Who knew that this golden oldie had such deft platforming skills? (SPOILERS INSIDE)

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will be released for Wii U on February 21, 2014, as announced during the recent VGX awards show.

In addition to a release date for the previously delayed 2D platformer, Nintendo and Retro Studios unveiled the title's fourth playable character to be Cranky Kong, the grandfather of the titular Donkey Kong who was previously teased via a leaked image of the game's box art.

Cranky Kong, who makes his series debut as a selectable character, has the unique ability of bouncing on his walking stick, which enables him to gain greater altitude than a regular jump and traverse otherwise dangerous hazards, such as spikes - not dissimilar to Scrooge McDuck's signature mechanic in Capcom's Ducktales franchise.

New gameplay footage showed certain collectibles that can only be obtained by utilising Cranky's capabilities. He joins a roster of previously-revealed Kong family members Donkey, Diddy and Dixie.

Talkback

I really don't understand why DK is the only playable character in single-player.  This is my number one complaint about Retro's take on the series and it's something that just doesn't make any sense.

alegoicoeDecember 07, 2013

i hope that's not the supposedly big announcement Reggie had planned for the VGAs :@

NeifirstDecember 07, 2013

I thought Reggie wearing the Samus Aran lapel pin while appearing with an employee of Retro Studios would have gotten a headline on NWR.  That's much more important than Cranky Kong!

AdrockDecember 07, 2013

I'm surprised they kept this a secret for so long. I was hoping Luigi or Samus Aran would be the fourth playable character.

ShyGuyDecember 07, 2013

A store spoiled the reveal a week ago by showing the cover art.

VahneDecember 07, 2013

Sadly, this IS the "big" announcement.

Bman87301December 07, 2013

Cranky Kong is the titular character's GRANDFATHER, not father.

KhushrenadaDecember 08, 2013

Nailed it! Number 6 on my list!
Oh sure. Some people might point to Easycure naming Cranky Kong as his only choice as getting it right but his was clearly a joke post and clearly didn't factor in all the possibilities the remaining character could be and their likely hood of appearing. Thus, I win.
I always win.

Only Nintendo could have thought this was a big announcement tonight, especially after it was already leaked a week ago.  I really wish that Cranky wasn't just a pogo-shaped jet pack on DK's back in Single-Player, as I'd rather play as just about anyone in the Kong family other than DK at this point.

OblivionDecember 08, 2013

I was really hoping for a Zelda announcement.

EnnerDecember 08, 2013

Well, expectations met.

Honest, the game looks fantastic; more of the great things I've seen in Donkey Kong Country Returns.

It's just... I didn't need to see this now and the publicity opportunity could have been used for something with more impact.

What? During the demo they said certain levels were designed around each character's strengths, like Cranky's Scrooge cane. I can't imagine they would only let you use Donkey Kong.

To be honest, I'm excited to use Cranky.

I like the choice, and it's certainly better than Funky Kong or something like that.

I haven't seen any official announcement that this has changed from DKCR, when only DK was playable in single-player.  If they have changed that aspect, then I would certainly be a lot more excited for this game.

Based on the footage they showed, it just means that you'll have a Cranky-shaped Pogo stick attached to DK's back in that level.
