Play nice and don't cheat, in other words.

The upcoming Smash Bros. games will implement a system where multiple infractions will result in a temporary ban.

These include cheating, dropping out of a game early, targeting a single opponent and frequent self destruction.

Those who report baselessly will also result in a ban.

Targeting? As in going after a single player?

Shenanigans. If you notice someone sucks incredibly, that's kind of part of the game.

If they aren't too strict with this, it could be a good thing. But I'm certainly worried about if I have multiple dropped connections in a row through Internet hiccups that are no fault of my own, and return to find out I got banned for it...

Can they tell the difference between a lost connection and someone rage quitting by pushing the WiFi switch on the 3DS? When we play Mercenaries 3D, I get an error message when something goes wrong. Wii U has no such switch so unless a person is using the USB Ethernet dongle (all three of them out there), a rage quitter would have to unplug the router or modem. That might be too much work while angry. Of course, there's always good old fashioned start + quit which is easy to detect.

The targeting bans are utter bull. I have the right to single out any fool that plays as a space animal and ruin their match for having bad tastes.

Well, this throws a wrench into my plan to harass people into picking Pokemon that debuted after 2001.

This was an issue in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Strikers, get disconnected and they deduct points. The system try to work out whether you've been disconnected or you actively quit.

OK, most of those bans make sense, but...bans for going after a particular player? Really? That's called "playing a game competitively": you're going after either the weakest or strongest player first to whittle down the field.  :Q

I don't think the system can work it out. A terminated connection is a terminated connection. I have terrible connection and it dinged me a lot in Mario Kart. I had several races that I actually won, but I was disconnected within the 30 second for others to finish window and I would lose 250 points. Some days my internet would do great and I'd get 10-15 races in a row without a disconnect. Then others I might have 3 straight disconnects.

I'm okay getting a loss with a disconnect. I'd like better internet but living in the country limits my options. Its not Nintendos fault or the other players fault so I'm okay taking a loss. But that'd be terrible to be banned because my internet sucks.

I hope they decide to change their mind on targeting a player.......that's part of the fun, especially when someone does so to you only to find out they're no match for mama luigi. I know Nintendo likes to look out for newbs but this is a little too much.

I'm part of an exclusive club with my Wired Network WiiU using Cat6 to a Gigibit Switch.

I'm fairly sure, on the 3DS at least, that it knows you toggled the wifi off so it could make the comparison there.  Also if its really smart there are tell tales signs that you have a bad connection and didn't just simply unplug.

If they were going to check for wifi toggle, people would just power down or pull the lan cable on the router. And yes and no. Sometimes my internet would start to lag showing that I had a poor connection. Other times it would quit cols turkey much like someone pulling the lan line from the router.
