Newly revealed details include the tournament character roster and the addition of a secondary Fan Favorite bracket.

Nintendo has finally announced significant details for the E3 Super Smash Bros. Invitational tournament, including the roster of challengers, rules, and more.

A limited selection of only twenty characters will be available for the challengers to pick from. The sixteen tournament participants will draw numbers from a hat to determine the order in which they will choose their fighters, with each character having only one representative player. They will be locked in to play as that same fighter throughout the entirety of the tournament.

The main bracket will follow a single-elimination format, with four-player, four-stock matches played on a five minute time limit. The top two players for each match will advance to the next round. Second place ties can be broken by looking at who has the most kills. If that’s a tie as well, a fan vote will be the determining factor. For the main bracket Quarterfinals, Items will be set to Medium, and they’ll drop the setting down to Low for the Semifinals and Finals.

The Grand Finals will have a setup inspired by the competitive Smash Bros. community, featuring an eight minute long, four-stock one-on-one match with Items turned off, set on the Battlefield stage.

There is also going to be a secondary Fan Favorite bracket, which will be voted on by fans in attendance at the event. Votes will take place after each Quarterfinal and Semifinal match of the main bracket and are supposed to be based on who the audience feels “performed with the most heart, courage, creativity, and style.”

The Fan Favorite bracket will be single-elimination as well, with up to four players per match and a five minute time limit. Two players from each match will advance, one determined by the number of kills and the other by fan vote. Items will be set to medium on all rounds. The Grand Finals of this bracket will be determined strictly by score.

The event will be hosted by Geoff Keighley, with commentators Wynton "Prog" Smith, Bobby "Scar" Scarnewman, and D'Ron "D1" Maingrette calling the action.

The roster of participants is as follows:

  • Lilian "milktea" Chen
  • Hugo "HugS" Gonzalez

I know "Hugs"from the Smash Brothers docu on youtube! There's also a "Chen" in that documentary series, but i'm not sure if it's the same person as Lilian Chen. Maybe it's his sister.
if you haven't seen the series, go check it out. it's realy cool.

"The event will be hosted by Geoff Keighley"

I'm out.

Are they not revealing the full roster by then?  Also interesting that Ike didn't make it.

KhushrenadaMay 29, 2014

I'm sure my invitation is just being held up by slow Postal delivery service.....

Yeah - this makes me fear the licensing that Nintendo was talking about...

Radioactive orange Doritos dust everywhere.

Knowing nothing about these competitors I'm going to go ahead and root for the guy named "Hugs". Also, everyone will pick Fox.

Yeah, besides Hugs, Ken is coming out of retirement and looking to be in the same round as Korean DJ! :D thanks Smash Bros. documentary!

I kinda winced as well when I saw that Dorito pope was going to MC the event.  I'll probably end up watching VGX awards from last year again to watch ol' Geoff try to desperatley hold that show together.

Guys, His Holiness has been confirmed for weeks.

I can't even freaking move properly in Smash, let alone play it, but i still sure i know more about Smash than Doritos Pope.
Maybe they didn't want to confuse new viewers with "nairs", "fair" and "techs" that usual commenters on Smash streams constantly use.
It's cool that they added a few girls and didn't turned it into complete sausage fest.

Geoff is the host but he won't be commentating on the actual matches. Unless Nintendo says otherwise expect the 2 really good Smash Bros commentators to use terms like DI, NAIR etc. Nintendo really chose the right people I'm amazed.

M2K(Mewtwo King) is not here as expected because he is socially awkward weirdo who can't control himself. Yeah he has Aspergers but it's not even about that. He's a self entitled jerk and a wild card. With this being held by Nintendo they don't want any of his nonsense.

There are 20 selectable characters and 16 combatants. Each person has to use a different character. There will be no Fox onlys, hahaha.

I'm going to be there at the actual event, any other NWR folks going? Let's meet up! And for real this time...

From what i seen on latest videos (yes, i know i said i am horrible at Smash and know very little but i DO want to get better so i watch some videos here and there), he got a lot better with that.

Just yesterday i watched a video with M2K and Ally and they were just having a LOT OF FUN styling on each other and picking completely random characters:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bca_koVxqWE

First M2K picked Mario (that he was never seen playing with before) and taunted each time he killed Ally, then he picked Bowser (Bowser!) and started styling all over him even more with taunts all over the place. You could even see on camera how much fun they both were having -- a stark contrast to usual "awkward face" M2K does when he wins a grand championship or something where he usually freezes when people touch or hug him to congratulate.

Also while i am on M2K vs Ally i highly recommend watching Brawl Grand Finale of Apex 2009. I got asthma fit by the end because of unbeliavable amounts of concentrated HYPE by the end. Such an exhilatating fight all the way to the climax finale: you could literally hear audience screaming their guts out and going completely bonkers there.

The main problem i expect is that Nintendo wants it to keep PG and invited people who can control themselves and won't cuss randomly or stuff like that. I gather that's why we also don't see Mango there, because he has Joker personality.

I'm curious if they are going to let the contest free play matches with each other before the tourney with all the characters or if they are going in cold without having played any of the new game.

Yes they will get to play the game and warm up before the tourney. I don't know how much time or even how many days they are given but it's been confirmed they get to practice before hand.

KeyBillyMay 30, 2014

I am impressed with the contestants that they were able to get.  This could be very fun to watch.
