Cue the classic Final Fantasy victory jingle.

A follow-up to 2012's RPG music title Theatrhythm Final Fantasy has been unveiled in the latest issue of Japanese weekly magazine Shonen Jump.

This sequel, subtitled Curtain Call, will contain more than 200 playable songs, including a selection from the newest mainline games, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIV. In addition, there will also be a new multiplayer Challenge mode and over 60 characters to build your in-game party from.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy - Curtain Call will launch on Nintendo 3DS in Japan next spring.

If Square-Enix wants this to be the definitive version of Theatrhythm, they'll cut out any songs from Final Fantasies 2 and 3.

Otherwise, I liked the 1st Theatrhythm, even if its track selection was somewhat lacking. I'll keep an eye on this one.

I wish it was a sequel to Rhythm Thief. I fear it got overshadowed by Theatrhythm which is a shame as I prefer it far more.

The Problem with Rhythm Thief is that it never truly found its groove and was trying to do a bit too much.

I played both demos at the same time and based on the demos I chose to buy Theatrhythm. With Rhythm Thief was the game better than the demo? With Theatrhythm I'd say the demo gave me a really good sense of what the game was.

If you like Layton and you like Rhythm games then Rhythm Thief may be worth checking out for you.

I would actually preferred the same game with all DLCs on the cart rather than a completely new game. Because i'd be all over that. While brand new game with it's own set of DLCs is just an additional turnoff.

If we're comparing Theatrhythm and Rhythm Thief, i think i enjoyed Theatrhythm's demo more than a full game for Rhythm Thief.

I don't think this is a sequel but rather an expanded version. Besides the subtitle making it sound as such, with numbers like 200 tunes and 60 characters then there's no way it doesn't contain the content from the original Theatrhythm. I expect this to contain all of the tracks, DLC, and characters from it.

It's probably too much to hope for Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, though...

KhushrenadaSeptember 10, 2013

Well, you're all wrong! Out of the games I've fully played for 3DS, Rhythm Thief is my current top game for the system. I admit it has faults but there's so much I enjoy about it, I'm able to gloss over them. I mean, you have a gun shootout set to music! Genius. Maybe it has to do with nostalgia. I've never played a FF game so none of the music means anything to mean. The gameplay is what is left to sell it and I didn't find the demo that compelling compared to Rhythm Thief and I liked the music on the Rhythm Thief demo more. It didn't disappoint.

If it helps any, I think Rhythm Thief does seem like the better game just from its demo. I haven't bought the game though, but I plan to eventually.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is my favorite rhythm game ever, so this news makes me happy. Here's hoping a localization comes and comes relatively soon.

CericSeptember 10, 2013

Rhythm Thief is just too unforgiving.  You either have it or you don't.  It rarely allows for that middle ground you need for a Rhythm game.

I think Benjamin is in the scan, so this might actually happen.

I'm just hoping for a lot of Type-0 stuff to build hype for the 3DS port/localization... what? If Mystic Quest can get referenced, anything can happen.

The original rocked my socks off, and Final Fantasy XIV (and what has been released of Lightning Returns) has some phenomenal music.  Even if this game is an expanded re-release of the original, I will easily sink dozens more hours into it.  This could be very promising!

So am i. But judging from my impressions from full Rhythm Thief game and demo of Theatrhythm, Square's game striked me as the more polished one. Unique art style, these non-sensical randomly generated text bubbles characters say - it's all very charming package. And even if i never played FF game, and don't know the story context for every track, i can still appreciate their quality.

Do it! For me, the game that could me hooked was on the demo when you sneak through the Louvre hiding behind statues. I loved the music and design. The other games were interesting enough for me to take the plunge. In the end, there are 50 rhythm games but most of the concepts are done twice and in some cases 3 times. So, there's only around 20 different types and you might like some more than others but I found it a blast.

I want a sequel and this is definitely something I think could be made into an awesome franchise. Personally, I think they should have Phantom R visit different locations around the world for each sequel. So, a game set in London, a game set Moscow, a game in Rio De Janiro. And then you go and explore the city and all it's famous landmarks in the story as well as having a chance to infuse a bit of the local music into the game and rhythm games.

The only issue with that is the first game establishes most of the characters as being Paris citizens and I think it would be hard to move them to different locals. At least Vergier and Charlie. Marie could be moveable in that she could be touring to perform if you really need her but Phantom R could be a James Bond type and meet a new girl every adventure as well. Otherwise, I think it could be sort of stale to always be set in Paris.

Perhaps. I do think there is a shift in the degree of difficulty around the Chapter 7 point. Although even that can still vary. In the final fight with Napoleon, I A ranked that game first try but my first fight with him I only got a D and it took me a few tries to get to A rank. Why I was in the groove for that one and not the other, I can't say. Near the end, I got a lot of E or D ranks to scrape by and continue the story. The only one I struggled mightly with was Rhythm Game 30 when you hang glide. I couldn't understand it and it was the biggest roadblock to my continuing the game. I finally squeaked through it with an E rank and could keep going. When I went back to get A ranks on everything, it was the second last game I did. But playing it over and over I finally clued in to how it worked and when I had that moment of clarity, I finally appreciated it and it removed a lot of the negativity I had around it. I do wish the game sometimes explained things a bit more because it took me so long to grasp that concept and it only appears the one time.

Another thing that helped was the items you can buy before beginning any Rhythm game. The item to replensh my groove bar if I reach 0 helped me get through a few tough challenges in the end to keep moving. Then when I was working on getting the A ranks, the item to stay in the groove helped me so that I wasn't as heavily penalized by a mistake thereby helping keep me in the running for an A rank at the end. That said, it is true you have to be pretty much perfect at the end of any Rhythm game as you won't have time to rebuild your groove energy if you make a mistake then. But at least it helps you through the first two parts and a bit of the start of the third.

Theatrhythm is the only Final Fantasy game I've ever played; I loved it and now I want to play a real final fantasy game (Which I will as I just bought Final Fantasy XII for the DS)

Sorry to say, but FFXII on DS isn't a "real" Final Fantasy game, in the sense that it isn't one of the mainline ones.

Leo13September 11, 2013

That stinks. I was torn between 2 DS games Final Fantasy III and XII and I picked XII because metacritic had a higher score I don't know anything about final fantasy games that's why I wanted to try one out.

KhushrenadaSeptember 11, 2013

Way to destroy the dream, Mop it up!

The DS also has Final Fantasy IV, which would be a better place to start than those two games. If you have a DS that can play GBA games, then you could get Final Fantasy I and II: Dawn of Souls on GBA, and start with the original game in the series (or a nicely-done remake of it, in this case). The GBA also has FFIV, V, and VI. If you have a Wii then you can download the exact original Final Fantasy on the NES, and can also get the original SNES versions of IV and VI (which are labeled as II and III respectively as they were the second and third games to release in North America).

I haven't actually played FFXII on DS though so I don't know much about it, but from what I understand it's a side-story of FFXII with different gameplay.

Leo13September 11, 2013

Thanks for the info. I have a 3DS and a Wii U. Maybe I'll snag a VC final fantasy game when they come on the Wii U.
(yes I realize I can get them through the wii channel, but it will be so much more convenient when I can do off tv play it's actually the reason I picked XII on 3DS over XII over PS3 as my tv is always occupied by my wife and kids)
