The second crowdfunding attempt has ended with a thud.

Shadow of the Eternals has failed to reach its funding goal on Kickstarter.

Planned to be the spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, the Shadow of the Eternals Kickstarter campaign only managed to make $323,950 in pledges, far short of its $750,000 goal.

This was the second attempt by Precursor Games to fund the game through Kickstarter, after the first was cancelled.

The game was originally scheduled to be published for the Wii U, along with the PC and PS4.

You listen to me, you go to the top.

You don't listen to me, you're never heard from again.

Nintendo should pick this game considering they need all the Wii U games that they can get at this point.

Yes, because if there's one thing Nintendo needs, it's more games no one cares about.

Well if Nintendo picked it up then they could actually call it Eternal Darkness, and that brand has a pretty decent cult appeal. It wouldn't be the AAA game that would sell everyone a Wii U, but it would certainly help. I really doubt it'll happen, though.

Eternal Darkness is something that would have been a good surprise near the end of the system.

Considering Dyack was found guilty of copyright infringement, misappropriation of trade secrets, and breach of contract, I doubt Nintendo will ever want to work with him ever again.

This is the same reason why Precursor Games can't reach their Kickstarter goals because nobody trust Denis Dyack anymore after all the shit he's pulled.

I don't see how a spiritual successor to what amounts to a forgotten game that maintains a cult follow mostly because it was released on the wrong system and was doomed to fall short of sales projections is going to do much for the Wii U. The same people who did not run out and buy a Gamecube to not play the first game are not going to go out and buy a Wii U to not play this same game. It's just like people expecting Pikmin to suddenly matter. It was a fine game in it's time but it was not a system seller than and it wasn't going to be now.

This game wouldn't even sell to the core crowd who owns a Wii U because most of those gamers, the ones who had the Gamecube and bought ET, haven't gotten a Wii U yet and this isn't the game to push anyone over the fence. It might help but on it's own nope. And after the failure of the first why in earth would Nintendo ever want to fund a sequel spiritual or otherwise?

I guess you can't edit posts in this forum. I made some typos that should have been Eternal Darkness I pressed backspace and it deleted most of the word. Stupid autocorrect.

So...Nintendo did renew the Eternal Darkness trademark recently.  Is it safe to assume they did that just to retain the rights to the name, or does anyone think it's even remotely possible they'll release the original as an eshop release?  I have 0 confidence that there'll be any new game in the series.

toddraAugust 25, 2013

Nah, knowing Nintendo it was nothing more than protecting their IP to prevent anyone else making money off it. A new game would be pretty cool but the reality is I doubt Nintendo wants to have anything to do with it. Maybe with Iwata coming to NOA things might change though so who knows I guess anything is possible.

you can't edit posts in certain threads because someone decided to abuse that power...

You can edit posts, just not in TalkBack. There was some unpleasantness that led to that ability being taken away.

Was anyone expecting that? Most games target a specific audience and that's exactly what Shadow of the Eternals, like Eternal Darkness before it, strived to do. It may not have lit up sales charts, but it still could have been a decent game. Right now, there's really nothing on Wii U in the genre. I agree with insano. It might be worth Nintendo picking the game up and rebranding it Shadow of Eternal Darkness or Eternal Darkness: Shadow of the Ancients. I don't think they will, but I think it might be worth it.

Even if it didn't sell that many Wii Us it'd buy them some goodwill from their base and from the gaming press, which they could really use right now.

rlse9August 25, 2013

That's too bad, I was hoping that maybe by some miracle this would be a great "sequel" to Eternal Darkness.  That game was among my favorites on the Gamecube and just seems like a game that could have developed into a really good series.  It's a shame that never happened.

I was never in a million years going to contribute to their Kickstarter entirely because of Dyack's reputation.  It just seemed like it would be a scam.  I'm still interested in some follow up to Eternal Darkness.  If Nintendo wants to make one, I'm interested.  I just assumed investing in Dyack's project was just handing him money to run off with.

fiendcodeAugust 26, 2013

Between Epic, NeoGAF and Too Human, Dyack really dug his own grave.  I can't help but feel a little sorry for him though, he really is a toxic figure within the industry at this point and it's hard to see a way out of that for him.  I feel like Precursor would've had a better shot at funding if he wasn't involved at all.

I'm pretty sure I'm responsible.

...but what are they saying?  Is it distrust of the people making the game? Disinterest in the franchise/idea it's based on? Unwillingness to support a Wii U-based project (which seems pretty reasonable given the size of the install base)?

To some extent, likely all of the above. No one trusts Dennis Dyack to deliver a game anymore; anything related to Eternal Darkness hasn't been relevant since the early 2000s; no one's buying a Wii U right now; and the Kickstarter's costs & goals seemed extremely unrealistic.

Except that the alarm actually counts as victory music which is kind of strange but I always liked it when the contestant was running around celebrating and you'd get the whoop whoop in the background. Ah, Price is Right. You're the best.
