What is the famed studio working on next?

Retro Studios has begun work on their next project.

Speaking with gaming website GameSpot, Nintendo producer Kensuke Tanabe stated that the studio, developers of the recent Donkey Kong Country games, Mario Kart 7, and the Metroid Prime series, has begun work on their next project. While this project has been in development for the last few months, Tanabe would not comment further on the specifics of the game.

Shigeru Miyamoto speculated last year about the possibility of Retro Studios working on a Metroid or Zelda game, singling them out as a "high-priority" studio.

Its hard to be excited about Retro's Next project.  Fool me ones shame on you, Fools me twice shame on me.

KhushrenadaMarch 01, 2014

Cranky Kong Country!

Leo13March 01, 2014

What are you babbling "fool me once" for? DKCR and DKC:TF are awesome games.

Leo13March 01, 2014

What if it's Star Fox? I'd love a new star fox, but I didn't like Command

Nile Boogie ReturnsMarch 01, 2014

Side Scrolling Metroid on 3DS!!!

As toxic as Other M was, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is just going to let the Metroid property simmer down a bit before figuring out what to do with it.

It's too soon for another Mario title, even if 3D World was the lowest-selling flagship Mario game ever. That Zelda button-masher (oops, I mean, "Dynasty Warrior") game is a thing too now, so I don't think Retro's working on Zelda either

It's not more DK either, I think that's obvious.

It's not F-Zero, because nobody will buy a Wii U, much less a game that will undoubtedly sell badly on it. Also because Iwata's well and truly given up on the hardcores.

Custom Robo? HAHAHAHAHAAHAAA.

Starfox? Hmm, it's the most likely out of the bunch, I think.

As far as it being some dumb-ass party game crap, I don't think Nintendo's willing to waste one of their biggest assets on another throwaway annual Mario Party installment. Well, certainly not stupid enough to, anyway.

Wii Party U rocked. Get out!  :@

But seriously, Wii Party U is a really fun game, and makes one of the best uses out of the Wii U GamePad.

Finish the Return, Retro. For the good of the industry, and because I have an awful lot of popcorn to munch while this and other fora burn in rage.

Even if they are, those are not the games we were expecting out of Rare Retro Studios based on the amount of HYPE generated from hiring news.

I think those people who hyped themselves up over something as nebulous as hiring news should only be angry at themselves.

TheXenocideMarch 02, 2014

Dude, I'd be so happy if Retro made a Zelda.

broodwarsMarch 02, 2014

At this point, I don't care if it's a Metroid game or not. Whatever Retro's game is, please don't let it be another 2D DKC game that just about any other Nintendo studio could have made (and could have made in less than 3 years).

When they were announcing that they were brining in people from the Uncharted (& Crysis?) games, and there were talks of a new secret project, the last thing we were expecting was another Donkey Kong Country the side scrolling sequel, regardless of good it turned out to be.

ShyGuyMarch 02, 2014

Gritty Reboot of Urban Champion.

A big, expansive HD reimagining of The Legendary Starfy franchise.

Kytim89March 02, 2014

A reboot of the Metroid series in the style of last year's Tomb Raider and a 2D sequel for the 3DS. They could reuse assets from the DKCR/TF to make the 3DS Metroid Game and build the Wii U Metroid from scratch. The rebooted Metroid would tell the tale of a young Samus as she is stranded on a planet and has to rise up to be  bounty hunter.

They can definitely reuse DKCR's assets in a 2D Metroid. Just replace Kraid with Cranky Kong.

Plus its another platformer on a really platformer heavy platform.

Yeah... No.  While I liked the new Tomb Raider.  I also even said when I was reviewing it that it reminded of Other M at times.

Something new/original would be nice.

Retro Studios Pennant Chase Baseball 2k15.

AdrockMarch 02, 2014

I've only played the first three stages of Tropical Freeze, but I hope Retro Studios got all the Donkey Kong out of their system. Still, I won't pass up a good game just because it's not exactly to my specifications. I wouldn't mind seeing them take a shot at Mario or Zelda. Something completely original would be ideal though the expectations for such a game would be unfairly high even for the already unfair expectations routinely placed on them. When everything they do from a basic interview to hiring someone new results in hype-get, there's no way they can please some people.

Leo13March 02, 2014

Why not a 3D Donkey Kong? I never played Donkey Kong 64, but I heard it was really fun.

Clearly it is a Star Tropics reboot, set 20 years after Star Tropics 2 that is somewhere between Metroid Prime and Zelda in game design with some Uncharted presentation sprinkled in. Mike Jones, all grown up, is a researcher looking for evidence of alien life (who he fought, but no one believes him after all  this time). He gets abducted, brought to another planet, and must make an escape.

That's more inline with what we were expecting when the big reveal of the secret project turned out to be a Donkey Kong Country sequel.

You sure? This isn't Naughty Dog we're dealing with.

Bman87301March 03, 2014

*fingers crossed* Please let it be Starfox...

BlackNMild2k1March 03, 2014

I'm hoping Platinum gets duties on Starfox, Retro can assist, like they did on MK7. Platinum really wanted to make that game, so I say let them have it.

Retro needs an explorative 3D game though. like the StarTropics reboot/sequel that keeps getting brought up. Maybe another Metroid game, or something completely original. (Zelda maybe?)

StogiMarch 03, 2014

A pokemon platformer. Just because.

KhushrenadaMarch 03, 2014

Donkey Kong Country Trading Cards!

Mop it upMarch 03, 2014

Maybe it's a Scooby Doo game.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if it's another Donkey Kong game, they seem to come in threes.

It'll be Donkey Kong *and* Metroid in a huge crossover title.

Urban Champion 2

jarodeaMarch 05, 2014

Well, given how Iwata has been using Retro I would say they are working on Donkey Land Returns for the 3DS while the second team is laying the ground work for Donkey Kong Country Returns 3: Kranky Kongs Krazy Kapers in Kremling Kingdom on the Wii U (or Wii V ).

Ditto.  I won't ignore the announcement, but Retro has a ways to go re-earn my interest and hype enthusiasm.

Ian SaneMarch 06, 2014

I'm going to assume something to do with Donkey Kong until I get an announcement from Nintendo that says otherwise.  I will not get hyped up... yet will still find myself disappointed if it does turn out to be DK.  That's the problem with hype, you can't actually control it.  I want something cool so in the back of my mind is a little voice telling me "this could be something super cool!"  Yeah it probably won't be but it COULD be and that tiny possibility screws up any attempt to keep your expectations in check.  It's why every time I buy a lottery ticket I tell myself I have no chance of winning and yet still get pissed off when I lose.

SundoulosMarch 06, 2014

I'm more or less fine with the Donkey Kong games, and, in general, I'm glad they brought the series back.  I'm also ready for them to move on, but I can't help but feel like we'll get a third Kong game from them at some point.  I would hope that they would get to work on something entirely new, but that probably won't be the case.

My random prediction will be something from the F-Zero franchise.

It is sort of difficult to get excited about this announcement when you realize that it might take a least another year to hear something concrete about it.

There have been 2 Mario Party games in the last 8 yeas, it hasn't been an annual franchise since 2005. And the last Mario Party game (Mario Party 9 in 2012) got good reviews.
