Place your bets!

A new challenger for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games for Wii U and 3DS will be revealed on Monday, July 14, via a live stream on the games' official website. Director Masahiro Sakurai announced on Miiverse that the unveiling will begin at 7 a.m PT. The stream, as seen below, is currently displaying a countdown to the announcement.

Talkback

I think either Lloyd Irving or Shulk.

Triforce HermitJuly 12, 2014

Shulk hopefully. God I hope its Shulk. That would be my favorite new character reveal (not saying much because all of the new characters are horrible so far.)

AdrockJuly 12, 2014

Bayonetta. Or KOS-MOS.

Hopefully, Goku.

RAY!

if I could post screencaps properly in a talkback thread, I would post what I posted to Miiverse last night.

According to the Gematsu leak ( http://gematsu.com/2014/04/rumor-shulk-palutena-set-super-smash-bros ) It is most likely to be Shulk, Chrom, or the Chorus Men from Rhythm Heaven for DS. If the Gematsu leak is to be believed ( which they have successfully predicted every newcomer besides Rosalina. This is why I'm even bothering to stand on such a shaky platform for my educated guess ) if one wanted to keep the cross-promotional candle burning steady in the month lingering after E3, they would most likely reveal the heir to the Monado. the fact that Xenoblade Chronicles X is coming is still fresh in people's minds from E3, and I think a lot more interest would bubble up from Shulk's appearance, considering how Fire Emblem appeared from the Aether (See what I did there?) thanks to Melee.

if I had to take a random guess at a newcomer of some sort that isn't from the Gematsu link, and disregarding Sakurai's statement that roster was the very first thing they nailed down... how about an Inkling? They gave Splatoon the second biggest push at their booth like it'll be their next really big game! I get the feeling from the impressions I heard and such that Nintendo has a lot of faith in Splatoon, and once again, the Smash Bros. Effect has that means of greatly boosting interest in an IP!

Luigi DudeJuly 12, 2014

Right now Shulk is the odds on favorite to be shown out of the three characters left in the leak.  Since Ike was shown just two months ago it seems too early for another Fire Emblem character like Chrom, and the Chorus Men seem more like the weird Game & Watch/ROB character Sakurai might want to wait until the Japanese release in September since Rhythm Heaven series is by far more popular in Japan.

I thought I was the only one who wanted KOS-MOS. sadly Pac-Man shot down any chance she had. I bet on Shulk though for Monday's Character Reveal

AdrockJuly 12, 2014

I don't think Pac-Man was the deciding factor or anything. He really is the best and most obvious choice as far as Namco characters go. I was never really clear on how much, if any, of Xenosaga's rights were held by Monolith Soft (Bandai Namco released some Xenosaga figure sets after the sale, but the games have yet to be re-released digitally or as an HD bundle) so depending on who owns what, KOS-MOS could be a first party character on a weird technicality. I always figured her chances begin and end with Monolith Soft regardless of who actually owns the rights to Xenosaga and even then, I never thought she was a realistic choice, just a cool one. It would have been nice to honor (arguably) Tetsua Takeshi's most popular creation, but Shulk is just a better choice at this point. Xenoblade is more relevant and 100% owned by Nintendo.

As for serious predictions for this upcoming announcement, I can't really argue with Shulk, but I'm still going with Bayonetta. Ride that hype train all the way to October.

To update my own statement, I just heard about http://puu.sh/a8QnL/40e510d5b5.png, which really pushes things into the Shulk/KOS MOS territory. That being said, The reason I'd be incredibly Shakey on KOS MOS is that she's never appeared in her own game on a Nintendo Platform. Yes, she was in Super Robot Wars OG and in Project X Zone, but she's a very small part of both of those games, and Xenosaga was not released on the Gamecube to my knowledge.

I'm still stickin' with Shulk. it makes too much sense and is the obvious pick. that being said, if it's Reyn I will mane that bastard because his Up B will be "Bone Upper"

That has to be a joke comment. Almost all of the new characters have gotten lots of praise, and a few are already getting good amounts of people planning to main them. Mega Man is hugely popular among Smash fans, Villager is a surprise hit among Smash fans and many at E3 said they had a lot of fun playing as him. Little Mas is by far an early favorite and many people think he could be a "Tier 1" character since his attacks are so powerful (his only downside being his aerial sucks)

This appears to have not gotten a release outside of Japan. That would probably explain why I hadn't heard of it. Still, thank you for bringing this to my attention. I'm still not going to shy away from the Reyn Shulk prediction.

I'll concede that Megaman and Villager will be popular, but that doesn't mean I like it. Palutena is the only good addition so far. The rest are terrible (Mii Fighters? Wii Fit Trainer?) and, to me, gives us a dull roster when there are far better choices out there.

Who are these "far better" choices? I think just about every newcomer so far has been interesting, and while I don't think I'd have ever come up with someone like Wii Fit Trainer I think she's a fantastically ridiculous addition.

I'm pretty happy with all the newcomers (particularly Wii Fit Trainer), but there are certainly a couple missed opportunities. While I wouldn't call them "far better choices" or even "better," I was disappointed that both Midna and Dark Samus were relegated to Assist Trophies. If Ridley ends up being a mere stage hazard, I'd include him in that group. Still, if Little Mac is anything to go by, maybe they can be upgraded to the main roster in a sequel.

Better choices:

-Waluigi
-Cranky Kong or K.Rool
-Issac (Golden Sun)
-Midna, she is popular enough (cancel out Toon Link, hate how there is two characters with the same moveset)
-Any Warioware character, there is enough variety.
-Hoenn Starter Pokemon
(Which reminds me, I forgot about Greninja. He was also a good addition along with Palutena. One of the decisions with the character roster)
-Terra (FFVI. We got Capcom to allow Megaman, anything is possible)

Nile Boogie ReturnsJuly 13, 2014

Setting the odds:

Wonder Red      150:1 (or Viewtiful joe, but the world is not yet ready for the blossom )
Shulk                8:5
Goku                10000(5x10):mass of jupiter
Bayonetta          15:1 (I think ZERO SUIT SAMUS HAS A RESKIN for Bayonetta/wonder  pink)
BomberMan      30:1
Zero                  30:1
GROOSE            Too cool for smash
Ghirihiam          20:1
EBA                  12:1 (although they would be so awesome)

Waluigi? While I don't like to hate on anyone's preferences for characters, compared to the newcomers we have now Waluigi is just ugh. What does he bring to the table? Mario sports/spin off material? He was never a leading man and that's why he only appears in spin offs. Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man, Little Mac and everyone else revealed so far deserves to be in Smash so much more than that guy. Those characters have made much more of an impact than he ever will.

Let's say the Gematsu leak is all that is left plus Brawl vets. Even if we got no Mewtwo, Dixie, K Rool or Ridley(*tears up*) the total newcomers are very very good and bring so many new play styles to the table.

Oh and Monday is going to be Shulk I'm pretty sure. With the monolith soft guy retweeting the news I am certain it's going to be Shulk.

I would say because Wii Fit made a huge impact for Nintendo and the gaming world at large. During the years of Brawl development Sakurai didn't look towards non-violent characters for playable status. That goes for Nintendogs, Animal Crossing and Wii Fit undoubtedly despite never mentioning it. At the time Sakurai couldn't even invision how Pac Man would work as a playable character even after Miyamoto's request.

Times change and Sakurai must have come to a different conclusion as to what constitutes for a good playable character. When discussing Olimar he mentioned how there were very few games made that were character driven that made an impact. Now though it seems like any Nintendo property that has made an impact deserves some playable recognition. Of course there are some exceptions like the Ice Climbers. Wii Fit Trainer fits that and more wouldn't you say? Not to mention the shock value of it all was pretty awesome.

As much as I hate to admit it, Isaac, Saki, Ashly, Dillion, Samurai Goroh and many more won't be getting any playable status anytime soon without the actual series coming back in semi big way.

Ridley is not one of these characters and needs to be playable! He starred in 2 games last gen, got a big guest starring role in Smash Bros it's self and even came out in one of the games commercials! I want my pterodactyl xenomorph! Just give him Charizard's wings and tail, Donkey Kong's arms, Bowser's hunched posture and float mechanic like Peach just less abusable.

Then, you're clearly not trying. Wii Fit Trainer is one of Nintendo's most recognizable characters from one of their most popular IPs. Her inclusion is exactly the kind of outside-the-box thinking that's so integral to Super Smash Bros., a fighting game that subverted the entire genre. The series is a celebration of Nintendo's entire history; Wii Fit Trainer, like her or not, is part of that history and a pretty important part at that.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

THIIIIIIS! More than anything else that any of us could define Super Smash Bros. as, the one niche the series fits perfectly is that it is the CELEBRATION of a company that at some point in our lives has brought us a very powerful joy in one way or another. There is somebody out there in the aether who played a bunch of Sheriff in the arcade or Game & Watch on the train to work. There is somebody out there that played a whole bunch of Mach Rider when they were a little kid. There's somebody out there that remembers the Super Scope so fondly that they make videos of themselves shooting at possessed demon cartridges of Super Mario Bros. 3 with it.

Y'know what? there also happens to have been a lot of people who came home from work every day, got in front of the tv, and performed Yoga poses that were instructed to them by a featureless Mannequin. Super Smash Bros. is the celebration of Nintendo's tenure as a video game developer, and Wii Fit Trainer being front and center is the most elegant way that Masahiro Sakurai had to tell us this. By using this character nobody would have expected and this character that probably would have focus group tested, He has successfully brought something we wouldn't have tried otherwise to the table. More importantly, he is a successful internet troll if you're still butthurt over the decision.

Bman87301July 13, 2014

It's going to be Shulk or Chorus Men. Despite the accuracy of Gematsu leak up to this point, I'm still willing to bet decent money that Chrom is NOT going to be in the game. I'm sure he was planned at one time, but since the leak was well over a year ago, it's reasonable to assume of the initial plans have changed and Chrom was dropped for Ike (Adding new FE characters to the SSB roster is tricky since most only appear in a single game, then lose relevance. Marth and Ike have appeared in multiple games, so they'll always have relevance).

And yet somehow the RPGs of the SNES era, which are tremendously popular and influential on the entire gaming industry, have no representation aside from Fire Emblem and Earthbound. You want to try prove to me that is a celebration of Nintendo's success, then get any character from one of those RPGs that Nintendo owes a lot to. Even as an assist trophy would be fine.

There are a lot better choices of influential characters to choose from. I still think it is a poor choice.

RPG's from Nintendo or 3rd party? Aside from Snake, Sonic, Mega and Pac Man were pretty heavily requested characters. There are people who want Chrono and god knows what else Square and/or Enix made in the day but like Sakurai said, he won't just ad any company's character into Smash Bros. And if anyone got in from them the big RPG makers it would be something like Slime/Chocobo/Dark Mage and those guys are now from the same company. While

Nintendo owes a lot of it's past success to games like that, though what characters among them is an icon? Granted not every Nintendo character is an honest to goodness gaming icon but it's pretty obvious if it's 3rd party they darn well better be.

@Bman. Prepare for Chrom. I don't care about him too much but chances are he is making it in. I mean his Fire Emblem game really hit home with critics and fans, he is joining up. Ike had a completely unique play style with plenty of assets to use in this game. There was no way Ike wasn't returning.

My brother who is normally completely rational would often tell me "Chrom will not be playable because everyone knows a Smash Bros game has only 2 Fire Emblem reps, Marth and the new guy. That's the pattern and since Ike is in it's settled. Not to mention he isn't relevant anymore." At that point I proceeded to tell him how stupid he was. There are no patterns, especially with only 2 entries.

Relevance is another somewhat silly issue honestly. Jigglypuff, G&W, ROB, and Pit all say hi. If they were important enough at some point in time chances are they will be added into Smash and for guys like Jiggly it seems like they will keep being added.

Spak-SpangJuly 13, 2014

Although, it will probably be one of the characters in the Leak...and I am betting it will be a pretty big reveal of a popular character...so that makes me guess Shulk.

I really, really, want Bomberman.  I think he would be a great character.

Have his specials be different bomb attacks.  His regular attacks can be punches and kicks, but they are very weak.  However, his bomb attacks would be very powerful.

Specials.  Regular Special.  Lay Bomb.
Forward Special Punch Bomb and also a powerful smashing attack...very little damage though.
Down B: Detonator Bomb  Do it again to blast.

Bombs can be strung across and detonated for a combo blast.

Up B.  Bomberman  drops a bomb that immediately blasts sending him flying.

Valid point up until Wii Fit Trainer. I still don't understand the thought process behind that and never will.

Mog
Recurring character in the Final Fantasy series. In FFVI, he is the dragoon, one of the most popular classes in the series. Maybe not heavily requested, but still iconic to the FF series.

Caterkiller already touched on this. Fire Emblem and Earthbound are Nintendo IPs. The third party characters that have been included are those respective companies' most recognizable characters (despite how much Capcom wants to pretend Mega Man doesn't exist these days) along with the stipulation that they had to appear on a Nintendo platform. Snake makes sense for Konami despite questionable albeit acceptable credentials on Nintendo hardware, but he was included mostly as a favor to Hideo Kojima.

As for influential, you bring up characters like Waluigi and Isaac yet you can't grasp the validity of Miis and Wii Fit Trainer? Super Smash Bros. is a celebration of Nintendo's history (not necessarily success). Just because you don't like certain characters doesn't change their place in Nintendo's past.

Waluigi would be good but alas, he's a assit trophy.

Wii Fit Trainer is a ludicrous choice, but that's what Smash Bros. is all about. The series revels in its ridiculousness, its insane spectacle. That's the whole point.

Magnus! :P:

If another Kid Icarus character makes it, I'd rather it be Medusa. Another villain, another female, and her redesign was awesome.

Spak-SpangJuly 13, 2014

They seem to be hyping this one quite a bit.  I feel building a count down and everything...I hope it is a big surprising reveal...otherwise it might feel like a let down.

nickmitchJuly 13, 2014

I really hope Sakurai, being the master troll that he is, reveals another left field character. Like Sukapon or something.

AdrockJuly 13, 2014

I'd prefer if it's a character out of left field. I think Shulk makes it onto the roster, but for an announced character reveal, he just seems too obvious. Most people are already betting on Shulk. Where's the fun in that? The best reveals are the ones you don't see coming. Mega Man's debut trailer was awesome because it was unexpected. More of that please. Thanks! "Oh, you think it's Shulk? Here's not Shulk at all!"

Ganondorf with his own moveset would be swell. A completely original moveset would make the character new, but it's still trollish since he's a Super Smash Bros. veteran. I'm still sticking with Bayonetta.

Didn't magnus also land an assist trophy?

And that, as they say, is that. Never said that the Wii Fit Trainer wasn't a big part of Nintendo, I just said I thought there were better choices.

I'm just saying, I'd much rather have crazy off-the-wall choices like Wii Fit Trainer than another dude with a sword.

You said you didn't understand their thought process. That is their thought process. I'd argue that Wii Fit Trainer and Miis hold a far greater place in Nintendo's history than the characters you listed, but if this is essentially boiling down to subjectivity, we're done here.

Agreed. This is also partially why I'd rather see Medusa than Magnus.

Man, I'm a pretty big Nintendo Fanboy, but I just don't get into the hate on Rayman like some folks do.  He gets a total "'meh" from me at best - but my blood doesn't boil at the thought of him being included in the game as a trophy.

Oh noes, Ubisoft was going to make a game exclusive, then they didn't.  Whoop-dee-freakin'-doo.

I mean, if you want to talk Nintendo-betrayals, Capcom 5.  And yet, all the other fanboys are wetting themselves over Mega Man in Smash Bros.

nickmitchJuly 14, 2014

Rayman Legends is also really good.

No matter what Ubisoft may have done, Rayman still makes more sense than Snake ever did.

Aw, Roy. Aw.

Luigi DudeJuly 14, 2014

-says one new character will be shown on Monday
-everyone thinks Shulk will be shown
-shows Rayman trophy hours before event

Event happens

-reveals 3 new Fire Emblem characters

Sakurai proving once again why he's the king of trolls.  Hell I wouldn't be surprised if he was the source being the leak in the first place just so we think we know who might be revealed only for him to pull something like this.

WahJuly 15, 2014

2 New fire enblem chracters, derpa derp. Chrom isn't playable, Captain falcon is from F-ZERO!!

Hey! The revelation the Lucina is a Marth clone gives more hope that Roy will be back. Either than or Lucina will play like Roy did.
