Could be related to recent reported losses.

Nintendo Phuten, Nintendo's Taiwan subsidiary, will close on May 31.

Nintendo Phuten is mostly responsible for Nintendo hardware and game sales in Taiwan. Now, the business will transfer over to Nintendo Hong Kong.

The majority of Nintendo Phuten employees will be leaving late April, GNN reported. No specifics were stated as to why the closing has initiated.

Had no idea they even had a subsidiary in Taiwan, but sorry for those losing their jobs

Could be due to the fact that they are consolidating their business for China since China will be finally allowing console sales in around July and having a headquarter in Hong Kong makes much more sense.

Who is the man in the photo? I assume he has some to do with Nintendo Phuten. Looking at the GNN article, I assume it says who he is, but I can't read Chinese.

I think kkl97's thoughts make more sense. I can't imagine it cost that much to keep Phuten running, so it's probably closing due to the China news, or a distinct lack of success in Taiwan. A subsidiary based in China would still allow them to serve Taiwan well since they speak the same language (the dominant language anyway).

Does anyone have any clue about Nintendo's success in Taiwan? We hear more about South Korea nowadays, even though I believe Nintendo has officially been in Taiwan for years before they entered the Korean market.
