Wii Sports Club Coming to Wii U, Features Online Multiplayer

Wii Sports finally goes online.

Wii Sports Club is hitting Wii U beginning November 7. The enhanced HD version of Wii Sports will be sold piecemeal, beginning with Bowling and Tennis. Each game will be sold for $9.99 each.

In addition to HD graphics, the sports will feature online multiplayer, which will take the form of Clubs. This allows players to register in state or regional clubs as well as chat during matches over Miiverse. Clubs will be ranked, and the system will allow clubs to compete with fellow members or face off against rival clubs.

The game itself will be a free download and comes with trial versions of each game. Players will be able to purchase a Day Pass for $1.99, which allows them to play any available games for 24 hours, or purchase the full version of each game for $9.99.

The first two games, Tennis and Bowling, will release on November 7. Baseball, Golf, and Boxing will release "in the months ahead."

Spak-SpangSeptember 18, 2013

The price is a little too high, but I like this idea.

Hopefully we will see Wiimote + enhancements in all older games, and hopefully boxing will require 2 wiimote + and not use the nunchuk at all.

OblivionSeptember 18, 2013

How is it too high? 10 bucks for HD, Motion Plus, and online play for the sports that you like? That's such a great idea. Instead of paying 50 bucks for all five (especially when I don't like all of them) I can pay 20 bucks for Tennis and Bowling/Boxing instead.

Nintendo has never been this good with digital anything, so this is a great surprise.

azekeSeptember 18, 2013

I will probably get this, but i'd prefer games from Resort, specifically archery and airplane battles. Not sure how if archery will be all that improved with online, but i'd be ALL OVER online dogfights over Wuhu island.

Spak-SpangSeptember 18, 2013

I would think $7.99 would be a better price.  But I will take $9.99.

I hope this means Nintendo will do more than just the original Wii Sports line up...I would like to see select Wii Play titles.  Tank, Laser Hockey, ect.  Also I hope the better Wii Sports Resort games get ported for HD as well.

What amazes me...is Nintendo usually does cool things, but does them too late to fully capitalize on them.  This should have been available at launch.  It would have been a killer downloadable App for fans...and would have gotten quite a few people to purchase a Wii U.

Spak-SpangSeptember 18, 2013

Actually Archery could be easily improved.  Allow people to run around on Wuhu island and then they have to stop and aim and shoot at opponents.  All the while taking wind and movement and everything into consideration.  Talk about amazing metagame multiplayer action.

That sounds more like World of Archercraft, i just want some regular ### wii sports stuff.

Leo13September 18, 2013

They could include Resort if you watched the Nintendo Direct the promised all the games from Wii Sports, but at first there will only be 2 available and they'll add the rest as they get them done. So maybe after they do all the wii sports games they'll do the resort games next. I hope so I played a ton of the sword fighting especially the 2-player duels.

Does anyone else find it odd that the nintendo direct did Wii fit u (a mii game) and Wii Sports Club (a mii game), but NOT Wii Party U (a mii game) even though Wii Party U comes out first?

xcwarriorSeptember 18, 2013

I think this is a great idea, though I want baseball more than any other game.

So they have no plans on adding anything more to the titles? I would love more than just vs for them. Like even a short 20 game season for baseball, or a road to the tittle in boxing, or just add the wii sports resort courses to golf, etc.

Price is kind of high, but at the same time, with ONLINE MULTIPLAYER, I'll easily get 10 hours of play out of these titles.

Great move by Nintendo!

AdrockSeptember 18, 2013

The price is high considering Nintendo gave all the games away for free for years. I understand there are improvements like online play and MotionPlus support, but are they $50 worth of improvements? Ehh, not so sure. If Club was coupled with the entirety of Resort for $50 or low enough individually to cost $50 if you pirchased all the games, maybe.

Also, I feel like this would have been really helpful at launch.

Leo13September 18, 2013

Some people are considering this Friday the "Real Launch" of Wii U. $299 for the Deluxe System which will include Nintendo Land OR Zelda Wind Waker with titles on the shelf including Mario U, Luigi U, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, Lego City Undercover, with Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Wii Party U Wii Fit U and more on the way.

ShyGuySeptember 18, 2013

First rule of Wii Sports Club is you don't talk about Wii Sports Club!

Ian SaneSeptember 18, 2013

This seems very F2Pish which is not a direction I want Nintendo, or frankly the entire videogame industry, to go down.

$50 for Wii Sports seems steep.  Would you have paid that for Wii Sports on the Wii if it wasn't a pack-in?  It seems like a $30 game at best.  Online multiplayer sounds great in theory but my friend broke tennis a few days after I got a Wii so that if he served first I could NEVER return it because my auto-running Mii couldn't get to the ball in time (and since you can't actually move your character I couldn't position him ahead of time either).  With the original version if one of your friends didn't discover that then didn't have to worry about it but if such an exploit is still in the online version of the game it will take like a day before it catches on and every "club" is infested with a glorified cheater that ruins the game.

I don't know if online Wii Sports with HD graphics (yeah there's some real eye candy in that game) is going to help the Wii U or not.  A new Wii Sports game could perhaps help but this is really a fad that's over.  You might as well port Guitar Hero 2 while you're at it.  Who out there isn't already bored of Wii Sports and feels that online play and improved graphics is worth buying a whole new console over?  If you're still interested in the original Wii Sports wouldn't you be content continuing to play it on the Wii?  I suppose it might sell to the converted, like someone buys a Wii U on the strength of a different game, but even then it's $50 for a port of a game that used to be FREE.  Seems too expensive for an impulse buy.

And let's not forget that NSMB Wii was a big hit and NSMB U failed to sell the Wii U so why would Wii Sports, which isn't even a new game, sell the Wii U?  I think the Wii U needs distinct gameplay experiences that are only possible on the Wii U to sell.  After all, that is EXACTLY what sold the Wii.  Wii Sports was a gameplay experience literally no other videogame system was capable of.  On the Wii it was one-of-a-kind and on the Wii U it's an inessential rehash.  Wii Sports the brand didn't sell Wii's but rather what it represented.

They should have made Wii U Sports that specifically used the Gamepad, you know the expensive controller that is the whole hook of the console in the first place that for some reason Nintendo has already forgotten about.  Though since this is just a remake of a game that was never too advanced to begin with and is being released in a episodic way I wonder if it's something Nintendo just banged out very recently in a panic to try to get more content on the Wii U.

SorenSeptember 18, 2013

So...NWR Wii Sports Bowling Club anyone?

Leo13September 18, 2013

Nice idea!!!
Or how about NWR Boxing tournament?

I was going to gripe about the $9.99 price point per sport, but upon reflection, I'm ok with it given that it allows me to avoid getting the sports I don't particularly care for (Baseball, Tennis).

Not saying I wouldn't prefer maybe a $5.99 price point, but I bet enough people will bite at $9.99 to justify the price from Nintendo's standpoint.

ejamerSeptember 18, 2013

I also feel like this is Nintendo scrambling to get more content onto Wii U... but don't see that (or the pricing experiment) as a bad thing.

They are taking a known property that is fun, adding online play - something that relatively few Wii U games offer - plus some other upgrades and then breaking the whole thing into small chunks so you can pick and choose how much you want to buy.

People who don't care don't lose anything. People who are excited have options and should be able to get a good return on their $10 (per sport) investment.  Would I have wanted to pay $50 for Wii Sports on Wii?  Not really... but when I consider how much play that game got it wouldn't have been such a bad deal.  In this case it sounds like people can try before buying and then drop as much or as little money as they want on the product.

Where is the downside to this announcement? Maybe concern that this effort could've been put into a different product... but I'd wager that the lessons learned here (online infrastructure, coding, and pricing decisions) will be used with other games in the future. Seems like a worthwhile experiment to me... even if I'm probably not going to buy any of the Wii Sports Club games.

In 2006, as the first game of its kind? Yeah, probably. In 2013, as an HD upgrade of a seven year old game I got for free with upgrades I'm barely interested in, fuck no.

Quote:

For the love of... Not every game is meant to be a system seller. And as far as I know, Club is a download only title therefore many people may not even know about this until they enter the eshop or when it shows up in the Plaza.

Not sure Nintendo will be in a panic for content when the first two games land on the eshop. They'll have plenty of decent games available by then. Maybe a few months ago when Wii U owners had next to nothing. In November, these just seems like something to buy.

Thank-you Adrock

Nintendo Land is a very fun game. I really don't understand why people don't like it. My family had a lot of fun with it and we still pull it out when people come over to visit.

MiyamotoSeptember 18, 2013

$9.99? For a digital copy? Of a 5th of a game? Of a Wii title? That's 7 years old? That was originally bundled for free?

Nintendo, you need to raise your game. You're not making it easy on yourself. Maybe it's time to look over the fence at what the other guys are doing. You could learn a thing or two about value for money and what consumers have come to expect... or you could continue to make bad decision after bad decision and slide in to obscurity. Whatevs.

RazorkidSeptember 18, 2013

People complaining about this sound like bitter, bitter old men. $10 each for one of the most fun multiplayer games of last gen with online functionality and Miiverse sounds great.

Try before you buy? Awesome!

Want to rent games at a rediculously low price for only when family and friends are over for things like holidays and parties?
We got you covered.

Think this whole thing is a scam/too expensive, but you still want to experience WiiSports? Pull out your old copy and play the game in Wii mode on your WiiU for free.

I see nothing but good options for all.

SorenSeptember 18, 2013

It all boils down to whether you think the online stuff(multiplayer, clubs, miiverse), hd, and motion plus upgrade is worth the 10 dollars for each game. For me it's only worth it for bowling, tennis and maybe golf.

Mop it upSeptember 18, 2013

I know this is just a desperation move, but I think it could be a good idea. What I'm not sure of is being digital-only, especially since Nintendo don't have the greatest track record of advertising anything digital. I feel like having a retail case on store shelves is the best way to reach the audience for this... but I could be wrong. We'll see how it works out.

For me, no interest in it.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorSeptember 18, 2013

Once all five titles are converted, I suspect we'll see a retail release.

And Nintendo is crazy if they don't make this a pack-in at some point.

I like the idea, I will be buying Tennis and Bowling when they come out. I agree though that Nintendo should probably have got them all done and also released a disk version. Although, if they are also planning another sequel to Wii Sports, it could dilute the impact of that new game.

I don't get the hate.  Nintendo likely spends minimal resources making a superior version of one of their THE best selling games of all time, adding in a major feature that everyone wanted.

Instead of "Meh, doesn't interest me" we get the "OH-EM-GEE NINTENDO DOESN'T GET IT WHY DO THEY HATE ME AND LIFE AND HAPPYNESS?!?"

Look, this might not be your cup of tea (I'm *interested*, but probably not a day-one purchase for me), but it's a good idea and will probably help move a few units with little investment.

I honestly think they're preparing bubdles with Wii Sports Clib pre-installed. And you kmow what, i even think with this push into digital they're doing lately they can easily make cheapo Wii U Lite without disc drive simply with this. All of their games and majority of third parties' games (however little) are on eShop anyway.

AdrockSeptember 18, 2013

I have no issues with this existing. In fact, I think it's a good idea to rerelease the games (though I always prefer physical copies and I believe one is coming eventually). My only issues are that they're late and they're expensive. At $10 per game, I'm simply going to respond like I always do with things beyond my price range: by not buying them. I wouldn't even pay $10 for Earthbound.

BlackNMild2k1September 18, 2013

They should make this and all future Wii Sports/Resort/Play/Motion/etc. conversion all an expansion of Nintendo Land. As in accessible within the Nintendoland park (And Nintendo Land should download to the internal mem while getting the same online upgrades. - a reimagining of the Animal Crossing UI we all imagined might happen years ago)

I'm also in the "this should have come out way sooner and much cheaper" camp, but I also want to take it a step further. If Nintendo plans on doing all the sports eventually, then they should have a limited time launch bundle where you pre-buy them all (all 5 Wii Sports titles) for the low price $34.99 and get them whenever they release. Otherwise you buy the titles a-la-carte @ $9.99ea.

AdrockSeptember 18, 2013

Like a Season Pass? That's not a bad idea. It's still a little more than what I'd like to pay for, but I definitely think it's fairer.

MannyponSeptember 19, 2013

I have been wishing for this ever since Wiisports was released.  I am a huge fan of WiiSports golf and I will be all over that when they eventually put that out.  Here's hoping for some more courses though, 9 holes is definitely not enough.

xcwarriorSeptember 19, 2013

Judging by WAY too many comments above, people do not want Nintendo to make online games.

NWR, let them know this. Online is apparently very bad. Local multiplayer only.

My gosh people, stop being a bunch of negative Nancies. If you don't them, don't buy em. I for one would love to play more games with those of you who want to play online. Wii Sports is perfect for that. I'll get $10 worth of gameplay out of these game. I'm buying all 5 - I do hope its like those 3DS streetpass things where maybe if we buy the first 4, we get the 5th free.

AVSeptember 19, 2013

I hope it adds more options to the gamepłay
Tennis allowing me to control movement of my mii would be a huge and ability to limit bowling matches to a few rounds. I hope they do have some kind of game pad features and options .

MagicCow64September 19, 2013

Boxing club gonna be a sad, lonely place.

I'm not into online games, at all, but I actually like this club framing, and could imagine myself participating in a bowling league, which for me is saying quite a lot.

I also normally hate F2P style content structuring, but it makes a lot of sense in this case. I would not want to drop money on golf, baseball, or boxing.

How the heck did you come to this conclusion? No one said, "Ew, no! No online please."

Personally, I may not play online games often, but I like that it's a thing and I think all multiplayer games should have it as an option. However, I'm not buying a game just for it. I think most people's issue is the price, not that Nintendo included online multiplayer. In fact, I don't think anyone is bemoan that. At all.

It sounds good but and this is pretty progressive from Nintendo but I was expecting this to be a retail title. Regardless I expect this to do pretty well. This is pretty much the model I wanted Nintendoland to follow.

Ian SaneSeptember 19, 2013

My only real issue with this is existing is that it is F2P which I do not want Nintendo to succeed with because it will then inspire them to use that model for other titles.  I think the whole concept is a rip-off and that it's success will ruin the videogame industry.  So it is in my best interest that this flops hard for Nintendo so as to discourage them from doing it again.

The dystopian future of videogames is microtransactions, paying to win, locked out used games, always-online checks, and outright removal of consumer ownership.  I want anything that would encourage these things to fail miserably.  This Wii Sports thing isn't even a particularly bad model of F2P (ie: you don't pay money to get better at tennis) but it is overpriced and I don't want Nintendo in the future selling Zelda for $100 by charging me per dungeon.  Better that they decide this piecemeal concept is not worth pursuing.

AdrockSeptember 19, 2013

Is this free to play? I thought the options were $2 for a 24-pass and $10 to buy. I don't really understand why the former even exists, but if someone only wants to play the game four times max forever before wasting money, more power to them.

azekeSeptember 19, 2013

I kinda like 2$ for one day option. It totally makes sense. If i only get to gather my family/friends just a few times a year it totally makes more sense just to pay 2 bucks to play ALL the games in Wii Sports Club rather than splurge full 50$ price only to play them once or twice.

It will make more sense when more games will be available i think.

Leo13September 19, 2013

For me the $2 option makes sense too. I've played console games online lifetime total 8 times. Max number using a single title 3. Therefore, as long as I don't play online way more with this game than I have any other game I can pay $2 when someone calls me up and says let's play wii bowling online and other than that if I want to play wii bowling with people at my house (this is much more likely for me) I'll turn on wii mode and pop in the old wii disc.

I also see the $10 option appealing to other people cause a lot of people play games on like daily I'm just not one of them and I wanted to show everyone that the $2 rental is appealing to some people like me.

Charging less than full price for an HD remastered game that has been reworked to include online play?  And you can get it cheaper if you only want one or two of the games?

The HALO anniversary edition was $40 and it was pretty much prettier graphics and some new maps.

Wind Waker HD is $50 and they're not really adding much to it.

Remastered movies are re-released on Blu-Ray in HD all the time on discs that cost $20 when you can get the DVD in the $5 dump bin at the Walmart.

People want stuff to be cheaper - I totally get it.  But I live in the real world where it wasn't that long ago, Nintendo was selling twenty year old NES games on the GBA for $20 each.

If the price of the game upsets you so much, don't buy it.  There's plenty of 99 cent games on your cell phone you can get.

BlackNMild2k1September 19, 2013

We aren't buying it and that's what we are saying, it cost a little much for what it is. Each individual sport is not full fledged and is little more that a fun demo for the wiimote.
Upping the graphics and adding the sorely missed online is not worth the premium price they are charging for a game they practically gave away for free for years.

If they are going to charge like that for individual "demos"/sports, then they should definitely do a season pass where you can just but them all at once at a discounted price.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorSeptember 19, 2013

Keep in mind, it was only "given away" in the US - it was a full-fledged retail title that sold billions in Japan.

Also, this idea that they gave it away...  it's almost the complete opposite of the idea that folks paid $200+ for a machine that they bought only to play Wii Sports..

And it's *fine* that you're not buying it.  I'm not sure I will either.  Tennis is somewhat likely, but the rest... meh.  But all this gnashing of teeth over it is just confounding to me. Aside from all of that, if they're just little tech demos, why the heck do you care about them anyway?  You played them seven years ago on the Wii - why get your underwear in a wad over them now?

BlackNMild2k1September 19, 2013

I'm not sure who you are referring to, but I could give 2-f***s about this game to be honest, and my underwear is most certainly not in a wad over it. :P

Just thought I would drop my 2-cents, as this game falls right in with my thinking on the whole VC being overpriced.

I haven't fired up my Wii U in months outside of the occasional Netflix or Plex Media server streaming to the TV downstairs (see my title), and with Nintendo's current output, I see no reason that will change in the near future.
I loved Wii Sports for months when it first came out 7 years ago, and I would love to play it again online with some fellow forumers, but $10 for each "game" is a little much when the games are not really whole. Maybe if they added modes, like tournament mode and career mode, (and I apologize if that's what they are doing, but I don't remember reading that) or combined all of Wii Sports/Play into Resort and released it as the ultimate HD collection (w/ all above mentioned upgrades), then a full $50/$60 would be warranted.

But as it stands, it yet another old game that is priced right out of interest for a system that has been failing to capture my (and apparently many others) attention for quite sometime now.

Nintendo should and could try harder.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorSeptember 19, 2013

I don't think they mentioned a career mode, but they're pushing all kinds of vs. stuff, so, I suspect we'll see plenty of tournament features.

It's typically cynical of Nintendo to look at it as, what's the most some people will pay, rather than the approach of their competitors (on console and PC), which is more in line with, let's give our customer's great value and they will be more inclined to return and buy more from us, not to mention that is also builds up good will and an over-all impression of good value.
One of these models is hugely successful and generates billions of dollars in profit per yer, and one of them doesn't. I'll leave you to guess which one is which.

Is that what you think they did when they included a free wii remote with Wii Party U? Essentially charging  $10 for the game?

Satoru Iwata is beginning to remind me of Max Bialystock from The Producers.

He's making love to old ladies? Guess that explains why Nintendo was promoting senior citizens playing the Wii.

I hope Daan comments on this. There seems to be something going on with his returns especially in that first match, like excessive lag or something to do with WiiMotion+ controls that maybe Daan wasn't used to yet.
