Even for a small fee. Hell they might even be unlockable in the game.

The Ganon costumes from club Nintendo were the best ones.

jimwood27August 05, 2014

These costumes are all paid DLC in Japan so you will get one for free depending on where you pre-order and you can buy the others on the eShop if you so choose. Sounds like a positive to me. And they are just costumes.

And why would this be Nintendo's fault? Don't Tecmo Koei do this for other Warriors games?

... this isn't new to Nintendo. They've been doing this with pokemon since forever. But yes game freak isn't technicaly 1st party. But 2nd Nintendo still has a say. And knowing how Nintendo is still trying to push the eshop, the DLC will be available from there after about 2-3 months after release for about $1-2 dollars each. Except maybe the club exclusive. So stop whining about it. Nintendo has never actively tried to keep game content from the players.

Same old story. As long as the costumes end up available to everyone in the end, I don't care about retailer pre-order bonuses.

OoT designs are my favorite, though I wish they had ones for Link's Awakening (the designs seen in the artwork and hell, Zelda can dress up like Marin).

I hope it doesn't turn into this: http://www.gamebreaker.tv/games/watch-dogs/it-will-cost-you-1240-if-you-want-to-get-everything-in-the-watch-dogs-special-editions/

Saying you get a figurine for preordering somewhere vs getting part of the game for preordering the game are totally different.

Nintendo needs people to realize there are Nintendo games/systems being sold. They need them to go to the store and see Zelda. Making incentives for the eshop only helps people who already own WiiU. They need new people to buy WiiU.

As for you 2, you need to criticize Nintendo when it's warranted. They are going to keep pushing the button harder on DLC to see if their fans balk. If you guys keep hoo-huming and justifying it, we'll all be paying $5 for hidden dungeons that used to be in a game within a year or two.

Dressing up in pretty outfits is part of a fighting game now?

Regardless, Nintendo has done this with actual game content as well.  There's been a couple of Pokemon games that came with bonus Pokemon.  Mario Golf on the GameCube had a special "Target Tournament" for copies bought at Target/Launch.  Mario Kart:Double Dash came with a bunch of cool bonus content if you pre-ordered.  Same with Pokemon Colleseum and one of the Star Wars games.  Oh, and OoT/Master Quest for Wind Waker pre-orders.

ism't it impossible to get the very last Pokemon in the original unless you like got a special cart from Nintendo when it was new or went to some special event or something like that?

PhilPhillip Stortzum, August 05, 2014

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this will be a "Buy game at Best Buy? Get OoT stuff! Then you can pay for the TP and SS costumes on the eShop!" type thing. I wouldn't overreact yet, for those on all places on the net doing so.
